Glad people are starting to post more of these 95 shows. I wish the soundboards would get released I can't believe how many of those are not available in the archive for so many of these shows. What's the deal with that? Thanks whoever dug this weird-ass VHS Source up and posted it. There should be soundboards and there's also video of every single summer 1995 show but I imagine they're all in some cardboard box somewhere LOL

Jason Patrick Callahan (aka as “Jason Doe” or “The Grateful Doe”), he was at this concert on June 24, and 25, 1995. Sadly he got killed in car accident at Greensville County, Virginia on June 26, 1995. Jason was only 19 years old, He didn’t have any identification on him and remained as a Jason Doe (and Grateful Doe) for 20 years, until on January of 2015, he was recognized on Facebook from a woman from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, which was his mother (Margaretta Evans). Margaretta said she hasn’t heard from Jason since June 1, 1995, ‘cus he went to follow Grateful Dead. On December 9, 2015, DNA testing results came back and was a match, Jason was Jason Doe (or Grateful Doe) and finally got his name back. On August 9, 1995, almost two months after Jason was killed, Jerry Garcia (from Grateful Dead) past away at the age of 53.

I was there too. It was only the second and last show I got to see of them. Apparently it was one of the best put on by them in their later years according to some dead head friends of mine. There was that huge thunder storm that dumped rain on us until we collectively hid under an overpass on the side of the parking lot. I remember someone(s) getting hit by lightning that struck a tree near by. We had ate schrooms and as we walked up to the stadium the sun is going down and it starts to hit. When they opened with Shakedown Street the sky opens up and it starts pouring. It was magic. I was 22.

I remember I stubbed and cut my toe down on the field and we missed Bob Dylan opening because my friends were f'ing around in the parking lot (but it was like we have tickets.... Let's go!) . So I was slightly on edge (nothing had kicked in yet 😜).... Then they opened up with this and all was good in the world again. ❤️✌🏽 archive.org/details/gd95-06-25.sbd.2236.sbefail.shnf/gd95-06-25d1t04.shn

In Jerry's last few years I made an effort to catch the opening acts. They picked good ones, and there were often sit-ins. I was rewarded for this : in 93, I caught Garcia jamming with Sting, in 94, I caught Garcia, Kreutzmann & Hart sitting in with Sting, and at this RFK show I saw Jerry play with Dylan. My last show, and a damn good one !

I was supposed to go to this show. I went to RFK almost every year since my first show in 1990. I remember thinking well, it's going to be a little bit of a hassle to drive up home to Virginia for this one and I had a class I was taking at USC, I said what the hell I'll just catch them in the fall. Dumb dumb dumb. Luckily I got to see a really good spring show in Charlotte but I should have gone to this RFK show My friend was killed at that show trying to get out of the rain and climbed up a tree and got hit by lightning so that really sucks but no cell phones I probably wouldn't have known it happened till after the show, at least hopefully. Instead, I went home for Thanksgiving and we went and saw fish at Hampton Coliseum that weekend and that was a beginning of a whole new chapter of music for me. I've seen them twice proud of that and didn't think it was all that but that Hampton show and then I went out and bought a live one. Yep. That's how that all turned out.

This is all I have from RFK 95. I’ve never seen any footage from 6/24/95. But there are a couple other vids from 6/25 on RU-vid- the amateur shot of Jack A Roe is pretty good, and there is a Box of Rain > Rain set 2 opener, which IMO is too far away to really dig it.

I believe (the Dead’s vault keeper, and inheriter of Dick Latvala’s audio series) David Lemieux knows. He runs all the video stuff and the stuff in the video vault. I think, from talking with him previously, that he believes there isn’t enough good stuff, or that the best stuff is from earlier era and doesn’t want to put out much from the latter era- except one at a time in his weekly “All the Years” series on RU-vid. I think his email is vaultATdeadDOTnet (changed the Ats and Dots because I think RU-vid tries to screen out email addresses)

This was my second Dead show ever (after the one at the spectrum just before). Me and my friends were in art school in Philly at the time and one of our instructors was the hugest Deadhead and would travel and record all the shows, so we were all knee deep in the Dead at the time. We had such a blast at the first show (it was the first for a few of us), luckily we decided to travel to RFK to see them. This allowed us to also experience camping with the Dead, which was an entire experience on its own. The VW van with the 25 LB nitrous bottle was camping in the site next to us and I remember falling asleep to the PSSSSSHHHHHTTTTTTT of balloons being filled all night long. MAN, WHAT VIVID MEMORIES!!!! And then the show... with Dylan and the rain!!! We were one of the first rows under the overhang and I remember the sky just opening up. and then after that show, that was it... Book of the Dead closed. But that was quite a way to end it.

I actually like 95 better than 94. The sound of the band is dialed in. Jerry's guitar tone is best its been since 92. Drums sound like they were completely remixed and they sound tighter and more powerful than previous years. Bob has a less shrill tone .. vince has his best sound and best playing since he joined. And really, everyone freaks out about jerry's playing struggles, but the COLD truth about that is it happens WAY less than you think. In fact, i just went through the whole March/Apr run and not only does Jerry sound good and plays well more often than not, there are some actually 5 star x factor moments, especially in Atlanta. There's one omni show that has a TON of free form improv nestled into various spots, i need to check my notes but i think its night 2. Charlotte night 2 is 5 star from beginning to end and the second set is easily in my top 10 or top 15 set 2s of all time.

Seriously, wherever this came from is obviously the video of the whole show. Every summer show with videoed from top to bottom by the crew for the big screens. I heard somewhere that those videos were legally and by the venues and therefore that's why no one ever see them cuz they just get lost or whatever, whoever is in charge of the deadz archives now seems to have no interest in getting any of the 95 stuff out there and that is a shame. They probably don't want to do it without figure out a way to make people pay for it, but then nobody wants to pay for it, so there you go

In retrospect, Jerry had had EEEEEEENUFF! It really saddens me to see this. I was at the show the night before and didn't remember him just slumping over like he does for the last few minutes here. It's actually unnerving.
@matthewmaurysmith2486
@matthewmaurysmith2486 2 года назад
I don't know, he just had that slumped over stature the whole time by then. His demeanor in 95 used to shock me too, but once you get over all that you can really listen to the highs and the lows and the highs are really fun and 95 is one hell of a compelling you to listen to. Also, and he was doing this a little before the slumped over 95 phase, he was getting into this musical Thing of vamping chords and playing grooves and letting the rest of the band play around him more. I kind of Dug that approach... they had a cool sound they were evolving in 95 which was independent of Jerry's health problems, the other five members of the band were healthy and actually stepping their game up musically so when he was there you can hear that evolution. Had he not had his health problems and drug problems, 95 and 96 would have had some of the coolest group sound playing of the 90s. While there is some bad moments this is not one of them his guitar-playing here is actually pretty crisp thoughtful and inventive ...he seems to be on top of it... but whenever Hornsby was there 95 which I don't think was all that many times, he definitely seemed to get a shit together because I don't think he wanted to look bad in front of Bruce. I was at Charlotte where on a Wednesday he was basically not even playing, the next night Hornsby shows up on grand piano and it's like he totally wakes up and gets into the show. They really needed him there every night 95 and it would have been not such a bad year in peoples opinions LOL
@jpwjr1199
@jpwjr1199 2 года назад
@@matthewmaurysmith2486 Look, let's just start with we KNOW now that Jerry had neuropathy and carpal the last 18-20 months of his life. So let's put that baby to bed right now. He wasn't "getting into a new approach" or any shit like that - I used to say that, and it's bullshit. He just couldn't physically play as fluently as he once did - end of story. However, did he perk up and focus more with Hornsby? Absolutely! Because in 91' before all of his health problems really ramped up again, Hornsby lit into him during a Boston Garden intermission (opening night intermission Fall 91') and basically told him off. Jerry was a terrible addict - probably a wonderful, warm-hearted person at his core, but an awful addict. Period. And he didn't have the physical wherewithal, or luck(?), of a Bill Evans to die when he was at the height of his playing facility. He crashed and burned pretty horribly on his instrument, and that really cannot be denied any longer.
@matthewmaurysmith2486
@matthewmaurysmith2486 2 года назад
I don't think every time it was "bullshit" at all. I doubt we are talking about the same moments. I just watched this Shakedown Street and he's soling like a champ at the beginning of the jam and then at the end he gets into a whole chord vamping section at the end. And that's what I'm talking about and he was doing that deliberately not cuz he couldn't play and it was a kind of a style saying that he was doing and I saw him do it with Jerry band can't remember the song it might have been 93... And yes he had carpal tunnel and there are times when he's playing and it's not good and that sounds like so what's going on. Not really sure what your angle is or who you arguing with. There might be moments where it's "saddening" to see Jerry but this Shakedown and maybe even the show isn't really one of them
@jpwjr1199
@jpwjr1199 2 года назад
@@matthewmaurysmith2486 First off, you replied to my comment, not the other way around. If you honestly think he's "soloing his ass off" here, then you need to listen to better versions of the song with Jerry on it. Look, you think whatever you want- I was still going to shows in 95' not saying I didn't, and I did enjoy the RFK shows by and large, but this is Garcia struggling. Any rose-colored version of it is just that. I'll say Hornsby sounds pretty darn good at around 11:53 or so, but Garcia can no longer respond effectively. He's not comping chords because he's trying something out. He's comping because he can no longer feel his hands and fill the melodic role in that band the way he did for a long time. He. had. neuropathy!!! Look that up and get back to me.

Yeah He always looks like that in 95. Hair turned totally white, voice smooth and eerily pure, that nasal sound of hes on heroin ma"am, and his whole body just slumped over and weird looking. But, he was dying, totally had diabetes and wouldn't do a thing about it, probably had heart attacks on and off all the time. In an odd way the heroin might have kept him alive a little longer he was such a mess. In retrospect it's actually amazing that he made it through the tour, did not die on stage, and ended up dying peacefully in his sleep in a place near property that may as well have been somewhere like home to him. Lucky guy in many ways. Everyone trashes 95 but in reality about 60 to 70% of it is him playing just fine. Everyone just freaks out about the 20 or 30% of him flubbing it up guitar wise or lyric wise. But he also did things like absolutely kill days between or Visions of Johanna. Once you get over that there's a lot of like always say heroic moments and again, the other five guys were just fine health-wise and musically, the band was still continuing to evolve and when he got it together they were pretty fucking awesome all the way to the end in my opinion
