I was 17 years old when I saw the original Grand Funk Railroad at Shea Stadium in the early 1970s. I can tell by the expression on your face that you get it, Grand Funk Railroad was fun to listen to and fun to watch. You could not help but have a good time at their concerts. They gave their fans what they wanted.... great music, great musicianship, and loud volume. I have their live double album and when I want to reminisce and go back in time to when I was 17 I put the record on the turntable and crank up the volume until I rattle the windows and rearrange all of the stuff in the china cabinet.

I had two favorite bands; one American and one British. Grand Funk Railroad and Led Zeppelin. Brewer was energetic for sure, but Bonham would (and did) go for 20 or 30 minutes on his concert solos. Moon was simply a wild man with sticks. Ahh, the heyday of rock and roll!! If only we could turn back time and see it all again live on stage!

Joe Thompson I graduated HS in ‘77. I WORE OUT my live “Caught In The Act” 8-track all 3 years of high school. It was a 10 mile drive (one way) to high school in my B5 Blue ‘71 Plymouth Barracuda (10th grade), then my yellow/black ‘74 Plymouth ‘Cuda 360-4 (11th/12th grades) and most mornings it was GFRR blasting thru my car’s speakers as my brother and I rocked out to Mark, Don, & Mel on the way in! Truly a shame the way Don & Mel turned on brother Mark. All three were so talented in their own ways and all were integral to the band’s CLASSIC ‘70s sound. But weighing it all out, it was Farner’s talent for songwriting/composing, his masterful guitarwork and signature guitar sound, that WONDERFUL rings-clear-and-clean-as-a-bell signature Mark Farner vocals, and his can’t-stand-still perfect groovin’-and-movin’-to-the-music-they-were-makin’ as he macho-strutted-and-pranced all over the stage that carried most of the weight and took Grand Funk to the heights of blowing Zeppelin out of Zeppelin’s headline spot and outselling the Beatles at Shea! Mark Farner was indeed the Funk in The Railroad! And WHAT A RIDE IT WAS!!!!
@iDONTdoFacebook
@iDONTdoFacebook 5 лет назад
Besides Grand Funk, the other mainstays I listened to at times on those 10-mile morning drives in to high school in ‘75, ‘76, and ‘77 were Paul Rodgers and his BAD COMPANY... THE EAGLES... and of course PINK FLOYD (“Dark Side Of The Moon” & “Wish You Were Here” albums). Beyond those 4 anchor bands (which I still listen to), I would also sometimes enjoy some Nazareth, Head East, Aerosmith, Boston, Foreigner, and ZZ Top. But then one day I found, ten years had got behind me. ...Then FORTY-FOUR... One day I was sixteen years old. I blinked... SIXTY. BAM! Just like that.

This was a real influence for me on the drums,when I got my first kit.ps I could tell Don brewer I had the 8 track tape and to let him know how great the drums sounded, had the sound of a train on this solo. The snare and Tom's and cymbals was chemistry.how bad ass it sounded on the 8 track, that was the real solo.the best.!!!!.

Mark is not with the band to these days cause the other two screwed him out of GFR co-ownership. The last time the originals played together was around 1998-1999...I was lucky enough to see that show, and they were nothing short of amazing. Mel and Don still together, but its not GFR without Mark, an amazing singer,writer and frontman. If you have a chance go see him live. Tours as Nark Farner or Mark Farner Band.

TNUC was on GFR First LP On TIme. On GFR LIVE!, It was the 2nd to last track on this Double set LP. The LP disc 1 was Side 1 and Side 4 and disc 2 was Side 2 and Side 3. This was done to enable us to flip the records over is the short time for continues play time. I would blast LIVE as high as I could without blowing my speaker apart and not damage the house. Caught in the Act was only done to complete GFR contract, but LIVE was far better tracks.

Mark Farnum, (lead singer/Guitar and front man) is so talanted. His story is amazing! He almost died three or four times from drugs overdoses, and was saved by Jesus Christ, and has written his Biography. Such a great Band that never got the credit they deserved. Listen to these 2 songs. "Closer to Home, and I'm your captain." I forget which album, but the 2 songs sort of blend into one another. After you listen to these two songs, you'll get it. Closer to Home is so mellow, yet powerful, and almost brings you to tears. Find these 2 songs, and listen.
