David, we turned back from the exact same place in 2012. Aug 10th. I'm going back with ropes.

Nice video, too bad you had to turn around. I did this solo after my climbing partners turned around before the couloir. Best way to climb Granite Peak in my opinion.

David, in my opinion the safest way to climb this route is solo, with others waiting for your return at the bottom of the couloir. This way if you're overdue, someone is on sight to try to get you help. Taking three and four people up the couloir is very dangerous due to all the loose rock.

Mitchell - That is really not a bad idea. When I did my attempt with Bob, we stayed pretty close together. One of us would climb a little while the other would stand in a place which was safe from rock fall. When the lead person was at a safe place, he would stay put until the second person caught up. Then repeat. In this way, we would avoid the potential for getting hurt by rockfall. The danger is if you get spread out too much, then it is hard to find a place that is safe from rock fall.

Thanks man, I went with 3 guys and me and another returned but the 3rd guy pushed and summited by himself. He said there are some class 4 moves on the ridge.

Awesome video man. That little rock wall in the center of the couloir where you stopped is what stopped me my first try but it was covered in snow and ice. Had you made it over that, its just a scramble up staying to the right and is quite simple actually. That gosh darn wall though. Good luck next time.

+24nthnoak Thanks! Yeah, we should have been able to get over that wall with no problems at all, but Bob was just too worried about getting back down. But, we are going to try again this coming August. This time we plan on going up over the Froze To Death Plateau and take the 'standard' rout. We are going with some folks who have done that climb before, so the only stopper will be the weather.

Your partners turned around 'before' the couloir? There is nothing really difficult until you actually get into the couloir itself. In any case, I intend to go back and give it another try. The worst part about our trip was that we actually did have a rope, but my buddy was too worried about getting back down and running out of time. I will try it again, though. By the way, if your interested, I have a video Trail Guide to Granite Peak for sale at my web site (noted in the video description). It's fully narrated with routes marked and 3D graphic flyovers from Google Earth. It included .klm files for a GPS and other goodies. Check it out.

The last major incident on this route was due to a climber triggering a rock fall, in which two others in the party sustained leg injuries and had to spend two nights on the route until rescue could come. I sprung loose a rock two years ago that was half the size of a refrigerator, was just lucky it missed the guys below me.
