Pure professionalism! It happened, he dealt with it, and played his performance! Grandpa Jones...an absolutely incredible performer! Rest in peace dear Sir! Thank you for your contributions to humanity and you will not be forgotten!
Grandpa Jones was married to my grandma's cousin Ramona. My Granddad, Grandma and Grandpa and Ramona Jones used to sit out on the front porch and play music together when they came to visit. We were in Southern Indiana at the time in a little town called Raglesville, close to Oden. The Amish would bring their own instruments and sit and play also. I was just a kid then, but I sure miss them days.😊
Grandpa gave a lesson in life. When unexpected occurs, you don't stop and cry. You deal with it and get on with life. The mark of a winner. RIP Grandpa.
I remember very clear in my mind the night this happened. During the taping, Grandpa broke a string on his banjo. The just let the tape roll while he replaced the string, retuned the banjo and finished the number. They went ahead and aired the wholeordeal on the show. It took several minutes to air this, but it was worth it.
The unedited version... Cathy Baker: "Uh-oh! Grandpa broke a string" Roy Clark: "He broke his what?" Cathy: "His banjo string" Roy: "Well, tell him to fix it!" (Cut over to Grandpa working on his banjo) Grandpa: "I'm as nervous as a cat in a dog show..." (Cut back to Roy Clark, laughing at that quip, then back to Grandpa still putting the new string on) Grandpa: "Ya see all them producers and everything up there and...tension's got me, that's it" (Cut to Junior Samples, sitting in a chair and napping. Then back to Grandpa who is back on stage. He plucks the strings to test them) Cathy: "And now, here's Grandpa Jones with his banjo string fixed"
You forgot to mention the Buckaroos who were playing back up to Grandpa, were also laughing pretty hard, especially Don Rich, and on camera. This particular scene from Her Haw cracks me up every time I see, no matter how many times, even from when I first saw this episode when it first aired on CBS.
Grandpa should have followed Briscoe Darling's advice and "Just kinda let that thumb hang free and enjooooy the music!" Haha. What a legend and great performer Grandpa Jones was! How could you NOT get excited when he has such energy and he's bouncing and stomping those feet like that???!!! Thanks for posting this.

So, my Nashville story....in the 90's I was at the now-defunct Opry Theme Park and my then wife came running, grabbing my hand. On a make-shift stage was Grandpa Jones playing his banjo and singing. Just awesome!
Me, who started playing banjo: Grandpa Jones? Hmmm sounds like something to listen to... Me, after seeing Grandpa Jones: we must protect this man, he is an national treasure.
What has happened to this world, this is when life was good, I remember it was such a treat to get to watch Hee Haw with my family when I was a little boy. country Keenan.
@@SuperOlds88 I think I had two high Es and one B breaking under me over the course of the years, and each time, the loud "pow!" scared me. I never ended up in the hospital, but I remember that the B string knocked me over the hand pretty hard, and the split end of a high E pierced my finger once when I was removing it. The string had snapped close to the headstock.
They probably had a spare banjo, or even if they didn't, he could have played Roy's. But I think they added the fixing of the banjo string as some kind of "breaking the fourth door", like Cathy often did.
