We spent a day on this beautiful island as part of our Honeymoon trip in August of 1969. We'll spend a few days on the island this August, to celebrate our 50th Anniversary. We enjoyed your video very much. Looking forward to this trip!

We did spend a few days on Mackinac Island August 2019. It was the PERFECT place to celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary. The carriage rides, the wonderful restaurants, the beautiful gardens. Enchanting!

My ancestor, Charles Caskey, was the builder of this place. All the work was reportedly done without electricity or power tools in about 90 days.

@@jacqueg5050 No that part about it being built in 90 days is true. If you go there, the tour guides specifically mention that they were on a strict 90 day schedule.

This is so super cool! At 1 minute 43 seconds or so I heard my voice! Then on the right I see a woman in a purple shirt with a man and a woman. It was ME in my purple T-shirt with my book cover for "My Heart Belongs on Mackinac Island" on the front -- but this video is from back and side. We're on the right looking at the pictures on the wall and talking. Thanks for posting this! You made my day!

What a great story and what a brilliant video that makes me yearn to visit as soon as the restrictions of the lockdown are relaxed. I am writing this from the UK so the next best thing to actually being there is to view the beautiful footage on You Tube.

I think about this conundrum, as a child while playing with his ball, Arthur first met Richard, but then as an adult when he was the manager of the hotel, he saw Richard again. I wonder if he would have any memories of him, or if he would suspect that something strange was going on in terms of time travel.

I was there in the early sixties. Doesn’t appear that much of it is original. Lots of modern additions and a mixture of decorating styles. The best part is the porch and the view.

When I was young, I drove up there as often as I could to stay at the Grand. Only once did I stay at a different hotel on the island and I regretted it. Always always the grand. Wish I could go back.

Beautiful! It was a perfect place to film the movie Somewhere In Time. I really hope that the pocket watch that was used in the filming of that movie is on display somewhere in this hotel!

It's not, actually. But they do have a 'Somewhere in Time' display on the lobby level of the hotel. And they display the brown bowler hat that Richard Collier (Christopher Reeve) wore in the movie. :)

Finally saw this wonderful landmark hotel recently. Saw the majority, if not all, of that place. Lovely and majestic, and the sight of two movies made there, Somewhere in Time (1980) and This Time for Keeps (1947). Thanks a million for uploading such an educational tour of one of the best landmarks in the U.S. Must return to the upper peninsula of Michigan soon.

The Grand Hotel one of the most nicest buildings in the world. I've been in there once n I almost got lost lol but thanks to your vid I know how to get to the main lobby from down stairs. Thank you for the video have a great day. I'll be going back to Mackinaw Island again soon.

That's the Stanley hotel in Estes Park, Colorado.... I'm actually from there. A beautiful hotel as well. It was built partially from timber from a forest fire. On hot days if you go up into the attic, you can still smell the scent of smoke.

@@tonydebolt8175 Sounds interesting. They must have done some kind of camera tricks when filming The Shining there, because everyone says the corridors were made to look impossibly long, and the floor plan of the kitchen was distorted.

The Stanley served as the exterior shots. Stephen King and his wife were staying at the Stanley when he got the inspiration for the movie.....

I know this is a walking tour but it could have showed a lot lot more by going around more and then editing it down afterwards. No carriages pulling in to drop off guests? No going to other areas and other floors except for the general main area up front?

Beautiful hotel but in desperate need of redecorating. Not fitting to the style. Almost garish in decor. Has it always been decorated like that. Not trying to be critical but I was not expecting the interior to look like that. It takes away from the charm and elegance. Still long to go there one day. The views are so beautiful.

....just paid a ten dollar self guided walking tour and was able to get everywhere. Very beautiful place. The porch is 660 feet long.

I hate to say it but the inside of this place is super ugly. I cannot watch anymore of this. I expected the inside to be absolutely beautiful with beautiful Victorian furniture. It's so sad that it looks so bad. The interior designer had horrible taste.

My wife & I priced hotels on the Island in the early 90s. The Lilac Tree was roughly half the price of the Grand & from what I've researched was much nicer. I think staying at the Grand is for the ambience & those who don't see $$ as an issue. It's nice, don't get me wrong.
