Just found your video because I found a 700 lb Syenite Boulder that's super hard and I'm losing the battle trying to split it. I used a battery operated diamond blade angle grinder to score it around and then tried chiseling it and hitting it with my very short 10 lb sledge. The rock laughed. It wasn't impressed and after 5 hours, I still couldn't get it to crack anywhere. It's in a remote, impossible to get area, so electricity is not an option, so no hammer drill or air powered jackhammer for this! I have to use battery powered tools or chisels and hammers. What would you suggest? This is really hard stone and about 18 inches thick.

Thank you for a nice demonstration. What is the brand name of the drill bits were you using? Thanks

Great video. Would you post what tools you are using for this job? I'm particularly interested in what drill bit you are using and where you got your feather and wedge kit. Thanks!

feather and wedges from Trow and Holden.... I've used a variety of bits.... Milwaukee and Dewalt I wouldn't recommend... Bosch have been good as well as Hiliti... trying Diablo rebar demon next...

I worked for a man 40 years ago that split stone, we had hammers that weighed around 35 pounds each. Those made a man out of you in a hurry. He was very good at it, very little effort, me on the other hand was a different story.

Makes a ugly wall with all the drill holes. Learn how to split a stone the right way with a splitting sledge.
@WorkshopatTheGardens
@WorkshopatTheGardens Год назад
that's funny.... to each their own in how they want to finish out a wall... better check with the Stone Trust and the DSWA... both teach this method as well as others for splitting stone. Cheers! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Besides you can always knock those drill holes out easy enough OR spin rock so they are in the inside of the wall, always gotta be a Monday quarterback lurking !
