My first Grateful Dead cassette was Europe 72, my mom died and I was just lost. I was 13 years old and one of her friends said listen to this. He just pitched it to me. Then and there 1992 Alabama, i became a Deadhead
Man I love Europe 72’ so much, It’s just sad seeing pig on stage knowing how little time he had left with the band and his life. Alligator and Love Light were always highlights for me in the primal dead sets of 67-69, pigs little quips and raps on stage just bring a new energy and life to the band. The band didn’t lose much technically or musically when he departed but a part of their soul was surely permanently fractured. As Jerry himself said at pigpens funeral “That’s not pig lying there. That’s the grateful dead!”
I like this swingin version of the song best. Has such a great groove. And not much drop off here from the extra percussion that would come back a bit later (despite the song's story).
He’s Gone, and he’s the Love of my Life.. I’ve had a lot of Loves and many Lives.. I may never tell him his smile is made of the sun’s rays and his pheromones are my personal ambrosia.. NOone can replace him, as he was my personal gift from God. Such Gratitude. BB(NLH)CH2MB whenever you want. ❤
This is the song that got me into the Dead and it’s still probably my favorite. I highly recommend the 6/22/72 version as well if anybody hasn’t heard it :) Wayyy more mellow but just as good
Bobby, I try to steal your chords all the time but, you have the most fucked up unique style, I cant figure your shit out half of the time, LOL. AWESOME!
Right? I never know what chords he seems to be playing, unless its an acoustic song and sometimes even those ones look impossible to cover, LOL. His hands always look melted :D
John Riley agreed......! He don't play no normal chords. I rememeber back in '77, I was exhiled for stating Bobby was a lead rhythm guitarist....to my defense, I was also coming down from a 4-way hit of window pane (~);-} ¡!
Maybe this will help :) If the link doesn't work, search RU-vid for "Bob Weir ISOLATED GUITAR - Grateful Dead 8/19/89 Greek Theater, Berkeley, CA" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZLV-73VF6Tg.html
"He's Gone" Rat in a drain ditch, caught on a limb You know better but I know him Like I told you, what I said Steal your face right off your head Now, he's gone, now he's gone, Lord, he's gone He's gone, like a steam locomotive Rolling down the track, he's gone, he's gone And nothing's going to bring him back, he's gone Nine mile skid on a ten mile ride Hot as a pistol but cool inside Cat on a tin roof, dogs in a pile Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile Now, he's gone, now he's gone, Lord, he's gone He's gone, like a steam locomotive Rolling down the track, he's gone, he's gone And nothing's going to bring him back, he's gone Going where the wind don't blow so strange Maybe off on some high cold mountain chain Lost one round but the price wasn't anything A knife in the back and more of the same Same old, rat in a drain ditch, caught on a limb You know better but I know him Like I told you, what I said Steal your face right off your head Like a steam locomotive Rolling down the track, he's gone, he's gone And nothing's going to bring him back, he's gone Ooh, nothing's going to bring him back Ooh, nothing's going to bring him back
Sad to see Mickey not in the mix, sadder that he left because his pops screwed the band over, but I guess if it weren't for that, we wouldn't have this gem!
