I love this, I just went back and finished this game and getting recommended such an impressive speed run of it is really cool. the mission fail state manipulation is particularly what I'm fascinated by, I hope to see one day someone explain how it works.

I remember playing this on a school night when it first came out and I beat it in under an hour cause I had school the next day and had to see how the story would end haha good times 😅.

Glossary/Explanations from @guywithalightsaber himself on his pinned comment Replays - Pressing F1 will show you the last ~30 seconds of gameplay, F2 will save it, F3 will play the saved replay. Rampage - A minigame that gives you the goal of killing a certain amount of people in a limited amount of time. They are activated by collecting a blue icon with a skull. Possible Questions Q: Why does the camera change so much? A: The top-down camera view makes traffic disappear. This can either be used by super quickly going through all the camera angles or just using the top-down camera on its own. Q: What’s the flashing that happens when you enter a car? A: This is called a megajack/megaenter. Using replays as you enter a vehicle at the right time will skip the animation either partially or entirely depending on if a driver is present and the car doors. Q: What are you looking for [after the first mission]? A: I am looking for a taxi as I will need it later on to use the taxi driver side-mission to start a mission with a rampage. Q: What are you looking for [after Don’t Spank Ma Bitch Up]? A: I am looking for a police officer or a police car to shoot to later obtain a police car of my own. This gives me shotgun ammo for “Van Heist,” an opportunity to get a pistol for “Farewell ‘Chunky’ Lee Chong,” and overall a fast vehicle for the next few missions. Q: What are you looking for [after Cipriani's Chauffeur]? A: I am looking for a taxi for a complicated setup to instantly pass an upcoming mission “Salvatore’s Called a Meeting.” The firetruck plays a role in this as well. Q: What are you looking for [after respawning at the hospital]? A: I will need the nearby ambulance for the mission “Triads and Tribulations.” It has a 30% chance of being locked so I will often die to try again. Aside from this, it is usually the fastest vehicle nearby. Q: What’s the significance of rampages/replays? Why do you stand in random spots? A: If I’m standing in a corner, I am usually saving a replay over where a rampage icon would be. I will later play the same replay to pick up the rampage remotely to start missions with them. The goal is to either start the same mission twice to pass it quicker, or to start another mission once the rampage timer runs out. Q: What’s the weird teleport/super jump? A: This is called a megajump. When you punch/shoot, jump, and then play a replay, in that order, it will shoot you forwards at a very high speed; the same thing can be achieved from jumping twice. This trick is used sparingly as it is easy to die from it unintentionally. Conversely, it is often used to intentionally die very quickly. Q: What’s the flashing that happens [during Bomb Da Base]? A: Playing a replay stops the in-game clock seen on the top right. An upcoming mission “Sayonara Salvatore” uses the in-game clock to give a time where Salvatore leaves Luigi’s Club. By stopping the clock and starting this mission at an earlier time, Salvatore leaves the club earlier. The use of this trick is called faking. Q: What's XX:30 and what does it mean? A: It refers to the time Salvatore is estimated to leave Luigi’s Club on the mission “Sayonara Salvatore.” It can be seen with this message at the start of the mission:  This time is used as a measure of how fast a Portland segment is. The earlier, the better. The use of faking (see previous question for context) for a Portland time is called a fake XX:30. Achieving a Portland time without intentionally stopping the clock is called a real XX:30. Getting a real Portland time is faster than a fake one because the use of replays stops gameplay progression. In other words, it’s like pausing the game. Q: How do you have so many rockets/M16 ammo? A: By playing a replay at the exact moment a rampage ends, you keep the ammo given to you for the rampage. This trick can easily be missed as the time window is 1/30th of a second. If I am doing a mission differently that is usually done with an M16 or rocket launcher, it is because of this. Q: What are you waiting for [on Sayonara Salvatore]? A: I collect the rampage icon at a specific time so that the rampage ends a little after I pick up the next mission “Under Surveillance.” This allows me to start the mission again as soon as possible. Q: Why did you reset after starting a rampage [before Last Requests or Paparazzi Purge]? A: The goal is to start the rampage and start the mission at the same time. This is called a mandupe. Because of how the game checks for certain events to happen (in other words, checking to see if you’ve collected a rampage icon or if you’re in a mission marker), it is very inconsistent. It is a major timeloss if the rampage starts but the mission doesn’t and vice versa. Q: Why do you play replays specifically before the turn of the hour (XX:59, XX:00)? A: If you press F3-F1 when the in-game clock ends with :59, and then play the same replay with F1 afterwards, you increase the value used to represent the current weather that’s being cycled through this array. This trick is often used to skip rain since rainy weather comes with slow and sluggish rain physics. It is crucial to have as clear weather as possible for “A Drop in the Ocean” as rainy and foggy weather affect water waves. The replay that you see at XX:00 is me playing an F3 replay so that I don’t unintentionally advance the weather when doing something else. Q: Why use a molotov for Sayonara Salvatore? A: The molotov rampage is the closest rampage we can reasonably get to while having enough downtime to glitch a car for a later mission, “Espresso-2-Go!” Enough damage is dealt to the car so it can later on set on fire with one sniper rifle shot, which will subsequently destroy the stall that it’s next to. Q: What’s the blue loading screen/Why do you play replays after getting in the firetruck? A: I am trying to create a 0-frame replay. It requires me to play an F3 replay in its entirety and press F2 at the first possible frame once it is done playing. I will know if I’ve done it successfully if the ‘Welcome to Portland’ loading/splash screen appears. The use of these replays are supposed to make getting 30k ammo easier since loading screens buffer inputs and require less precision.

I love speedruns in games but every single one with GTA III is absolutely unwatchable due to constant camera changing. I know this is a way to reset/remove traffic but still
Gta is one of those games as a kid that if you get stuck up on a mission it could take you months to beat the game or even years after giving up. Nowadays it can be beat in an hour lol

Impressionante, nunca vi ninguém tão bom no GTA 3 como você, principalmente pilotando o Dodô. O único problema é que fica alterando muito a câmera, isso me deixou um pouco tonto. Mas parabéns, você é muito bom
Despawns (or helps with despawning) traffic. GTA 3 and Vice City have fixed cameras so unlike GTA San Andreas where you flick the camera to despawn traffic, cycling through cameras does it. Staying on top down view usually means he can go through a long stretch of road without traffic

I remember when I was 7 years old and I found a ps2 and connected it to the tv but thI controller was lost but the first game in it was gta 3 but with the controller being lost I was stuck at the first scence
