A vid of me doing Grandmaster Flash's Wheels Of Steel Routine - All Vinyl.....Straight up, no costume changes, disappearing watches, or video edits....What you see is what you get...
Maximum respect from all the turntablists around the world who know this routine beat for beat and can appreciate how spot fucking on you nailed it !! All I can say is that routine got me to buy my first mixer in 1986 ! Well done 👍🏼
if you feeling that - you gotta check this cat out doing the "Darth Vader" sh!t.... One of the most epic genius sh!t i have ever seen and manifested on the decks. It's bananas son - check the whole set - but DAMMMNN!!! he brought that Obi Wan light saber blade sh!t at about 1:40 . YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED! Bought the vinyl in 1981 and it began a nearly 40 year musical journey for me that’s still continuing. Amazing to see this done live for the first time. Respect 🤜🏽💥🤛🏽
Always remember seeing Grandmaster Flash tearing down Wembley at UK Fresh 86 with the Furious Five and of course being able to witness his turntable fitness doing his Wheels of Steel routine - fantastic and awe inspiring memories of when deejays were real deejays with their decks, mixer and a stack of funky breaks on vinyl and no pre programmed BS or laptops!
What a great fantastic tribute to Grandmaster Flash! The first time I heard that record was in a club in Honolulu Hawaii in 1981 and I had to ask the DJ who it was and bought it as soon as I returned to the mainland. It made me want to be a DJ! EXCELLENT JOB! ❤
I have heard the original recording of this routine 1000 times or more. I have memorized every cut, break and nuance of this record and can honestly say I thought I was watching an impostor until about 3/4 of the way when some of the scratches sound levels and track clicks and pops of some sections didn't match the original which was a very pleasant surprise. Awesome job man.👍
I also know the original by memory since I was 12 I've been listening to it and in my opinion he's playing the original and pretend that he is scratching I hope I'm wrong
this was fire. only one thing - Flash did it ambidextrous-ly; spinning with the mixer in the middle - cutting & scratching.... WITH BOTH hands. it's a dj science thing; everybody wouldnt understand.
Yo, this is EPIC! Much respect. I've been cutting and mixing since the 90s and I don't think a lot of people "get" the difficulty level here (timing, pitch, etc.) So dope. I know flash apparently used 3 tables but the one thing I've always wanted to know is how he did the "flash is/good", "flash is/good" part. Those party noises had to have been the crew live in the studio with him just cutting "good" in response to the live MC because there's no way to "juggle" that part that I can think of. Anyway, this was ill.
So, there are actually two versions. The original version did not have Melle Mel and the crowd, it ended just like DJJOHNNYM did here. It was at least a month or two after the first one came out that the extended version with Melle Mel's rap came out. I can remember exactly where I was when I first heard the extended version!
👏👏👏👏👏 Fantastic!👏👏👏 👏👏 I've heard the original countless times over the past 25 years or so. It was pretty much the anthem to my teenage years, so it holds a special place in my heart. It also means I know it inside-out by ear, and this blew my mind. Amazing. 👌 Great to see how it's done with the video too! Thanks!
Happened upon this video after going down an '80s electrofunk rabbithole. The only thing that gave it away as not being the original was the digital recorder. Without that detail I would have been convinced it was the original mix. Brilliant work!
This one also sounds a lot cleaner compared to the og. Not necessarily digital in the squashed sense we're so familiar with nowadays, but the original is just super thick and dirty. I kinda like this one a little bit better.
yes they do... it's just record companies don't want to license tracks... check THIS out! (C2C destroying all competition at DMC 2005) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iP-86de-oUA.html
Absolutely!! I myself have been djing since the 80's. I come across alot of younger dj's that sound good using Serato or Edjing app but would be a disaster spinning vynal. I always make it very clear that spinning vynal shows your true skills as a dj.
I did this same routine back in 2000 my senior talent show. RU-vid blocked the video. This is how i learned to scratch, juggle (Cue burned the f outta some records lol). Its a shame youtube shunned me. Great job man!
Man..you have brought tears in my eyes with some really cool memories. However, the way it is being done in a live session is just unbelievably perfect.Much respect, man you just made my day
As this record is THEE sole reason I wanted to learn how to DJ back in 1981 , I can say Brother DJ Johnny M... Great show of study, skill and respect of and for the greatest DJ ever, my and our musical father Grandmaster Flash! #salute
Thanks for bringing me back to my very first time I heard it.....loooong time ago. It surprises me how I still remember all the cuts and scratches... thanks.
Amazing, I used to listen to this on the way to school in a taxi in 1981, the taxi driver used to play it all the time and you have done it complete justice, AMAZING skills...👏👏👏!!!!!
Even caught the phase at the end! Incredible set. Top boy for pulling off what every scratch DJ, vinyl manipulator or turntablist have all fantasised about! Easy as you made that look you had to have grafted to get that set tight. Thank you rockerfellah for that was mustard!
I don't EVER comment, but GODDAMN!!!... I hope half the people, that are luck enough to see this video, understand what DA F*** you just did!... Keep it up. MAD PROPS BRO!!!
I was actually looking for an original recording but I guess you're spot-on with this one. Good work! Songs used (for those who care): Monster Jam by Spoonie Green Rapture by Blondie Good Times by Chic Apache by Incredible Bongo Band Another One Bites the Dust by Queen
Human error at 3:22 😀. And a few very, very minor ones which truly shows this is a true replication of the original, and not a fake. It takes a lot of talent to reproduce this
Wow...I'm blown away....I'm very much impressed...my hat goes off to you young man ..I just subscribed to your channel...GRAND MASTER FLASH WAS MY FAVORITE DJ GROWING UP & TO THIS DAY HE STILL IS...MUCH RESPECT TO YOU MY BROTHER 👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Flash is one of the greatest DJs to have ever touched a turntable. If anyone was lucky enough to have this 12 inch, Flash gave credits to every sample he used, something unknown during the early 80s.

Wow! This changed my life I remember listening to pirate radio.I remember going what’s this tune? And it blew my mind and made me want to learn scratching ! thank you flash for introducing me to hip-hop culture 👍🏼 I’m an English fan of yours.
Found my comment from a year ago. Since bought a pair of decks and just the amount of skill gone into this is unreal. Can't wait to learn this as a project.
GM Flash is one of my favorite pioneer DJ's who I watched as a kid in the Bronx. Great Tribute. You used the turntables, mixer and LP's as an instrument. I tried to do this with a DJ Controller and could not do what you demonstrate. I like what I saw and enjoyed what I got!
The skill it takes to do this in one take is unbelievable. You sir are probably one of the only people that can do this, besides Grandmaster Flash himself
Grandmaster flash Was right down the street from where I lived back in the day. West side of The boogie down Bronx NY. ( Morton place, between Harrison avenue and university Ave.) Love our old school HISTORY
