Jasmine... I'm a designer. I've been one for nearly 30 years. (jeez). There are two bits of advice I'd like to share... the first is... as a Graphic Designer you will ALWAYS, ALWAYS being doing work on someone else's time and be paid for it... no buts. You will always be working for someone else and you will need that thick skin, because you will be given revision after revision... you'll be asked to do stupid things, things you don't agree with and things that will really piss you off... BUT you just have to suck it up and get on with it... which leads me to the second piece of wisdom... Know the difference between a Designer... and an Artist... they are not the same thing... Knowing this, will help you with the first piece of advice... My last piece is (I know I said two but this is a free bee :) You are alive on the planet for a limited number of years... remember to take a break and enjoy your life... it will go by in a flash... don't sweat the small stuff and look up from your phones from time to time... the world is better experienced through your eyes... not a screen. Im only 15 and considering this path. Since you are experienced I want to ask some questions if you dont mind answering them. How many years of training does it actually take? What qualifications do I need? What does the job actually involve? As in do you design products based on the customers needs and recieve feedback and they will pay you for it? Please give me a short description of what its actually like in the life of a graphic designer. Is the job paid based on the amount of customers or experience? And how much (if you dont mind stating)

Today, I dropped my Computer science major. I couldn't take working toward something just for the money. I logged out of my account, and walked out. I haven't felt so relieved in my life to be on a path that I enjoy. I have always loved art and design, and now I'm going to do it! Life's too short.

Ever since I was younger, I’ve been intrigued by design. I’ve always admired work on labels, magazines, commercials, etc. When I graduated high school in 2014, my dad asked me what I wanted to do. I told him I would really like to go into graphic designing as I’ve always been very creative & always looking for something work on. He completely shot my idea down. Told me I’d be eating pb&j for the rest of my life if I picked a bullshit career like. I grew up working in my dads car lot + managing his rental houses etc so I think he just wanted me to follow after him. Fast forward 4 years later (2018) I have a 7 month old baby & she’s really motivated me to go back to school for graphic design & chase my dreams. I’m enrolling next year. Thanks for this vid.

You don't need to know how to draw to be a graphic designer. It helps with certain aspects but it's not necessary.

I'm on the opposite end of the creative spectrum. My job as a writer is to take the visual and render it into something verbally appealing. It's cool to hear you talk about this side of the biz. Especially because writing and designing can often go hand in hand. Loved this video, Jasmine! (Revisions suck for writers too btw)

Hi! I know this is an old comment but the thing is, I'm in a design major right now yet I really have a passion for writing. And I feel like if people ask me what I truly want to do for the rest of my life, it's to write, and not design. I'm sort of in a dilemma about these two things but I was fascinated that you said "writing and designing can often go hand in hand." In what ways would that be? Mind giving a little professional advice maybe for my situation?

In the Taco Bell creative department, we have a few copy writers that we’ve hired. They come up with creative headlines and body copy for the designers to use. I’m not sure what kind of writer you are but maybe that might interest you?

I remember watching this video after being offered my first GD full-time job with little experience, a little over a year and a half ago. It's funny how much you can grow in a year but the best thing I've learned is a blessing and a curse. You'll probably never stop growing, you'll probably never be good enough, you could always be better.

So much great information and absolutely love your personality. I didn't get bored and was intrigued through the whole video. I have struggled with finding my career. I've changed my career so many times from nursing, dental hygiene, personal trainer, group fitness instructor, and nutritionist. Currently certified as an electronic imaging artist at a vocational school and am in college studying multi-media. My school requires to take the whole umbrella term instead of just graphic design and printing. I currently am starting a small business to create personal business cards and logos. I have successfully created a layout for a pamphlet for drivers Ed. Graphic design is the best choice that I have ever made. Take every cretic that is given!! It helps so much

*finger snapping* Wow. I had almost every single sucky experience you had starting out. Especially when your working in a windowless room, I was fortunate to do some package design for a company in a storage room with the AC on during the winter, alone, separated from the rest of asian staff. It was a soul sucking experience, and the demands they had never matched the pay. Preach!

i'm currently taking a software developer coding class and honestly- its hitting me that it's nothing like what i truly am. i'm creative and like to express myself through art, and making. i have a few days to drop out of the course and decide what's next. i've always heard about graphic designers and thought that it required for me to be an amazing artist- but i think now, it might be graphic design for me. thank you for explaining this so well.

My parents are in the science/medical field, so I never had much exposure to art as a career, but your video helped me SO much! I've always loved Art, loved style, and loved creating. I paint, Act, sing, write..ect. But, how do I know if I am artistic ENOUGH and Creative ENOUGH to be a successful Graphic Designer? University is EXPENSIVE and student loans will be the death of our generation so it's important to know before jumping into that debt pool. I know i need to get a bachelors degree in order to make ANY kind of liveable wage, ESPECIALLY in California, and trust me this is true, I'm 30 years old now and finally realizing this. So It is time to go back to school. Also, i believe u said u went to A.A.I. ? Would you recommend that over a bachelors program at a university?

Thanks for sharing your story, always interesting and inspirational listening to other graphic designers stories. Your different job journeys sound similar to mine haha, I too had my fair share of working for a small company and racial divisions. I recently left my other job that offered me to work from home, which is every designer's dream but unfortunately, the stuff I had to design just didn't sit well with me and I ended up having sleepless nights. So at the moment, I'm freelancing which is risky but I am getting clients at the moment which is truly a blessing on its own haha. I do hope other graphic designers out there looking at this video will find it very useful :)

Here in the Netherlands when you're in art school you have 5-month internships every school year (or at least at my school) which basically comes down to learning more in 5 months internship than 1,5 year school. Internships are amazing!

I want to be a Creative Director of an Ad Agency. So I was thinking my career is going to be like: Graphic Designer -> Junior Art Director -> Art Director -> Associate Creative Director -> Creative Director.

Adrian, if your end goal is Creative Director at an Ad agency, make sure you include photography, creative writing and concept driven marketing into your developing skill set. Graphic Design will get you a long way but the creative director role will require many things that design school will not prepare you for.

Hey! I know this is an old comment but what was your experience going to art institute? A lot of the schools, including the one in my area, are closing and I hear so much negative feedback from prior students that I’m scared to attend since it kind of feels “scammy”. At least that’s what so many prior students tell me.

Wow loved this video!!! Your set up is so pretty!! I’m a student at the University of Kentucky and I’m minoring in what we call ‘Digital Media Design’ which is pretty much graphic design!! I looooove it!!! It’s so amazing but it’s also sooo tedious!!! I get so frustrated so easily but when you finally finish a project it’s so satisfying!! I love photoshop, illustrator, dream weaver and everything else adobe cloud! It is SO HARD, but so worth it

It’s been ingrained in my mind for 14 years that I was going to become a doctor when I was older (yes, Asian parents) but only recently my dad has come to the idea that I will be the one having to work that job for the rest of my life so I should be able to chose and now I’m in a rut because I don’t have a clue what I want to do. I’m so indecisive, one day I want to be a detective the next I want to be a teacher and the next I want to be a interior designer. My mind is all over the place and I’m clueless as to what to do with my life

Love this video jasmine, I for once was a Computer Science Graduate though my heart was really in Multimedia Arts. Sadly back in my college days there weren't enough schools who offers Multimedia or Graphic Design. If there is, it's really too expensive. I'm blessed that there are short courses which I enrolled and I started from there. So far I'm still striving to follow my dream as a Multimedia artist!

i kept seeing your vid popping up but was nervous to watch it. im glad i did tho! im a junior gd major and im pretty nervous about going out into the field but your video was really helpful. idk why sometimes when i see stuff like this it just scares me cus graphic design can be intimidating. sometimes i get overwhelmed and im like holy shit why did i chose this as my major, but i do love it. & with all the great work out there its like how could i ever that good? anyway- really liked your video. &your job at taco bell sounds awesome!

+rachael repko I was really nervous too! I was nervous about going to college, nervous about internships, nervous about getting a job and actually working somewhere! I always thought I wasn't good enough but realized everyone is in the same boat at school, I'll learn what I need to learn from an internship, and if they picked me for a job, it's because they see something in me/my work that the liked and I should just keep doing my thing! I almost didn't apply to Taco Bell because I thought I wasn't good enough for it. But you never know until you try! As long as you love it, that's all that matters :)

this has helped me so much. I am a 16 year old girl from the uk and as a child I have always been set on being a paramedic because I wanted to help people but I have always had a natural flare for creativity and art subjects which I have always ignored. recently my granny asked me to design her a poster for a charity coffee morning and it was one of the best things ive done I a while, I got so into it and it really let me release my creativity. I started to rethink what I wanted to do after leaving high school and this video has really helped me as I think I do want to become a graphic designer.

When I'm older I either want to be an art director or a graphic designer I'm only in 8th grade the classes that I want to take is Art , photography, and web design are those good classes for the art field ?

I wish I could have started as early as you! Those classes are great, but your don't have to wait. Get the Adobe software, like Illustrator and InDesign and start playing around. Watch tutorials or if you want a hands-on approach, just start designing. Find some existing work and redesign it for practice or look for opportunities around your school. Don't worry about your style. Your style will develop on its own. Basically, get a hold of the software and play. You've got an early advantage. If you keep practicing, you'll be way better than your competition. Right now, learn everything you can. If you want some inspiration, look at Behance or Dribble or subscribe to some design magazines. Don't get intimidated by their skill. Just study why their work is good and use that learning to inform your own work. Graphic design is a visual language. It's about message-making. If you see it that way, you'll begin to see what designs work and what doesn't.

Katiembeauty If you're looking to get some web design experience I'd suggest downloading Notepad ++. Its basically a free alternative to using Adobe Dreamweaver that allows you to write code and design pages.

+James Peabody the business side IS important but I feel like someone should learn the basics of design as well as the business stuff. Any "halfbrained monkey" can "design" but real companies and serious clients will recognize TALENT in comparison to someone who calls themselves designers when all they know is how to operate a computer. Also, as a designer, you should know that not everyone can design well. Good designers have an eye for it and not just anyone can do what we do well just because they have a laptop and some Adobe programs. As for the first question, photography skills do come in handy for product photography (most common use of photography I've seen in the field). Companies will usually hire photographers for advanced shoots. And web design can be a part of graphic design. If you do web design, it will most likely be linked to app design (both would be considered UI or user interface design). But UI design is just a category under graphic design like package design and typography. Depending on your classes you'd learn that in school. Also, you'll take a business class when you major in graphic design in college. So you'll learn how to design AND how to run your own design business 👍🏻

I loved watching this video! I'm an aspiring graphic designer myself, and it's always nice to see how people my age do it in the work field and deal with different aspects of the job. Taking critique is definitely something I have to work on once I graduate, but I don't mind working on it. Also, it's really nice that you and Leo are both designers! Character design would be related to animation. You can create characters in graphic design but if you want to focus on character design specifically, go into animation.
