Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five was an American hip hop group formed in the South Bronx of New York City in 1978. The group's members were Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel, The Kidd Creole (not to be confused with Kid Creole and Coconuts frontman Kid Creole), Keith Cowboy, Mr. Ness/Scorpio and Rahiem. The group's use of turntablism, break-beat DJing, and conscious lyricism were significant in the early development of hip hop music.
In the late 1970s, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five built their reputation and achieved local success by performing at parties and live shows. By 1980, the group had signed with Sugar Hill Records. Under Sugar Hill Records, the group rose to prominence in the early 1980s with their first hit "Freedom". It was not until the release of the song "The Message" in 1982 and the album of the same name that they achieved mainstream success. The song provided a political and social commentary and went on to become a driving force behind conscious hip-hop.
"The Message" is a song by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. It was released as a single by Sugar Hill Records on July 1, 1982 and was later featured on the group's first studio album, The Message.
"The Message" was the first prominent hip hop song to provide a social commentary rather than the self-congratulatory boasting or party chants of earlier hip hop. The song's lyrics describe the stress of inner city poverty.
"The Message" took rap music from the house parties of its origin to the social platforms later developed by groups like Public Enemy and KRS-One.[3] Melle Mel said in an interview with NPR: "Our group, like Flash and the Furious Five, we didn't actually want to do 'The Message' because we was used to doing party raps and boasting how good we are and all that."[4]
The song was first written in 1980 by Duke Bootee and Melle Mel, in response to a transit strike that year, which is mentioned in the song's lyrics.[5][unreliable source?]. The stanza "A Child is Born" was taken from an early Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five track, "Superrappin'" from 1979 on the Enjoy label. -Wikipedia

Yes and this is why the Bronx looks like it looked when this song was made because the looting in 1977. The Bronx finally rebuild in 2000. So all this looting that they doing this is what it is going to look like! New Yorker, born raised1
@tom11zz884
@tom11zz884 4 года назад
I don't agree or condone the lootings..but let's not act like they are looting for no reason. When people are abused by the police and crying out for help, and people are not hearing their cries, sometime people have a breaking point, and unfortunately, rioting and looting occurs. Looting and rioting has happened throughout history in every country when people are fighting the system for change
4 года назад
@@tom11zz884 Yea and if history changed it, black folks wouldn't still be looting to this day. CLEARLY, It's time to try something new. LET'S BE CLEAR protesting is fine but looting and violence ain't what's up everybody doing it ain't down for the cause either, they just like the adrenaline rush. You ain't tearing up the got damn suburbs and further more I don't know nobody black named Tom unless it got Uncle in front of it, So you GTFOH!!!👋👋👋

Thanks for uploading this reelblack. I had the opportunity to speak with Melle Mel and Scorpio a number of times and their insight into the development of the hip hop culture and industry is vital to understand how it has evolved as it has, i.e. from Mel warning of street life to the modern glorification of street life. Suffice it to say Mel was not very happy with modern hip hop!

Well qualified to teach hiphop history, not only because of interviews with the artist over the decades, he also knows many as friends- from west coast to east and south. @Fellow Citizen: Make a plan for where you wanna be in a year, 3 years, 7 years, 9 years from now... and stick with it. I remember Mr. T saying, "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail!" I took that advice... I wanted to leave NYC to escape the cold weather and the mentality that goes with it in the worst way... In 2011 I hatched a plan to get out, and get out I did. I left the america this February, on time, and according to plan. Have faith in yourself, never give up hope, and never EVER take 'NO' for an answer. Persist. Insist. Persevere. And don't feel sorry for yourself. That sh!t's for suckers! You don't wanna drown--swim!

*Eastside Low Bottoms shit !* I'm from South Central Los Angeles, in my mid 40's. As long as I've listened to this song, in recent years i really LISTENED to this song. This has to be the most realistic song, possibly of all time ! Melle Mel's last verse could literally be the basis for a movie or someone's life story. I dig how it goes from the birth of a baby boy, the trials and tribulations of growing up in a tough environment, how he becomes who and what he is, where it puts him, and his eventual death. Brilliant. Salute to the OG's. Much love and respect. ✊🏾✊🏾

My city built a youth center last year near my home. Beautiful basketball court and pool. Less than a year later they closed the center due to an increase in crime and vandalism. Just last night we had a double shooting. I doubt that shooting would have happened if the kids had that youth center to enjoy. We have to stop expecting these kids to be perfect and understand that they just need places to have fun.

@reelblack
@reelblack 4 года назад
Good question. Probably never. I don’t see an advantage of over processing SD video. Anything prior to 2006/2007 is likely interlaced video at minimum, even if it’s HD. When we film original content, it’s 24p then rendered out on a 30p timeline. Standard def video (1948-2000s) was always 480p/30fps. I generally upscale things to 720p so it looks fairly good on HD tv. 60fps is doubling the frame rate, but if it was done at 30 originally and you are blowing up the size by 1/3rd, all you are asking for is more noise and artifacts.
