Thanks for taking time to do this. Ive been experimenting with grass seeds myself. Personally I didn’t notice better results with Scotts products, but what i noticed is that making sure your soil PH is good and Aerating your lawn helps any type of grass grow better.
@JealousLawnCare
@JealousLawnCare 5 лет назад
Boti Bartha -- yes it's hard to tell much difference but Scott's seeds are supposed to do better with less watering vs others which aren't coated. But with seed I'm constantly watering, so no need there. Heh Yes definitely annual aeration and seeding is a great practice to do and definitely checking ph and other macro nutrients every few years!

I like to have a mixture of top soil, peat Moss and humus. As a soil mixture, I also use a starter fertilizer for sun and shade seeds. But watering is the key
@JealousLawnCare
@JealousLawnCare 4 года назад
Elsie Kimmel -- i haven't experimented much with peat moss to be honest, it's on my to do list though. People who use it really do swear by it though! Good recipe for success!
@waynesmith6522
@waynesmith6522 5 лет назад
Another good way to seed a area.(with somewhat of a hole) Is to add top soil 75-80%, then on that add a mix of topsoil, peat moss, and grass seed. Peat moss is good for air,water flow and makes it easier for roots to grow down in the dirt. (No hole hardish soil)Use a garden weasel(rotory cultivator) to loosen the soil really good then just add the seed,peat and soil mix. Most people dont water correctly around my area. People with sprinklers over water and float the seed down the road, or dont have sprinklers and only water after work and the seed has been fried by the sun. A little extra peat moss can add shade or help hold the seed on a slightly more hilly area.
@JealousLawnCare

Every sod lay I have done (myself, solo) - from small sections to 1,000 sq feet, have all been a stunning success. owner was told to water twice a day and miracle grow crystals were dissolved and sprayed on newly laid sod with great effect. ALSO, the area needs to be cut out as you did in your seed example plot. The new sod needs to be laid flush with existing surrounding sod lay. If you don't want to prepare your plot first before laying sod pieces, then don't waste your time. Most ppl are OK with a Spanish speaker gang rushing up, dropping the sod pieces - sans prep - and then running away with a cash payment. Stupid is what stupid does.

You should have a local nursery that provides seed for your area... I've never had luck with any big box store. We have "grass pad" in Missouri.

This makes me want to rip up my whole lawn and reseed but really overseed for maximum thickness. Lawn is pretty green and weed free, it’s just really thin in certain spots and not quite level. I can never get seed to match color, and type of grass wise. Reseeding would allow me to fix both those issues although it would be a LOT of effort.

KBG takes way longer to grow compared to the other seeds. It's also a much smaller seed. Once it's up the rhizomes will fill in bare spots. That's something Fescue won't do. This is why most mixes that contain KBG has rye grass with it. If you seed with 100% KBG you will be waiting a long time before it's actually established.
@JealousLawnCare

Jealous Lawn Care, Black Beauty has a ver high germination rate, good resistance to drought and diseases and an exceptional root system which helps it maintain a beautiful color and overall health with reduced fertilization. I live in South Carolina where most of the lawns are Bermuda or similar warm season grasses. Black Beauty stands up to the higher temperatures and lower rainfall.

Your comment about how the heavy seeded area looks great is not really true. Yes. It looks ok right now. But when it matures in a couple of years you will end up with clumps of grass resembling weeds!! Installing a KBG lawn require 2-3 years. Because it needs to spread out underground for that long before it looks full. Most people don't have the patience for this. Everyone wants great looking full grass in 2 weeks. Which is why KBG typically comes with RYE in it. RYE grass grows in 8 days. Making those impatient humans happy. But RYE is not hardy enough in many areas to last very long. If you want a full looking lawn in a hurry and don't care how long it lasts. Put down all RYE seeds and it will grow super fast. But my advice is to use a KGB mix with very little RYE and/or fescue. And NEVER put down too much seed. Then give it at least 2 years to fill in. Great lawns don't happen in weeks. They happen in years.
@JealousLawnCare
@JealousLawnCare 5 лет назад
Scott Ayers -- good info here, thank you! However I have not experienced any clumping or issues from heavy handing seed in the past. I will keep an eye on this test area shown in this video. It's been almost a year and currently no issues. I'll let you know what I find if issues pop up!
@ScottAyersStuff

@@JealousLawnCare IMO. It's already very clumpy looking in your video. It looks like a type of weed we get here in the NE. But if you like it that's all that matters. Different strokes for different folks. ;-) But for people who are more picky and want a more even lawn. It's important not to put down too much seed like that. Cheers!

In my back yard is shade I'm try Scots sun shade after I mix some fertilizer in. An contractor's rebuilt are garage and store up lawn they hired an Rookie to grow grass they just threw top soil over compacted soil and then threw seed on top of new soil in 80° weather without water or back raking the seeds. I backed rake the seeds and water them I got little more grass than I thought it be but not full kind of patching.
@ScottAyersStuff
@ScottAyersStuff 5 лет назад
@@louishollandjr You don't say where you live. I'm in upstate NY. And one thing I learned the hard way is that the time of year you seed is just as important as the type of seed(maybe even more so). In my area. If it's in the 80's every day then putting down seed is a waste of time, money, and effort. Because the grass grows too slow and the weeds will push out the new grass seeds. It needs to be in the low 70s here to grow grass properly. That means seeds should only go down in very early spring and very early fall(around September 1st). Last year we had a brand new lawn installed in mid May. It came up pretty nice. Then July & August rolled in with constant 90 degree sunny days. And killed all of the new grass!!! I got the lawn re-seeded again in September for free last year. And this spring its gorgeous. So I learned an important lesson. Never, ever, seed before September 1st in my area. Not even in early spring. Because summer sun here kills new grass like a laser beam. A lot of people here get caught in that trap. They go to Home Depot in the summer and by seeds. And all they grow is weeds. And don't know why. You will need to figure out what time of year your area is best for growing grass the best. Every area has one small window of time where it works the best. I can guarantee you that if you plant seeds in only that sweet spot time of year wherever you live. You'll have much better luck.

Is SCOTTS one of your Sponsors? Why Just that Brand? Vs Lower Cost Brands of the Sun Shade Mix( Proven the better than Straight KBlue only) so while showSoctts S&S mix bests its own other Types, we need to see Other Brands say 5-6 lower cost brand S&S Mix? Otherwise? Just call in True Green Contractor and let them do it( or is that the goal for this? Do they sponsor you as well?

I'm about 65-70% filled in...I threw down more seed just last week...hoping and praying! It takes sometimes up to 4 weeks for centipede to germinate.
