Like judo or jujitsu class. Arm and wrist locks very painful especially for guys who aren't used to it. Thanks for hanging in there to help us all learn and see the effectiveness. Much respect.
I was fortunate to meet and train with him back in late 1970s when he first came to usa to share his knowledge. Excellent instructor, good man, very dedicated to his country's indigenous martial art style. A patient instructor who loves to teach and teaches well. Last we saw each other was NYC. Now he's teaching all over the world, which was his goal when I first met him.
Greetings I'm a student of Dave Winks. He and Eric Knaus were training partners and contemporaries of Tom Bisio, Bob Vetter and Bill McGrath (I've been fortunate to train with him as well) grettings!
I can't believe I am just now finding this video! I had the extreme pleasure of being"beat up" by Grand Tuhon Gaje a few years back in Ft Lauderdale. It is incredibly educational, indescribably humbling, and unimaginably enjoyable. One of the greatest experiences if have ever had in my martial arts journey. Thank you for sharing this.
2:49 When he place GT's hand on his forehead that was a sign of respect not only as a master but as an elderly in Philippine culture. They call it "mano po" which is so parallel to the "mano y mano" hand to hand combat skills of Kali.
I don't know it seemed like you were not even trying and just trying to suck up to him. I mean what if you REALLY tried to stab him with the trainers? Would it work out so effortlessly for him? If he slapped me that hard when I was demonstrating with him and being kind I would have to slap him back. Seems abusive when he does that.
MaharlikaAWA totally understand. It was just a demo on Gt reaction and moves he would pull. Not a real fight etc. he has done live stick fighting with us. Even at his age. And that’s a treat
Between Master Leo and Master Billy i spent more time on the floor then on my feet... wishing both of them and all the newest students peace and good things !!!
A special thanks from me to the big guy doing the attacks - for going on for so long and in so many different ways and thus making this demo so informativ. He must be pretty tough too. It is YOU, the owner of the channel, right?
I agree with Ricky Tang. Even though I trained with Master Gaji and several other martial art systems, in the street everything changes; nothing is predictable. My first training was boxing since I was a kid, in the ring and bare hands at night in back yards with challengers from other neighborhoods. All of it served me well in every situation that I was in where I had to fight to defend myself in real street situations as well as in martial arts in military and civilian life. Master Gaji is well aware of the difference between class situations and actual street situations. He always taught that in a real knife fight everything is amplified ten fold, and that when the other person has a knife and you don't, the knife holder has the edge-literally. You look for an equalizer and apply the most direct skill you can and forget the fancy stuff. This is just as when applying bare handed boxing skills mixed with martial arts. With all the fancy training one receives in any martial arts class, you always see competitors knock out opponents mostly with direct boxing techniques. In military rifle with bayonet combat training, the techniques are modeled after the same direct motions as boxing. Nothing prepares a person for real self defense like direct experience on the street. However, the best self defense is to develop the kind of alertness that recognize potential danger, and then remove oneself from such environments. Besides, what can happen in a real situation, regardless of what you know, and because outcomes are unpredicatable, you, and not the other guy, can land in jail instead. So be wise enough to incorporate knowledge of the law and how law-enforcement operates; avoid conflict and let them do the fighting for you 99% of the time. There was a well known master who always said, "when threatened, run away as fast as you can, but run with confidence."
kudos to yah brother by letting the Grand Tuhon slap and throw you down😁😀👊💪😎👏👍respect to yah brother. i'm a Filipino btw. greeting back here in the Philippines. keep safe brotha.👏😎💪🙏
Thanks for uploading, very informative video. I would like to see Pekiti-Tirsia techniques against the common sewing machine or prison shanking knife attacks.
I am a pekiti practitioner as well. You can see some of what you are looking for here in this video, in that the parry or cover is accompanied by a "slap" or other distracting/damaging counterattack that does a great job of breaking the focus and intent of the attacker. I'm with you...the attacks I worry about are savage and aggressive. The best counters I practice involve simultaneous ear slaps/eye pokes/throat chops with a covering move.
From those techniques Spaniard led by Ferdinand Magellan beaten from the first battle of Mactan. Cebu Philippines in CQB using Filipino sword and knives. Kali Systems is an art of subduing an enemy in just a split of second. Filipino of early days are of a warrior class in majority.
To be honest. You can only apply these moves to those who dont know how to fight with weapons. Lets say 2 kali warriors fight a real death match. It will only last 1-2 clash so the whole match will be how to close the gap. A take down, disarm etc will be the 1st and last.
Same move of my Lolo, we try to scare him by surprise pretending attack and we get a massive slaps, it was me I'm my cousin thou. My Lolo is not a Kali master but he learned some basic Kali moves from his Lolo also.
I showed this video to my husband, he survived over decade in prison, the truest knife culture on earth, where murder by blades y ice picks is S.O.P..I asked what he thinks, for knife defense training, he looked sad y said this isn't how knife fighters nor knife assassins attack. Those defenses wouldn't help you at all against prison knife attackers who tie a knife to their dominant hand y attack like a trained boxer (many having trained competitive boxing) or using collegiate wrestling to take you off feet then shank you ground & pound style. He says it's fantasy play what's in this video, for men whom never fought life or death against an adrenalized raging knifer whose not gonna feel punches or slaps nor pepper spray. In prison he saw men pepper sprayed w/OC spray still fight thru it like nothing. Men got tazed y fought thru it. One man snatched an ice pick lodged in his jaw bone, after body slamming his attacker, having been scalded w/boiling water & magic shave and stabbed, then pulling the stuck weapon from his jaw bone stabbed the body slammed assassin repeatedly in the chest, killing him, despite his horrible wounds. Adrenaline y rage in real combat nullify a lot of striking, especially stinging slaps. My husband's view on this video, from decade plus experience surviving the thunder dome. So Keep that in mind while sipping the koolaid. It's still fun to watch, like a Jackie Chan movie. Just don't believe this is how you want to disarm a raging adrenalized knifer. I know this is how these instructors pay their bills, by teaching this fantasy play to the uninitiated, maybe the bolo fencing is legit, my husband says he trained that in Army, for machete, but don't drink the koolaid w/the knife disarms y slap attacking a raging knifer.
Nona Quade understand where you’re coming from. I teach numerous knife systems. Watch some of my other videos. This combat art has its expression for military and police and is taught and delivered for them specifically in its manner. Just like anything else, everyone has their own “version of what works”. Thank you for your input.
You might doubt the technique but this man is legit he has been into several knife fight in the philippines and all his agressor are now under 6 ft. I vecation once in prison and fought in a riot.Yes got stabbed but was able to survive because of knowledge of silat!
true...if you have no clue what you're doing or if you have just learned the art. But for those who are trained and had been doing it for a long time, it's all about instinct and muscle memory, believe me, you wouldn't want to try shit on a trained practitioner anywhere.
As a long time student of GrandTuhon and others like Tuhon Mike F. I found out he dishes out the punishment the more you look tough or in shape. He figures you can take it.
If you throw one punch and stop anyone can beat you. First focus and convince yourself you can hit him and beat him and than the journey will start and even if you lose a fight he will respect you.
