jerry plays with so much passion. u felt like u knew him through the music he played. there will never be another jerry garcia. he was definitely a special gift sent from heaven
“ you felt like you knew him through his music “ Ok. That’s the way I feel know other soloists Frampton, Coletrane, Zappa. SRV I am a soloist myself, so I’m aware of other ( good ones)
I followed them when I was 19 on their last tour......I saw 9 shows...It changed my life for the better...I will never forget those days...best times known to man in this life...I miss you Jerry
I remember sneaking into Winterland this night, the closing, NRPS, Blues Brothers, Dead. Back when acid was not only good it was still great. Fantastic show, I will never forget it, breakfast at dawn. Afterwards we went back up to the roof for a champagne toast to the ol place, home away from home, Winterland. Gone but never forgotten.
I never "got" the dead like my friends did. I always thought , their vocals aren't tight and they weren't as energetic or flashy. But I am wiser now. This is a whopping 2 chord song, but look what Jerry does in the in-betweens. They are a jam band. Like the Allman Brothers, don't ever expect to see a scripted show or hear the the same phrasings twice. They were an "experimental group and weren't afraid to try new stuff and ways of presenting material and not afraid to fail
All these years, I always thought of them as just a curt band, with not much talent. Well, I've been awakened this summer, and finally am appreciating what a gem they really were. Glad I didn't wait too much longer.
I miss the dead, this is one of my top 5 songs from the dead. Its amazing how you can get in such a relaxing mood listening to jerry thxs for posting the song/video a big fan from NJ...FIRE FIRE ON THE MNT....
Oh my gosh sure. So agree and it’s my favorite song. Oh to be so unique and talented. We sure miss a lot of good ones. In Heaven he can play again for me
Gene, those were such good days. And i hate to admit it, but when he died, what the Dead movement was trying to do was still in its infancy died with Jerry. The first time i came to a Dead show, maybe i won some tickets over the phone, i don't remember. I had a very scary situation because i lost my car, and i was not even on hallucinogens yet!but in the midst of it, the dead community pulled through for me. I was never alone. And that is the single most important thing to me among them. I was never alone despite how lonely i may have felt at any given moment. I had to renew myself, and this song was it letting go of that stress and taking a new perspective. I miss Jerry so much, and the fact that in that day, whatever my political or religious belief, i could be judged as a fellow human being, with a different opinion, instead of as a criminal.
this is so good that I can replay the song five times in a little over an hour and not get tired of it. I just did that because it's such a good song by an awesome band. Jerry Garcia was good and so were the rest of the band. Such a beautiful song. This song is not a blast from the past for me, I never abandoned the music made in the 70's. I still refresh my soul everyday with this beautiful era's music.
I have only listened to a few personal favourites of their songs since a few years back, but if one would ask me I would say that they way that they play together with a profound incredible groove and endless flowering developments on those themes.... well now I forgot what I was saying. I love this music.
I saw this show a few weeks prior to this taping. I have to say that this tune and 'Scarlet Begonias" was the highlight of the night. Donna was beautiful.
This is my second favorite version of the song, Cornell 77 being number 1. But I think this version has a special way of speaking the story of the song through the music. Just the way jerry shreds man. Gets me every time.
Heard this played 100+ times live but feels like the first time today...wow...just wow...wet eyes of pain in 95 are wet with joy in 2012...finally the conversion is almost complete, welcome to deadtube :)
I dated a guy when I was 16 -17, he was into the Dead. I didn't even know who they were. We went to a couple concerts and I considered myself a Dead Head. Back then I just followed him and his friends, liked what he liked. I was a kid. I'm 62 now and now I really appreciate the Dead. I love how Jerry smiles and grins while singing. Fire is my favorite song now
I took my junior prom date the following summer to a Hendrix show in ‘68 at The intimate Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md. She wanted none of it. Jimi rocked her world. In 68 he could rock ANYONE’s world I was a Deadhead (listening incessantly to “Anthem”) but couldn’t get her to bite.. This is such a great cut…
@@kevinkelehan6202 Well she's probably bragging now that she saw Jimi back in the day, and had a great time with her date from the junior prom. You couldn't have done her any better than that!
Our communications officer was fired from camp after broadcasting this over the P.A. up on the el dorado nat'l forest. We were on a forest fire that covered 30k acres. Poor guy. I was pleased to wake up and hear this tune. Apparently the overhead was not. We miss you Jerry.
Love it !!! or Leave it !!! Love it of course...Great video Thank you for the great music and great times As good as I remember gets better with age!!! Long live Jerry Garcia and the Dead
what a great song and great rythem to listen to before i go to sleep. A huge fan of the dead and this song is one of my top 5 songs from the dead thxs for posting .... mk..
one of my top 3 songs from the dead miss them I got to c them in NJ near the end of there music and prime. but still love there music and we all mis Gerry and the Band thxs for playing the video a big fan from NJ/mk...
First getting turned-on to the Dead was like learning the canyons in a mountain range - so many rivers, pools, rivers, pools, overhanging cliffs, trees, animals of one sort and another, winds, changes of weather. Night. Day. Changes of season. The turning-on continues to this day, only now I carry a map in my head of the major rock formations, and the geological evolution has gone the way of ... Jerry, o Jerry, wherefore art thou?
dawn breaks-4 hours of playing and as the sun turns the mountains to red fire as they reflect the new days light-a wonderful tribute to a new day dawning
Jerry At his absolute best with the Dead at their peak before the long decline that came next with Jerry's diabetic coma and the loss of Keith and Donna who, unlike those later, bought soul and some feminine energy as balance. The last LP I really loved is 'Shakedown Street'. It really is sad how they did not give Donna more support . Live, she could not hear her own voice, due to the sound set up and so she gets blame for sometimes being out of tune. Yet on the albums where she could hear herself her singing was an essential part of the glorious 70's chilled blissful Hippie vibe! Anyway a magic version. Jerry's tone is out of this world and here he is KING!
i agree, i love Donnas vibe, I feel bad that she definitely had her share of poor live performances. You can see her often with her fingers in her ear. Its a shame in-ear monitors hadn't been invented--may have helped. Also, pay attention to when Jerry goes from Wolf to Tiger. That's when things begin to go downhill. Such great sound at this final Winterland show. Phil playing The Godfather and Jerry on Wolf
my husband saw a rock up above us, on our first trip to yosemite, and he planned a whole sound for me on our next trip....I just lost him last month...but...Fire on the Mountain at sunset....is still on that mountian rock...what a Man...what a group...........what a fuckin song.........god i miss him.....please come back Jimmy please come back.....
so do i Gary~ right back to the stage in 1979 when the concert in Porchester NY was my private playground and Bob Weir and I were close enough to see out the same hotel window all night long!! and if this weren't enough, i repeated the second night and the magic was still there..oh glory days, huh?!
Either you get it or you don't. That has always been the case I have seen since my first show in 77. I understand the anger and frustration of those who don't get it. I would be bummed too.
Man, I knew he was a workhorse, but I didn't realize how much Bobby carries most of the Scarlet-Fire guitar work! Truly great, Garcia is of course, a genius, but Bobby's right up there with him.
its so sad Jerry hopped on the h-train, pre-1980s Jerry is inspiring. if you want to see a zombie shred a guitar the early to mid 1980s Jerry is a sight to see. this is the greatest concert ever i think
The end of my favorite era next to the Pig Pen blues driven one. Jerry is in charge and in top shape blowing our minds! Later when Keith and Donna left so did the alchemy IMHO and I moved on though I still loved to see Jerry in the 80s with his own band. Freed from the burdens as he described it, his soul could still float. But this represents the end of my passionate love for the Grateful Dead. Brent's arrival represented my loss of interest and mediocrity. This entire Concert (I have the CD!) is genius!
Long distance runner, what you standing there for? Get up, get out, get out of the door You're playing cold music on the barroom floor Drowned in your laughter and dead to the core There's a dragon with matches that's loose on the town Takes a whole pail of water just to cool him down Fire! Fire on the mountain! Fire! Fire on the mountain! Fire! Fire on the mountain! Fire! Fire on the mountain! Almost ablaze still you don't feel the heat It takes all you got just to stay on the beat You say it's a living, we all gotta eat But you're here alone, there's no one to compete If mercy's a business, I wish it for you More than just ashes when your dreams come true Fire! Fire on the mountain! Fire! Fire on the mountain! Fire! Fire on the mountain! Fire! Fire on the mountain! Long distance runner, what you holding out for? Caught in slow motion in a dash to the door The flame from your stage has now spread to the floor You gave all you had. why you wanna give more? The more that you give, the more it will take To the thin line beyond which you really can't fake Fire! Fire on the mountain! Fire! Fire on the mountain! Fire! Fire on the mountain! Fire! Fire on the mountain!
@@Beckola11 Here's a great version done by none other than Jimmy Cliff from the "Dear Jerry" concert celebration...ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-y3tntcFt9yg.html LOL...As I tried to log off the computer and turned the song off my parakeet started to freak out so I put the song back on and now they're singing to it... The bird's got great taste in music!
not in a sense. i met Bobby Ace Weir in '69. danced for him at Porchester concerts, stayed to keep him sane for three marvelous days. what a band!!!!!!!!!! i'm who i am today thanks to the GD and you know i miss the days of old terrible..almost can't breathe without my 'life in the day', but i'm testifyin' maybe that's the reason i last and last year after year. play on!
I love the Dead, loved them when I was a kid & now even more.... I have tatoos on one arm that are just Dead tats....with more to come...Musically I don't think any of the current talent, could even rise to the level of the Grateful Dead....
...almost in flames, till you don't feel the heat, takes all you got just to stay on the beat, you say IT"S a living, we all gotta eat, but you're here alone, there's no one to compete...
Weir's akways been hella underrated. China Cat Sunflower is another one that Bobby totally carries imo. He plays all the coolest parts on that song minus the solos.
