One of the best Scarlets ever! Captain Trips sails again, bringing out Tiger's ferocious grip on the listeners. Fluid arpeggios dance across exotic hardwoods, and the good Captain casts his net and captures us once again!
Wow ! You certainly have a way of painting pictures with words. I feel that a Scarlet without a Fire is like a day without a Sunshine Daydream, but that's OK because we can always put on the "In The Dark" album. Cheers !
For real, the song is the bass line, no one ever says shit about Phil. Im suprised my the lack of enthusiasm by Brent. Usually dramatic in his playing.
I was at this concert with my brother Jay July 7, 1989 the last concert at JFK stadium. Scarlet Begonias is my favorite tune by Grateful Dead. I saw Grateful Dead 33 times in concert the most of any other band I ever saw. My brother and I saw Grateful Dead/Bob Dylan on July 10, 1987. I just love their music. RIP Jerry
I was at the Dead show with Bob Dylan, have the T-shirt - doesn't fit anymore! I made 27 shows, with the most fun at Hampton (VA) Coliseum, 2 or 3 days in a row! One of the best shows I saw was at the University of Maryland, '82 or so and Red Rocks CO in '78.
Mine too,Yes Phil's bass is prominent and sounding AWESOME,...Without Brent M they where good but just not the same ,Brent was one of a kind ,Killer ayer and singer! Chris K, CT,USA
With due respect, mid 70s is the best time for the great Grateful Dead. Keith on the keyboard was the best era IMHO. To me, Brent was given a more prominent place in the sound mix in GD concerts. Nothing against Brent though as he had a great understanding with Jerry.
What I really like here is the fact that Phil´s bass is so clearly audible. Many live concerts with various artists have the bass guitar buried in the mix.
I always imagine Phil's bass line as the tall sturdy tree with Bobby's rhythm as a squirrel scurrying around while Jerry's notes are tiny birds flitting and soaring among the branches.
Phil is grooving the fuck out? Just a little bit. LOL. Love that guy and his bass notes. Nothing like being in the "Phil Zone" back in the day. I always went for that spot.
Lifetime memories! 32 shows. Stole my face. I remember shroomin so hard at soldier field when unbroken chain was played in 95! I was crying tears of joy and sadness at same time cuz I knew Jerry was at his end! 🙏🙏
I was there///It was as good in person as it looks/sounds here. I saw them a handful of times, and they didn't always sound "good" but this is one of the best concerts I've ever seen.
Jerry died when I was 11 but when I talk to my 2 older brothers and other members of my family some of which saw the dead I realize just how significant the dead were and just how iconic Jerry was. He's earned his place in Valhalla
Phil Lesh, maybe more than the others (in my opinion), really improved during every stage of their career. By this point he was so so so good. Not to take anything away from the others, but he was nowhere near the bassist in the early days as he was in later on. By '89 he could DRIVE the thing so hard. Just my opinion.
That's very true. They all had improved by this point - this was the apex in a lot of ways, really, but Phil really is something on this tune - especially compared to how he had been playing just 7-8 years prior. They're a marked difference, and way for the better. His clarity, his phrasing, his melodic ideas, his feel - just dynamite!
They definitely had some less than stellar shows. But when the stars lined up the genius flows. Jerry went through a lot of hit and miss periods, especially when his addiction was getting the best of him.
This goes down as one of Dick Latvala top favorite post Scarlet Jams. Skip to 9:10-9:50. This 40 sec Jam is why he was referring to as one of his favorite. He describes it as "Just when you think you've heard it all, out comes this, It's why we all keep coming back."
The only thing I'd add to your comment is that both Phil and Jerry deserve it. Phil for defense and Jerry for O... Truly a pity Fire is actually blocked in Canada (at least as a single stand alone vid..). Love your comment though Brother!!
I recently watched a Jerry Garcia interview and he mentioned that he never plays the same song EXACTLY the same. I love that so much about the Grateful Dead. Really adds an extra reason why there is no one else quite like them.
I was lucky to be there in the audience and to work with the stage crew afterwards breaking down the stage. The weater was perfect. And yet, at the time I didn't't realize how great this concert was. I bought the dvd a few years back and it just blew me away.
I attended this show with my brother. I was 23. Little known fact: JFK STADIUM was in such disrepair that the city of Philadelphia almost cancelled the show THAT DAY to condemn the building, which had major major structural flaws and compromised support beam integrity-LIKE CHUNKS OF CONCRETE MISSING,EXPOSED REBAR,etc. Fortunately, the go ahead was approved, the show went off without a hitch, and the structure leveled shortly therafter. It was utilized one more time when the STONES rehearsed there for, I believe, Steel wheels tour. Imagine telling 70,000 Deadheads no-show today! Yeah, it almost happened. Other than 7/12/90, and maybe fall 89 at the Spectrum(R.I.P), this was BY FAR my fav show. Amazing energy going back and forth between the band and the deadheads all night. Let It Grow, Scarlet-Fire, Estimated, Other One. What more could you ask for as a 23 year old kid?
As I was walkin' down Grosvenor Square, Not a chill to the winter but a nip to the air, From the other direction she was calling my eye, Could be an illusion but I might as well try, might as well try. She had rings on her fingers and bells on her shoes, And I knew without askin' she was into the blues. She wore scarlet begonias tucked into her curls, I knew right away she was not like other girls, other girls. In the heat of the evening when the dealin' got rough, She was too pat to open and too cool to bluff. As I picked up my matches and was closin' the door, I had one of those flashes, I'd been there before, been there before. Well I ain't often right but I've never been wrong, Seldom turns out the way it does in the song. Once in a while you get shown the light In the strangest of places if you look at it right. Well there ain't nothin' wrong with the way she moves, All scarlet begonias or a touch of the blues. And there's nothing wrong with the look that's in her eyes I had to learn the hard way to let her pass by, let her pass by. The wind in the willow's playing "Tea for Two, " The sky was yellow and the sun was blue, Strangers stopping strangers just to shake their hand, Everybody's playing in the heart of gold band, heart of gold band. Songwriters: Jerry Garcia / Robert Hunter
If you ever wanted to explain to someone why people loved the Grateful Dead live just let them watch this. So many times jams can lose the average listener but not with the dead. The jam becomes its own song.
For my first show this show is a stellar performance. Great set list. They were on fire that night. It was truly a life altering and life defining moment. It changed my life forever.
My first show was Jersey City 1971 Hooked! RFK Stadium with Allman Brothers 1973 Another favorite Then the last show at JFK This show started in sunlight ended in dark. Thank you for posting Jerry looks like he is having so much fun besides high as a kite lol This summer tour to me ranks up there with the legendary 1977 tour through New England God Bless the Grateful Dead
I had tickets to this, came down with strep throat two days before, running a 102 temp the day of. Probably would have died there in that heat. One of the very few wise decisions I made in my twenties!
Pgh 95 was great it poured first set jerrys hair blowing damn i missed whole first set at buckeye year b4 its such same noone can live through it live again
This video needs a warning that Phil might blow your ass away with that bass. You will probably start involuntarily moving around and dancing. You've been warned.
Love this version ...also the Era the late 80s early nineties DEAD is my favorite.I did slot of shows back then and listening brings me rite back to that feeling again ,Superb LIVE shows. That was them a LIVE Touring Band with a huge Circus or moving hippie city with them from coast to coast everywhere they GO! Chris K.,CT,USA
My 2nd Dead show, first was 7/10/87. I had no clue but loved it. By this time I learned and at the time Scarlet/Fire was my favorite I fell in Love with Jerry on the spot. 14 years later still in LOVE!!!
For those who remember there was a nice stretch of time between I would say 88-92ish Jerry was so dialed in & just had that friggin Jerryness for lack of a better word! He brought a rockstar vibe to these northeast shows man. It was a super cool time....
9:20 the section here, after hundreds, thousands of hours of listening to different dead shows, this section right here is still one of my all time favorite bits
Were definitely in a grooove this day! Grateful to have been there, even with a not so pleasurable shakedown incident to a friend, was a magical show. Love Brents lovelight. "Fuck it open your hand all the way!"
I'm frying so hard on some very good clean LSD💥and paranoia was setting in but by a miracalous twist of fate the opening notes of scarlet begonias made everything not only ok but beautifully perfect in every sense
A difficult song to play. You can see them getting ready for it at the beginning. Around 3:40 Garcia signals to his band mates the time is here for them to "take the musical excursion" and why, in an interview reflecting on a question about his playing he answered saying, "i don't play the same song the same twice." One of those excursions is wonderfully taken here by the Grateful Dead as they play out, "Scarlet Begonias".
At last minute, drove up to Philly for this concert from Ocean City NJ with my best friend...Perhaps the best concert I have ever been to. This was highlight of show for me...they went from Scarlet Begonias right into Fire on the Mountain. To see this on You tube years later is awesome!!!!
Phil is just astonishing in this one. The bottom is wherever he says it is. And Weir does something that's almost impossible, which is to play with Garcia while staying absolutely out of his way.
Although captain of the helm Of the most beautiful starship what people don’t realize is that the whole band was magical together! Like humanity if we all got together we would be magical as well!
The Fire Marshall condemned JFK the day of the show but after negotiations ("you don't want 100,000 stoned-out hippies rioting") relented and allowed the show to take place
this track has such a catchy rythmic base.I first heard it when they played 3 consecutive nights at alexander palace london in september 1974. one of the best middle solos here too.
Oh yea and babylon crumbling, concrete was laying in all the walkways from all the stomping. Literally brought the house down! Closed JFK STADIUM after this show! AWESOME
@@knutbaardsen1202 Sorry I didn't see your reply earlier. Yes - the crumbling concrete of the floors. Baking in the Sun through all of WW2 and every after. It was a real standout. WEIRD.
@@stephengriffin7870 This concert saw a disturbing amount of acid combined with alcohol. I remember one such chick scaling the chain link fence along the exterior of the stadium which was topped by barbed wire. Somehow she got over, then fell 6 feet to the dilapidated concrete floor inside. She stumbled off. I guess she got her miracle in that it seems no bones were broken. It degraded us all, lol.
Was in the front "row" (obviously, it was GA) in front of Jerry. Not the best spot for sound, but still excellent... and it was a very special evening. Even mom and dad were there, too, up in the stands.. their one and only GD show. They loved it. In truth, it wasn't as great as Buffalo on the 4th. That was truly a legendary show. But it was probably the second best night on the '89 east coast summer tour. The best Scarlet and Scarlet jam I ever saw was yet to come... Copps Coliseum, 1990, which was pure supercharged tripping from note one onward.
I got on this tour in Philly, killer 2 nd set, Phil box , big screens, then giants, RFK, Alpine 3 night run, the band was tight 89 summer tour, God bless my old friends Pablito and Liesel who did the run with me, great memories!!!! Mikey
