My favourite race car driver of all time. I have no doubt, if he had lived, he would be driving a tractor at his farm in Scotland today as a five or a six time world champion.
He most definitely would have, he is definitely up there with all the greats. But he was definitely unique for the way he went about racing in different tournaments and still won! Unbelievable talent which was lost so soon! Thank you for your comment 😉👍🏻
Their is actually a picture of graham hill and a very young Damon hill pushing Jim Clark on (what I presume to be ) Damon hills toy tractor at a house party
Maybe even more. I mean think about it, he still holds records today with most lead percentage. Also, out of all the races he didn't have external factors hindering him, he won pretty much all of them.
@@SkullBusters ... Top Gear // Grand Tour.. should solely be stories about legendary racing drivers and their cars and occasionally the hosts driving said legendary cars.. mixed in with new car reviews. Chris Harris on Top Gear would be AMAZING at doing exactly what I described.. Tbh if BBC told Chris Harris they were doing what I said, he would probably jizz his pants.
Would be brilliant if they had these features more often. Not sure if he’ll jizz in his pants, but he’ll definitely get a boner and could take someone’s eye out 😉👍🏻
I don't much care for the video game portions, which have zero historical or entertainment value as far as I feel. However, Jim Clark is THE Benchmark for being a real human being who is other-worldly fast in automobiles. Crisp, clean, precise and willing to drive next to trees a foot from the edge of the track at 200 mph at speeds few could duplicate once let alone for an entire race. It broke my heart when he died, and pushed me away from auto racing for decades afterward. He would never crash into another competitor for an advantage, or cheat, or engage in any activity which threatened anything other than the lap record and how far ahead he would finish ahead of all the rest of the best in the world. So sad he passed. Rest In Peace World Champion. You are not forgotten. Thank you for this piece. Blurry eyed as something is in my eyes from remembering those days, and this great driver.
Wow you’ve pretty much said everything good that can said about Jim Clark, to do what he did will never be achieved by anyone. He definitely is one of the greats and a true legend of the sport. Thank you for comment we really appreciate it and are glad that you enjoyed the video. 😉👍🏻
I am Senna fan, alway been and i always thinking that Senna was greatest driver of all time. I was wrong. After watching this episode of GT and see what Jim achieved in his carrier, especially in season 1965. when he take 5 championships in 5 different classes and drove 60+ races win at 31...he is best F1 driver of all time period.
I've been telling people for years that Jim Clark is the greatest. Think about this - people will debate whether or not Senna is the greatest or Schumacher is the greatest or Alonso or Hamilton or whoever. But no one has ever dared to deny someone of saying Jim Clark is the greatest. You just cannot argue against what he achieved especially in comparison to others.
I think it’s hard to pick a overall greatest driver, but I personally wouldn’t consider modern day drivers in the same bracket as Jim Clark, Senna etc. Because of the safety aspect, consider the cars that they drive today compared to cars back then, they knew every time they got in the car I could kill them! If you ask all modern day drivers to get in and drive cars with no safety features, how many would do it? Honestly I think hardly no one would do it, so that’s what separates modern drivers from the true racing drivers. But what Jim Clark Achieved was something remarkable which will never be achieved again 😉👍🏻
@@SkullBusters I agree that back then it was definitely tougher for so many reasons. I agree modern drivers aren't as good nor are they as disciplined as those of the past. I do think that modern drivers and all of us would still love to drive back then though. At the end of the day we all love racing and we would jump in an F1 car in a split second. whether it's the 60s, 90s 10s or whatever. We all love racing and no fear will get in the way of our passion. Past drivers are still greater though regardless.
In July I toured Scotland, part of it was a pilgrimage to the new Jim Clark Museum in Duns, and to his grave. It was a privilege to do both, this man was my childhood hero. I still believe he was the greatest driver of all time, and taken from us all too soon 😢.
I was fortunate to watch Jim Clark race three times during the Tasman Series mentioned in the video; the last was 1968 almost a month to the day before he was killed. Ironically he didn't win any of the main races I watched; the 1968 race which he would have won if it hadn't poured with rain was won by Piers Courage, another sadly missed driver.
I've heard the name Jim Clark before being mentioned just a few times in my 31 years among old gear heads here in Jamaica. But i never knew noting of his greatness until watching this Grand Tour Episode today. Thanks for the history lesson. He seemed he was quite the awesome chap in his day
My Grandfather was also a farmer in the border country and Jim was his cousin. My Dad has told me all about the day he died and what it meant to the extended family. He brought so much hope and pride and seemed invincible at the time. It’s nice to know that people still remember him. R.I.P Jim.
There's a BBC4 documentary on you tube about Jim Clark that is just a wonderful and brilliant tribute. This is great. The other is quite amazing. Jim Clark is, with Senna, the best ever. Legend. Icon. Words often used. But they are totally appropriate for Jim Clark.
I think he doesn’t get the credit he deserves, F1 done a poll recently of the greatest driver Jim Clark wasn’t even mentioned! A crime! He deserves more recognition
@@SkullBusters I can only think they asked people who knew nothing at all of motor racing!! Jim Clark is beyond doubt and by anybodys estimation one of the very greatest ever. As I've said. To me, Jim Clark and Senna stand alone. Well done with the vid. Great job!
Imagine the battles Jim Clark would have had with guys like Niki Lauda.. James Hunt.. Fittipaldi.. Andretti.. Would have been fun to see Clark against them.
Skull Busters if you play Gran Turismo Sport / Crew 2 / NFS PB on PS4 , check my ig out for awesome livery pics at Shinigami_919 or on the Gran Turismo Website / psn at puffitbytheOz 👍 I can make custom liveries for ya
The great triumvirate, for me, has always been Senna, Fangio and Clark. If you were to force me to pick one, I'd have to go for Jimmy; the fact that Ayrton and Juan Manuel agree is good enough for me
Surprised they didn't mention Monza 1967 - surely one of his greatest races although he only finished third. He led the race until lap 12 when he picked up a puncture and lost an entire lap. He then spent the next 48 laps recovering through the field, unlapping himself, and unbelieveably taking the lead on lap 60. He was pulling away but on the final lap ran out of fuel which allowed Jack Brabham and John Surtees to pass.
Skip times for those pesky copyright-evading video game sequences ;) 6:25 9:07 10:46 13:47 Thank you for the upload, SB, dunno how many times I've watched this masterpiece here before realizing no one's listed them yet (as far as I can tell)!
It’s definitely our favourite episode for sure, it’s a brilliant feature that they done on a great driver. Hope that they do more of these features on past drivers! 😉👍🏻
Some info is kinda bs though regarding Indy racing. He did not win the 500 his rookie year, I believe in 1964 he had gotten second place. He was however the first person to win in a rear engine indycar ever while at Milwaukee (mile oval) which set the standard for the next generation of Indy cars. Then he won Indy in 65.
Oh ok I don’t know too much about Indy cars tbh, I know about it obviously and have watch a few races, but the history of Indy cars and winners is something I don’t know about. But thank you for sharing the info, he still was a great driver and hard for anyone to get close to some of his achievements 😉👍🏻
Skull Busters no doubt about it. But the way they presented the information would be the equivalent of saying Dan Gurney went over to F1 and beat everybody in his Gurney eagle at the Belgian Grand Prix, that being his first race.
They didn't mention that Clark almost certainly would have won in his rookie year in 1963 if there hadn't been a very controversial decision not to black flag Parnelli Jones.
Heritage and retro videos like this are a positive pleasure to watch again and again. I have just watched the Ford Vs Ferrari video on here too, presented by James May. Excellent footage and commentary.. My best mate is involved in this industry, he got me into the pits at Donnington once to watch him race. A grand day out. Also I went to the 50th anniversary of Silverstone with him and his dad. Another memorable day. Jim Clark what an absolute racing legend..
To me Jim Clark will always be the greatest driver of them all. Even Senna thought he was. He should have been World champion in 1962 and 1964 but his car let him down
Absolutely my boyhood driving hero as a young laddie growing up in Scotland in the 1960's. A wonderful driver & a wonderful human being. Jim you are loved ♥🏴💙
The footage is from the grand tour game in which you play the episode, so has if you were Jim Clark driving the original cars he drove. Hope this helps 😉👍🏻
As someone who didn't know who Jim Clark was, how in the hell did he manage to do the stuff in Australian, The British Formula 2, The French Formula 2, The Indy 500 in the states, the Touring Car stuff and the Formula One stuff, was Colin Chapman OK with his best driver just jetting off to other countries to race?
Born just up the road from me at Kilmany Fife there's a statue of him at a siding as you drive past the guy could drive anything and win unlike today's F1
My dad was at Hockenheim on April 7, 1968 at that race while he was stationed in Germany. He had gone up that weekend to watch Jim Clark. The announcement came over the loudspeaker "Jim Clark ist tote."
I would disagree... Clark "the best of all time" (not my words, but Fangios in 1994), Alonso (how he is able to outperform a shi** car is unique, Fangio and Stefan Bellof (Schumachers idol and a guy so talented, the Old Man himself gave him a Ferrari-Contract for 1986 after his first F1 race)
After hearing about him, I don’t think there was or will there ever be a champion who was more gifted and more natural than him to have graced this sport. Another legend who we lost too soon! RIP dear Jim Clark and thank you Grand Tour for sharing with us this beautiful piece of history!
Back when formula one was a proper sport and not the health and safety parade it is now. Clutches, gear levers, almost regular tyres....formula one has been boring since the 80’s
Yea because flying tyres and debris killing spectators, marshalls, and other racers were fun and engaging. Where no engine limitations and design led to dirty plays, dangerous designs, often leading to near fatal injury was viewed as "fun"
He died the same week of my 6th birthday and I have vague recollections of hearing of his death. Still regarded by many as the greatest driver as all time.
