Very good show from one of the (many) peak stretches in Dead history. What made '87 such a great year was, first and foremost of course, Garcia being healthy and relatively sober. The tidal wave of energy following the release of "In the Dark" and the success of that record. The enormous amount of material they now had being around for 20+ years and having the same line up for the past 8+ years. '87 has always been one of my favorite periods in the bands illustrious history.

God bless the Dead and all of us who have been there, at one time or another- 52 shows myself, well, the song is not over for me...2/1/15 and everyday is part of the same song that will not ever end! I met Jerry once, and asked him about what he will take from all this, in retrospect, and he said "I haven't the foggiest idea sofar, because each time I play, its as if I have never done anything like this before- but really, I would only be glad to have done it, besides, why was I doing it anyways?" Well, we shook hands and he said "By the way, thank you the question". I could only smile and take pictures, which are among my most valued possessions to this day.
@wiggityp

Brian Sternett That is a badass anecdote man. I really like hearing about Jerry through these sorts of personal recollections. The fact that he said "By the way, thank you for the question." is to me amazing, a sort of confirmation in words of the vibes we get through his music. I bet those pics you got are great. Definitely sounds like an experience to treasure. Thanks for sharing!

Travis Crum I totally agree with you on that one ! Completely agree with you. My Brother Esau was wrongly maligned, consistently. One too many biblical allegories perhaps ? I don't know. But I think Esau was one of Weir's best compositions, right up there with Estimated and BT Wind. Esau totally peaked in the summer of 1987. This Shoreline version was great, but I think the best versions are from Oakland Stadium 7-24-87, or one month later at Angel's Camp 8-22-87. Look 'em up and check 'em out !

Ever since they decided to silence conservative voices, and medical voices deemed fringe, and we left and created a parallel economy, and started Rumble app and destroyed RU-vid... now they are right in your grill with typical tactics of a loser. 3 to 5x as many ads, even if you demonatize vids they run them. I am pretty sure I went to this show... of course it was a while ago. Smokin show... anyone else remember any of this? I recall Bill Graham was out in the parking lot on horseback talking to the kids... something about some counterfeit tix. I met some really cool dudes from LA, gave them a ride, I'd just flown in from Guam. At the show they had this giant music contraption thingy made up of a bunch of old pianos nailed together, open string. So it was this huge musical instrument a bunch of hippies would dance around and bang on... pretty tripy and super fun during the drums.
@anthonyphillips533
@anthonyphillips533 9 лет назад
Tom Galey I remember that too, this was the GD's first run at Shoreline and was met with a major resurgence in counterfeit tickets, partly because of the popularity that ensued with In The Dark. Took forever to get through the gates that night, then heard about all the counterfeit tickets people were busted with.

Oh wow, suddenly realized this was back when i was living in Mill Valley, the day of this show, in the organic foods store, standing next to me is Bob Weir, getting avocodos or such. Politely I let him shop in peace. But then when he turned up again, behind me in the checkout line, had to smile and ask "So, are you guys going to rock tonight?" "Yup" he drawled. Viola this show above. I noticed out front that he was driving the same SAAB model as my dad, which I though an excellent choice.

Wow really good show, really high energy and you can really see Jerry and Brent connect musically. On a side note the mixdown for this who is really spot on. Phil is really present, must be the work of Dan Healy years but I'd have to look that one up I didn't see the band until the 90's. Thanks for posting another gem! They should release this one in my opinion!
@louisbyron
@louisbyron 7 лет назад
You are spot on. From about '82 to maybe 1991, Healy did the full in-house mix and was generally in charge of the design and implementation of the in-house audio system. In my opinion, this era, especially '82-'88, was consistently the best sound for the band as far as overall quality of sound reproduction & spaciality and separation of the instruments and voices. After 1988, even before Healy left, they began to "digitize" their sound a lot more as well as running most of the instruments through more signal processing & compression (which led to a "muddy" sound in my opinion).

Fun shows. Killer early Pocky Way with Brent hitting the B3 instead of the cheesy keyboard. Ripping first set most of the way through, obviously some songs are missing here. This Candyman is amazing with Garcia maxing out the "underwater cathedral" reverb, it's my favorite version out of the ones I saw. And the Maggies Farm > Cumberland is perfectly executed and live in the moment was maybe the single greatest dance party experience of my many shows - the place just exploded in a vortex of swirling dancers. Good times at the Dump. Funny to think how much the deadhead consensus group-mind hated this venue at the time given that it's now beloved in memory. Everyone was just grumpy it wasn't the Greek or Frost.

Twas there, umm some1 probably said this but did this really end with Esau? Anyways according to my memory....I have no idea at all. I was there with a Cass and another person, such as Just In time B who also got to Syracuse only for the revolution encore cause he thought the show was in Binghampton. He does that all the time, or did when the Dead were here monthly like in 1979. He is probably still wandering around in the woods at saratoga thinking its 1985, looking for the blue tent and the silver Toyota Corolla. If they play there tis year and u see an old homeless person, ask him if he is looking for me. Thanks, and dont even try to sell him any stickers like during the Stranger Eyes, or shoot him. That just makes him angrier......and to the people wondering if Esau is a good song or not, I Know a Town named Ba Vi that u can..............................die in. Its NOT in east LA, and they didn't sell condos when they were there. But u may get hit by a swinging 1000 pound primitive swinging weapon that can take the heads off f a group of Tubaabs anytime, anyday. Pick your paddy. Ask anyone at a show in 2015, and they indeed will not know anything about it. But it is completely true. Ask Bob. He wasnt there, but may have done a bike trip there in 1998 as a "Conservationist." They thought they w anted a conversationalist, so he went. He was like Some say I am, some say I aint. They setlled on him being both.

Tried to smuggle a fifth of Bacardi 151 rum in, got busted at the gate so the guards say dump it. No way, it was full so i jugged it down and on my way I went into the show with a gallon jug of water. I told my buddies to watch me because I had feeling the 151 would kick in soon. It did, I stood at the beginning part of the what can be considered the lawn ;) all night, didn’t move and sad to say dumped my water so I could piss in the bottle. On the way out after the show we missed the train so we started to walk. Stumbled upon a Carl’s Junior so we walked up to the drive through to order only to be told we needed to be in a car. Man, I wanted a burger. So off we go and low and behold a supermarket. We go in and look for something tasty, took us about 20 min to find the right thing to chow down. After all of this guess what I got to eat? A pre made salad from the deli and we ate on the sidewalk. 😳🤓. How we got to the hotel will never be known. Peace.

My first dead show. I was a junior in highschool. Can't believe my parents let me go on a school night. My dad was an in the closet dead fan. I took some sunshine with my girlfriend. Such a great night! It took us about 3 hours to find her parents van after the show. That parking lot was huge and we never thought to pay attention where we parked. I got home around 3 am.. my parents let me slide!

Holy shit. Just stumbled onto this. I was at this show and nearly lost the plot because of the mushrooms. The friend I was with was in some dark cavern on Neptune and was no help at all. Didn't remember the show being this good. Great to hear it a second time.

Sadly ...they weren't too fond of Brent. His drug addiction was too much for the band. Even tho Jerry's addiction was terrible. How do I know? I lived next to their ticket salesman...and dammit. A memory just came to me. Back then, I had my hands on a bunch of unsold tickets because Steve had no use for them and idiot me...tossed them out. I am an idiot. Idiot!!!!!

This is incredible! Sound and picture is unreal. Where did the vid footage come from (if you don't mind me asking?) This was early in my journey with the Dead. This was the start of my senior year in high school which was just down the street. There was a real spark in the Bay back then, and the GD entering the last great period of their career. Great time to be in the Bay Area. The Giants were on a tear, the great 49er era, and the GD was the soundtrack to it all. Definitely killer. Thanks for putting this out.

We "slept in" an orchard down the street that night (10-3-87) after losing our people. Hungry in the A.M. some folks in a school bus gave us a can of veggie chili... found an opener and ate it cold with warm beer...awesome. "Now what do we do all day?".

berg12205 I agree with that. The thing I really like is how the band lets it stay here. Anything that isn't here or has been deleted was done by some corporate record industry master of greed.

Thanks so much to Voodoonola2 for all these great Dead videos. Wonderful sound comes through in his editing. I consider the early-mid 80's (with Healy fully in charge after Betty Cantor left) the era of the best overall audio reinforcement for the band. Crisp, lively, with excellent sense of space and seperation for all instruments & voices (with particular emphasis on bringing out the very low and very high tones...notice how "punchy" & alive Phil's bass sounds). By the time of the beginning of Jerry's demise (1990 or 91) in terms of playing ability, their sound reinforcement had become totally "digitized" with no real sound reinforcement or monitors on stage. They also started to run all the instruments through tons of digital processing and compression that severely muddied their sound. Nothing Lasts (but that's OK). RIP Jerry Garcia. RIP The Grateful Dead.
