Serving on a grand jury is uniquely empowering experience and an extraordinary opportunity for citizens to have their voice heard. This orientation video, produced for the NYS Unified Court System, explains the history and process.
yeah its great until you find out they make you do it 2 days a week for 3 months and your work doesnt legally have to pay you for time out of office. Grand jury duty for me equals POOR
i did it back in 2014. lasted almost 12 weeks, and we were needed at least 3x/week. the worst is when they wanted you to hear a case at say 9am, and then again in the afternoon. if you left the downtown area, parking was nearly impossible later in the day. so basically you stayed at the courthouse doing nothing all day between cases. state paid us $40/day for food & parking, and many were not being paid by their employers if they're hourly. considering the ADA's get the verdict they want every time, this entire process is a formality and achieves nothing. total & complete waste of time for all involved. plenty of other states have done away with this process, NY should as well.
You can claim hardship when you go to the first day of jury duty and the majority of people get dismissed if you make the case it’s not financially possible for you to miss out on work and/or your employer is not willing to pay.
the exception is if you're self employed like a software engineer, private contractor, or someone that sells on ebay. Nobody will compensate for time wasted. Customers will only pay for work completed.
Then that makes you no better than the rest of the scum in the justice system. I challenge you to report back here and let us know anytime you vote to NOT indict a case. Ask yourself why grand jury's indict 99% of all cases because one day it could be "the people vs. YOU".
Our local grad jury was a joke with the bureau and attorneys talking to the jurors like they were stupid. Screw them. Civic duty my arse. They don’t give a shit our opinion.
I had to go to grand jury duty. First thing I don’t feel comfortable making this decision. Since I don’t know much about the law. It would be unfair for me to make this decision. I believe we should have a choice to decide whether we want to serve or not.
" A Grand Jury will indict a ham sandwich ". How often do they not deliver to a prosecutor everything that's pushed for? Is the Grand Jury testimony recorded and offered available to the accused & charged person researching their defence including how they might wish to plead? At least this is a check on prosecutorial discretion.
I’m too dumb for this. Why am I selected to be summoned for grand jury. Are they gonna make me write. My hand writing is terrible. Is the judge gonna point fingers and make the jury talk. I stutter on my own words.
To all Jury duty PEOPLE,,stop helping these higher level put our younger adults in the system,,,STOP judging by there evictions,,all they want is for us to pay the system,,STOP,,,,or else whenever it's your turn to be judged,,they will not have pity on your ASS.
People put themselves in the system. Take accountability for your actions. Each case is different but if someone is guilty they should be charged as such. Don't want to do the time dont do the crime snowflake.
@@Gmod_gaming actually I've been the prison system i just choose to take accountability for my actt, also been to war. Not video games like yourself in your moms basement loser.
The guy in the first picture front row, is showing the Freemasons symbol.. what an absolute joke. No one holds they're hands that way unless they're in the masons 😅
Grand jury system doesn't work for several reasons: 1) Grand juries are tools of prosecutors. There is no defense. Jurors hear so many cases they cannot think straight. 2) The overwhelming majority of grand jury decisions are indictments, unless a cop is involved, then the results flip. 3) Only 2 countries in the world still use the grand jury system. The USA is one, and only 23 states still use it. The only other country that still uses this outdated, lopsided and inefficient system is Liberia, one of the poorest in the world and with an average IQ of 67.
Please explain how grand juries are "tools of prosecutors." If the grand jury says "don't indict" the case won't go to trial. Are you advocating that every case/allegation go to trial?
@@hedonisticzen shut up they have a position of authority and abuse it. It’s wasn’t just me either the entire group of jurors was intimidated and it’s a matter of the justice system running fairly or not. Do not talk to me again
research Jury Nullification. you do NOT know what it is, nor have you heard of it, nor do you even have a hint what it is called. (unless you want out of jury duty and want to get an entire panel dismissed) use it wisely, you obviously cant do as badly as judges and prosecutors.
REALLY PROTECT AND UPHOLD Hun? Not where I am living they indicted me on felony charges over lies they had no evidence except a lier ex and still indicted me when their victim is the abuser and the witness had harassed stalked and taunted me over u better see me and talk to me I'm going to grand jury soon and im wondering what story I'm going to tell yep totally unjust
The State and local prosecutors fail their citizens whenever a policeman kills another unarmed black man by choosing to not bring sufficient evidence for an indictment-which is super easy to get (more likely to do it than not).
Not as bad as a man with no prior arrest history and in good standing with the community who gets accused of child indecency by his own f*n daughter 23 years later without telling her twin brother a single thing this entire f*n time. Oh, and the accused has cancer, three neck surgeries, and doesn’t work with kids any more. Zero witnesses to these accusations. Try again.
The State and local prosecutors fail their citizens whenever a black person kills another black person by choosing to not deal with the growing crime rate caused by liberal policies. This is much more of a problem than police shooting unarmed black men.
