"When we were working on selecting the Bonus Material for the Grateful Dead Movie DVD, we looked at Jerry's long list of songs that he considered including in the original movie, and this Scarlet Begonias was one of them. It features some wonderful vocal improvisation by Donna Jean during the instrumental section at the end of the song." - David Lemieux

@@LibertyLynch The band always had an idea of what they'd play for a given show, but their improvisational style, & their tendency to wander into their vast repertoire of songs (be it their own or others) on a whim... All things considered, it's a feat they were able to recall the lyrics as well as they did 😉. The music actually did sometimes "play the band", a kind of phenomenon between band & audience no other band ever took as far as they did & something that, when it occurred. could never be reproduced in recordings regardless of sound quality & the main reason most didn't care if the lyrics weren't always correct, methinks.

@@George_D777 I completely agree, but I think when it came to a project like this, which Jerry poured his heart out into, me thinks he wanted to show the band to the world without any swing and misses. Thank goodness for the outtakes!!!

The vocal sibilance on these tracks from Winterland 1974/GD Movie (Wall of Sound in general) drives me crazy. (Vocal sibilance is an unpleasant tonal harshness that can happen during consonant syllables (like S, T, and Z), caused by disproportionate audio dynamics in upper midrange frequencies). Probably sounded great at the event, but the recording is bothersome. Great tune and great playing throughout. One of my favorite GD songs. Dave L., I assume you were unable to correct this at the mastering stage.

@@williamcolmer4184 i think the top mic was for the voice and the bottom mic was picking up all the other onstage sound and then that mic's signal phase was flipped so that when you combine both mics you get only the voice and none of the onstage sound. This design came about because originally i think the Dead wanted to hear the same PA that the crowd was hearing, so the PA system was BEHIND the band, which is pretty unusual.

I just love the Dead in their youth. The 67-74 era is my favorite. As a drummer I can appreciate the dual drumming with Billy and Mickey, but when it’s just Billy… it’s just a little bit tighter and had a bit more soul and groove. I’ve never been able to get into Donna. She just really doesn’t do it for me (I’m being nice). That being said ‘the Grateful Dead movie’ is a classic.

The small smile when Mr. Garcia hears the chorus come back is priceless. The essence of the band playing for the beauty of music. Brother John saying, Listen, just listen. The only time he was right. Commercialized and pigeonholed later for freaks and Deadheads. I always liked them. Like a painting someone insists that you look at and declare your love it for what they see. It's beautiful. For sure. But I see it differently. Thank God they recorded this. 50 years gone by.

@Nick, i mostly like her voice in their studio work like the studio version of Scarlet Begonias or the song called "Sunrise" from the album Terrapin Station. Also the tune "From the Heart of me." I'm a Deadhead of 30 years and i always thought it hypocritical of other Deadheads claiming to be all peace and love to come out and be so negative, nasty, and hyper-critical over a band member's vocals. They indeed take the Grateful Dead way too seriously and straight up turn a good vibe negative.
