Sorry to be that guy, but it isn't mate in 14 necessarily because black does not have to follow that sequence of plays. There were possible lines from black that let white get a queen that doesn't lose the game this way that could take longer than 14 moves.
@elviejohg744
@elviejohg744 4 года назад
@@koolaidjerk I'm a chess beginner, can you tell me why this is the solution to the puzzle if there are another set of moves that will make it last longer? How do they know they reached the solution?

@koolaidjerk 4 года назад
@@elviejohg744 With two good players, if white gets a queen they will win basically 100% of the time. So to prevent that black has to play the way described in the video, which results in the mate in 14 sequence. However, if black just lets white get the queen white will be massively ahead, but it could take longer than 14 moves to get the checkmate.

I used the Stockfish engine on lichess and while watching the video and it was at 6:58 that when I played Bc2+ the level went up to +4.8 for white. This was the winning move that the engine could not spot that Tal could. Before I played this move, the level was at -5.2. Very interesting observation. Also, at 7:12, instead of playing Nf7+, the engine recommends to play Kg4 instead as it avoids the unstoppable mate in 11. I let the engine play itself and the game subsequently ends with white winning after exactly 30 moves after Kg4.

6:47 -- The reason engines (at least those that are set to not examine more than five lines simultaneously) cannot solve the puzzle is because they will not consider the Bc2+ line after Kg6, because it results in White being down two pieces (after Kxh5), and subject to forfeiting any new queen. However, if Bc2+ is manually played, then the engine finds the solution at Depth25. It used to be possible to adjust the settings on Chess(dot)com to have the engine examine ten lines simultaneously, but this was reduced to five maximum some half a year ago, with three being current default. (Low-grade cheaters using default-setting online engines will almost never be given the best moves in "hard" positions in any reasonable amount of time, say, as for Blitz.)
@bezzlebedeviled4756
@bezzlebedeviled4756 4 года назад
Furthermore, following d8=Q, after the engine finally discards Nf7+ (because it finds that this plus capturing the forked queen next turn results in White's king bottling up Black's with checkmate to follow), the engine will calculate endlessly without finding a forced mate for White even though it grants a rating of +8 fairly quickly. With Black refraining from the knight fork, he plays Kg4 instead, and will inevitably seize White's last pawn on g3, after which the material situation is White's queen versus Black's two knights and four pawns in an opposite-colored bishop game -- and Black is capable of lingering on for quite some time after that. With humans playing, it would be quite easy for White to blunder and lose tempo, enabling Black to queen a pawn and win.
@sin2Pi
@sin2Pi 4 года назад
I found that although initial evaluation by Stockfish (both versions 8, 11 installed on my laptop with 10 threads) went for Black, both versions checkmated black when played against each other (v11 against itself, v8 W vs v11 B). I haven't investigated the details yet, but thought that Agadmator should have proceeded w/ solving the puzzle w/ Stockfish regardless of initial eval. Chess evaluation can be a bit chaotic for some positions, I think this is just one of these instances.
@bezzlebedeviled4756
@bezzlebedeviled4756 4 года назад
@@sin2Pi ...they'll only find checkmate if your engine has enough lines such that Bc2 can make the "cut" for consideration, or if you manually fork king and queen with the knight. The position is strongly winning for White with correct play after Black eschew knight-forking, but it is very difficult for White to run a queen against two knights and four extra pawns with bishops still the board; i.e., Black has a lot of "action economy". It's basically a Magnus-style grind to defeat Black, with the first misstep costing you your advantage, and a second enabling Black to queen and easily win with his material advantage -- as he'll quickly have a second queen.)

I tried it in leela and stpckfish they failed but i thought because the engine prunes these moves what if i use an engine that prunes less, or annolder engine so i got rybka which is pretty old and it actually found the move being +3.66 for white at depth 25, but found the move instantly. Im guessing it has something to do with rybka not pruning the moves as early so it found it.

Thing with " Alpha Zero " is it's neither a Human, nor an Engine, it instead is a Neural Net, meaning there is chances in it's hidden layers that it recognizes complex patterns! It already crushes all Humans and Engines, so I would say without a doubt it likely would solve it! Simply due to most of it's moves to begin with no engine or human has been able to compete with it's final form and win! The better question would be if one day " Leela Chess Zero " a new neural network they are working on would be able to solve this, cuz Alpha Zero likely just would due to mass pattern recognitions and a Mate in 14 for a Neural net that has that to back it up is strongly likely to spot and realize the winning sequence of moves, hidden layers are simply biases/weights it shifts around, I'm certain it has experimented in all it's self plays turning a pawn into other pieces that are not just Queens and also prolly has tinkered with the idea to force an opponent to grab a Knight over a Queen, so I'm sure those games do exist, and besides the way it thinks would be closer to how humans would solve rather than brute force that engines do all the time, thus why engines are only able to get to a certain level of strength before they plateau, whereas a neural network with the correct amount of nodes to keep learning will develop super god human and super god engine tactics! :)

Funny thing is the old engine rybka immdeitally found it somehow, i guess it has something to do with less move pruning because stockfish ignores moves it thinks are bad to search faster. I even tried leela and they all failed but somehow the old engine rybka solved it

@sarainiaangelsong440 4 года назад
@@iliillillilli2991 Yeah interesting... maybe then what engines should do is split itself to run 2 runs of itself, hear me out on this so at exact same time can prune as one process and another makes on the spot clone of itself but doesn't prune so that way 2 processes at same time and then that might be just the trick huh? So in the case of old rybka and new not sure if new prunes but if it does, then same thing but no prune and run them side by side as 2 separate thingies so in Arena for example it would look like 2 engines analyzing at same time type of effect, I'm bad at explaining my thoughts at times but that my guess :)

I see your point. But I think that, in cases like puzzles with that complexity, humans who try to solve have an advantage against computers, and that is imagining why certain pieces are present in the puzzle. I will use the knight on a6 as an example: the person who is solving could imagine this knight has a pourpose for black in defending the position (and it has indeed), but the computer will never make this assumption when evaluating the position, because it works in a purely objective way. So these assumptions are very common in puzzles like this, and create an advantage for the human over the machine. But, of course, it doesn't take away the brilliancy of solving such an incredibly hard puzzle.

I didn't really try to solve the puzzle, but I kinda knew it would require something unorthodox like promoting to a knight. However I did not expect it to happen *twice*

It doesn't involve promoting to a knight to attack, it's the only defense and the puzzle is easier if you don't do so

This puzzle should be used to improve SF etc... I mean it's a pretty huge miss for an engine evaluating 200 million moves a second. Goes to show that even engines are light years away from playing "perfect" chess.
@guimauve522
@guimauve522 4 года назад
No the engine is fine as it is. It doesn't find the move quickly because it isn't told that this is a puzzle and that white has a winning position and to keep the computation low enough to not take too long it ends up pruning what is the right answer. There is no way to fix this other than to use more branches which isn't really a solution

I think there's a flaw in the forced checkmate: black is not obliged to make a royal fork on f7. So the position is better for white, but not forced mate.
@thatapollo7773
@thatapollo7773 2 года назад
Well if no royal fork is made white is easily winning When doing puzzles you only need to show the most testing line which would be to do the royal fork and white needs to find M10

@gp2k00
@gp2k00 4 года назад
Qh4 then the King only has Kf3 then Bd1. At that point the King can move towards the bishop to get quickly checkmated or away and get trapped and checkmated in the corner after a few moves. Or maybe even Bd1 immediately brings the hammer down faster.

I don’t get why the compute engines can’t solve this, there are few moves to consider, it’s not a hugely deep tree. Are they so bamboozled by the under-promotions leading to premature pruning?
@RikMaxSpeed
@RikMaxSpeed 3 года назад
I've spent a little time looking at this on using Chess Tiger Pro on my iPhone - the point being to understand why chess computers have difficulty solving this. It seems that the main reason is that the winning moves lead you down a very dark path where you sacrifice a knight and a newly promoted queen, which is then followed by a pretty complex mate in 9, itself involving two black pawn under-promotions to knights in order to delay the mate. Even Alpha-0 and Leela may struggle with this puzzle as they rely on even more aggressive pruning of the search tree. Computers evaluate chess positions by prioritising the most promising moves first and the double sacrifice required combined with the deep analysis to find the mate probably means most programs will simply prune that branch and never explore it to the depth required to find the win. I now appreciate that this is a really beautiful puzzle, with an interesting longest path where black has 4 knights + a black bishop but simply can't get enough control of the white squares to stop the white bishop.
