I wanted to create this short video to really emphasize that grass-fed beef is not the same as grass-finished beef. Grass-finished beef vs. grass-fed beef (grain-finished beef) Grass-finished beef:
• 0 grains
• All grass
• Takes 30 months Grain-finished beef:
• 150 days GMO grains
• Takes between 10-14 months
• Digestive gas (10x more acid in their intestines and less fermentation)
Just because something says it’s grass-fed does not mean it’s grass-finished. If it doesn’t say it’s grass-finished, then it’s grain-finished. Organic also does not mean grass-fed or grass-finished.
Organic means:
• No pesticides
• No hormones
• No antibiotics

If you live in the UK like me, the farms don’t advertise grass finished. Instead they advertise as ‘100% grass fed’ or ‘100% pasture fed’, this is grass finished so don’t worry.

And there is a labelling loophole. Maize is considered a plant of the grass family and is legally labelled as grass-fed. They grind up the old dried-up corn stalks into a mulch, which often turns moldy from the enviroment because it is stored in giant containers that aren't water proof (rain).

Okay, so this leads me to some questions: 1) is grass-fed beef that's not grass finished any different/better ultimately than not grass-fed beef? 2) does grass-fed beef still mean, however, that the cows were treated humanely (pasture raised)? 3) is organic beef better than grass-fed (if grass finished is not signified)? 4) will grass-finished beef always say it is such on the package? Thank you so much, Dr. Berg! You are such a trail-blazing superstar! Love and light to you and yours!

As a cow calf farmer I need to correct your conclusions, beef breeds will reach 1200 to 1500 lbs live by 12 to 16 months of age. The average beef calf spends the first 205 days of its life on pasture with the cow.(grass)Normally it is just the last 6 to 10 weeks that grain (barley in Canada,corn in US) is included in the animals diet in order to marble the fat through the meat. Dairy breeds are quiet different in that no matter how much grain they are fed the meat marbles very little, in fact like some humans the fat from grains accumulates in the organs and inner body cavity, for this reason they can take longer to finish, and do get the distinction of being called grass fed finish, at an older age. I do share your concerns with modern agriculture, however it is at least disingenuous to suggest that there is a way of avoiding, GMO, herbicides, insecticides, or any of the poisons your neighbouring farmer is using.

Good choice of breeds, bred for beef. Cattle unlike humans are ruminants and can readily digest grass and grass seeds. The point I was trying to make, a barb wire fence will not stop Bees from spreading GMO s to your crops or antibiotic resistant disease.@@reneeodayok859

I had thought about this grass fed/grass finished issue the same way as described here. One local seller of grass fed beef told me that the USDA requires them to be fed grass totally, from birth to butcher with NO GRAINS whatsoever in their diets and they have a way to test the meat to be certain that the standard has been upheld. The younger couple who had purchased the farm three years before I spoke with them at the local farmer's market, told me that this had been their instruction in order to pass that hurdle to get USDA certification. So apparently USDA grass fed does mean grass finished as well. Who knew? I'm not sure I trust our government to maintain those standards where there is BIG business involved. I suspect very large companies get by with things that aren't "kosher", so to speak. My trust is shattered thanks to finding out the unethical things that have gone on with the FDA and Monsanto, etc. I still shy away from 'grass fed' if it is a big corporate brand, even if it has the USDA certification. But if you find local farmers that are selling grass fed beef that don't add the grass finished to their labels, but do have the USDA certification, I would trust that. Plus you can ask them directly as opposed to large corporations. I also had asked them if they sold organic produce as well. They explained that while they did grow their crops organically, they could not get the USDA certification for organic-ness :) until the land had been free of any chemicals for 5 years. I thought that was interesting to note also.

If local farmers don’t label their meat as grass-finished so that means it is not grass-finished. As simple as that.
@aptwalker2009
@aptwalker2009 7 месяцев назад
@@danielbroomhall8882 If they are labeled grass fed and have the USDA license they are grass finished because that is the USDA requirement. If they are not licensed through the USDA then it's anyone's guess as to what has really gone on. But two of our local farmers that I've met at farmers markets have told me the same requirements, independently, and also told me that they get spot inspections from USDA representatives to make sure that there are no feed lots present and that the only food source is pasture grass or hay. So the Wisconsin reps working under the USDA are serious about the restrictions. Oh, and the label is for USDA grass fed, probably because that is the most commonly recognized name. Most people wouldn't have a clue what grass finished meant if they weren't into following keto and other healthy food lifestyles is concerned. If it's not USDA approved then grass fed most likely means most of their lives have been corn and grain fed.

Farmer here..the term "grass fed" is no longer regulated, so some companies that label their meat grass fed literally mean they were fed grain/traditional feed ON THE GRASS. Could be even fake grass because it is not a term like "certified organic" which is a legal term. I encourage everyone to reach out to your local farmers and buy fresh meat from them, as you will be able to learn straight from the source just how their animals are raised.

This varies greatly between countries. The use of gmos and hormones, also how the cows and other ruminants are fed by default. So you basically need to research how your own country does its farming and where your meat comes from. Or just go to a local farmers market and speak to your farmer, the quality will be better no matter.

So after a year of researching grain finished vs grass finished I’ve decided to go back to grain finished and here is why. First the increase in omega 3 fatty acid in grass finished are insignificant to what I can get in a can of sardines. Grass finished has a much “gamier” flavor to it. I like it but my wife did not. The price on grass finished is substantially more compared to grain finished. I can get an organically raised side of beef locally that is grain finished. To me it’s just not worth it to focus on getting grass finished.

Thank you Dr berg for all health education, I will be starting grass finished meat soon! I have a question about pasture raised vs organic pasture raised. Are they different? I eat eggs from vital farm, it is pasture raised but there is an organic version, and I wonder if the extra $2 is worth it or am I just paying for the organic label?

I saw a video with a farmer and he said you can always tell grass fed beef, the fat looks yellow'ish. Grain fed beef has white fat.

I wonder same (in case for men)....But just curious to ask why would you decrase amount of iron by some certain food? (Because I was thinking that women usually end up being low in iron than men while men tends to be high)

Dr. Berg, please invite Dr. Peter Ballerstedt on your program for an interview. He is a forage agronomist and is one of the foremost authorities on ruminant husbandry. He offers a different perspective on the whole grass-fed vs grass finished beef debate, and he has done pretty informative talks on a lot of the misconceptions surrounding grass-fed vs grass finished beef. In the interest of being fair and balanced, I hope you will invite him on your program. Thank you.

I just wrote an alarming article saying that even if companies claim that they are grass fed, grass finished, organic etc. it doesn’t mean that they actually meet those standards. I usually get my meat which is grass finished from New Zealand and now I’m wondering if what they’re claiming is true..? If anybody has any information other than this please let me know I would really appreciate it!

I have 81 days of IF, OMAD, sport, no sugar, no bad carbs, absolutely clean keto and I've lost 17kg. But I can't explain why I have these alcohol cravings and I couldn't find anything about it.. I want to mention that I don't drink. Only occasionally a bit of wine, not too much. Thank you!! I really hope you can see my comment xx I watched all your videos.

Good overall video. Just one point to assist people watching: the black and white cattle in the video are Holstein dairy cattle, they will not finish well on an all grass diet. Genetics of your cattle is an extremely important aspect of producing quality grass fed beef. Even the typical beef animal is not designed for finishing on grass, even in 30 months. I know that wasn’t your goal in the video but just a point I thought needed mentioned since consistency of product is a major issue in this small segment of the beef industry.

I can find lots of suppliers of grass finished beef locally and have a regular go to supplier at the local farmers market - I never checked whether it was organic or not though. The biggest problem I have is finding organic free range pasture raised poultry. I can find a lot of “free-range” chicken at organic butchers but it is not pasture raised. Ironically I have no problem with regards to finding organic eggs from pasture raised chickens. Is it just me or am I being a bit too pedantic in trying to find pasture raised organic free-range chicken? Same goes for pork, the food labels in the supermarkets for ‘free-range’ seem to take on many different meanings?

What to do if you live in a country where they don't even put labels Grass Fed , Grass Finished , Organic, Pasture Raised and so on ? Im trying to do everything I learned on this channel but that's my main concern and its a lot discouraging. I feel like my progress is not gonna be good because I cant pick the better meat.

Organic does NOT mean no pesticides, it just means no synthetic pesticides, they still use "natural" pesticides. The organic pesticides are often more harmful than the synthetic ones, that's why most farms have switched to synthetic. It also does NOT mean no antibiotics, it only means no routine antibiotics (given regularly).
