I played this game a few years ago, it was one of my favorites. Every once in a while, I check if they ever made a sequel, but none so far. This game have great online potential as there are many strategies, skills and formations the characters can perform. There is also classes, items, weapons, armors with different stats and other abilities. This gameplay style is befitting of an online competitive game, where players can duel each other teams for ingame rewards and ranks. I think the dev's at Vanillaware already wanted pursue this idea with the war zone mode, but somehow they didn't press on with their endeavor. Perhaps their game didn't get enough attention, but that could easily be attributed due to the lack of localization and advertisement.

What would be an amazing surprise is if they took the patched version, polished it up, and included it as a bonus with Unicorn Overlord. Unlikely, but it would be awesome.

Freaking love the artstyle of the game. Wish more games would include this turn based and strategy gameplay. Sadly everything is mostly real time hack n slash. Even Final fantasy went full real time. Anyhow, good review buddy^^

I agree - I love these types of games as well. I REALLY want to do princess Crown but getting an English patched version of that for the psp is practically impossible. Its taken me about 3 years to get this and valkirya chronicles 3 in English

@@robospacekitty2007 yup too bad they didn't release a global version for these games. Valkyria chronicles is one of the best game on the psp. I am so happy there is now a similar game on google play, it is epic seven.

I just googled it and saw a youtube video of it.....how the hell do I play this and why isn't there an English edition? am I able to play this on the PC via steam or something? ive got to play this Epic Seven it just looks SOOOOOO good

@@robospacekitty2007 It's a mobile game only, you can find it on google play for free. At least it is available for the EU google play store. Maybe you can download Qooapp and find it on there if you can't find it.

I just found out its ANDROID only....I have a windows 10 phone (Lumia 640XL) so I cant even play that on my phone as its ISO only. Really wish I could play this on the PC as I wana do a review of this now......sigh......its like when I couldn't play Neptunia and friends all over again

I just started playing this, but when I enter in any name for myself or characters, the finished name has spaces between the letters. How do I avoid that?

So that's why Unicorn Overlord was so good i am buying and collecting every Vanillaware game after playing 13 Sentinels that became one of my favorites games of all time and Unicorn Overlord for me one of the best game in this year and in the switch system guys please support this amazing company there is not more studios like this 🙏🏽

Thanks for the in-depth review. Vanillaware is my favorite developer and I’ve always wondered about this game and Princess Crown. It’s a shame they haven’t rereleased this one, maybe with some gameplay adjustments like they did with Odin Sphere. Perhaps after Aegis Rim. Thanks again.

They did release it but just for Japan only. It's just hard as hell to find a patched English version anywhere. It's taken me about 2-3 years to get this copy and valkiyra chronicles 3 in English. They both run on the PSP emulator perfectly. I highly recommend you try them

while it would be an amazing feet if it could be done u have to remember that the English in the game your seeing here is done via a fan translation. The publisher/Developers are never gona pay the translators for there time and effort and i sadly doubt they would take there own time/effort to do a decent port themselves. I think this is sadly one of those games which will forever be lost in time and just left to rot

you can play it on your switch but only if your switch is hacked.

@@KevenLC It also depends on how much your willing to put into a Switch system itself. The switch is piss poorly designed and basically uses Mobile Phone technology which is why its got serious overheating problems and why u see so many faulty ones on ebay. It depends on how much your willing to install/mod on a system which is essentially a ticking time bomb for when it will stop working. Its pretty ironic really as my friend whos an Indie Developer got a DevKit from Nintendo recently to port his game to the switch and the Devkit comes with a large heatsink and a decent made fan....something which really i think should have come as standard considering your paying 200+ for that console

@@robospacekitty2007 yeah some of those games are probably too demanding for the switch... I mean you can play new Doom, new Wolfenstein, Witcher 3 and Crysis on it

@@KevenLC Im on about the hardware of the system itself. if something isnt built of decent enough parts then its bound to break a lot sooner than later. Just look at how badly designed the PS3 was (the original that was like a mini oven) or how the xbox360 never improved and if anything got worse over time. The Wii was actually very well built, the Wii u wasnt too badly built either. The switch however clearly wasnt designed with cooling or the machines life span as its main priority.

Yeah don't touch that. The patch itself should be a bunch of files, not an application.

I could give a whole list but i highly recommend the English patched version of Valkyrie chronicles 3. Others are Persona 3 Portable and the fantastic Final Fantasy 7 crisis core

You need a copy of the rom first, then u have to spend ages installing the patch which u can get online but the website itself keeps coming up as flagged these days by any virus checker i use. I only managed to get this version as i mentioned this to someone i know and they said they had it. So i got mine from a friend which was patched about a year ago.

Its grindy but its a jrpg. ITs part of the experience, especially old ones. Idk why but japan just loves grind

I know but its exceptionally grindy. Even by old Jrpg standards. I understand there was a big emphasis on this game being online and its features only really working to the fullest by using those online features.....but after about 17 hours and the progress I had made I genuinely felt as if the game was designed to hate me at every turn. I did love this game and think its experience everyone should play and it is indeed one of the PSPs true hidden gems. Yet it just always feels like a constant uphill struggle.

How does it hold up without online mode? I played it for 10h and it becomes kind of stale, same missions etc. I can imagine the game would be better if I could, as intended by the publisher, send my knight to battle in the online mode and start training new knights in the solo mode but without it the game, although beautiful, seems very bland and there so no real incentive to train new characters. Combat only differs for the main bosses battles, which are very rare and for 99% of time you fight with cannon fodder enemies when you use the same attacks. The online mode was going to be the main mode of this game so without it the game loses it's direction.

That is essentially true. The online mode WAS meant to be the games big attraction but without it the game does get a tad repetitive. It's still an extremely beautiful game with gorgeous artwork and incredible music but the game play does become extremely hard very quickly and that + the lack of online + the repetitive nature of the game will put a lot of people off i think. Truth is i feel its down to the PSP hardware/software yet again. Just like in some of my other PSP reviews you realise very quickly the PSP is very limited on what it can/cant do and as a result lots of corners are cut in games such as P3P and others.

This game is too beautiful to be as boring and incomplete as it is. Basically it's just the map and turn based aspect you get in other games like FF but none of the other content, no actual environment to explore. Map, Turns, and Text Sequences. that's it. If you like that, have at it.

Sadly a lot of that was due to the budget but also the PSP limitations. They also had the idea of it mostly being an online game which way back then was a pretty radical way of thinking. We take the whole online thing for granted these days but back then it was games like this which were experimenting with it all. The game does feel rather barren with its context though....especially when compared to something like FF7Crisis Core
