Why I love Jerry Sure, any band can take you to a place, with lyrics or music that transcends time. Again, every band can do this. What Jerry could do was take you past that transcendent point. When you thought you couldn’t get any higher, any happier, any more “enlightened,” yes you could. You could soar past that limit, hold this little piece of heaven in your mind, and just let go, even if just for a moment. That’s why I love Jerry Garica.
+Ryan Giddings NO! Not just any band can take you to a place with music or lyrics that transcends time! If that were the case The Bay City Rollers would be mentioned in the same breath as Jerry and the Boys. I'm glad my generation had weed and lsd and left all the stupid drugs for generations to come! Was this a Spice induced thought?
+Ryan Giddings BULLSHIT. Garcia wasn't Christ, Buddha, Moses or Allah. He was a human being - A musician, songwriter and human being. Placing the weight of "enlightenment" or "Transcendentalist" on him by so many Deadheads is one of the pressures that killed him. Think about that for a minute.
+JoshDone C'mon man, Garcia died because his cholesterol was approaching 300 and he had 85% blockage in his arteries which led to him having a massive, fatal heart attack. While putting him on the pedestal that many deadheads did was a gigantic pain in the ass for him and very misguided, it had nothing to do with his death. He smoked 2 packs of Camels a day, had an awful diet, and abused hard drugs for a large majority of his life. That is what killed him. Don't blame some nonsense. He would laugh at that.
Such a beautiful song sung by a beautiful man and played by a beautiful band. I see a lot of post saying they miss Jerry. Well, yeah, we all do. But if you want to hang out with him we are all so lucky to have this footage. Along with alot more. Jerry gave us his all. And he did what he loved which was play music and have FUN!!!!!
Anyone else watching this after the D&C 06/29/19 SotM from last night Weir sang and the band nailed, and that verse when Bobby started wellin’ up? Me infinity!
@@fogtown gawd this song is too rich start to finish ... listen to a MollyTuttle cover ... she really does it justice. i get something in my eye whenever I listen.
I was here, 17 years old somehow drove myself and my friends down and back from CT. I was lucky to have seen a lot of these shows from their last heyday 89-90, this was one of the best I was lucky to see. The Scarlet/Fire is one of the top 5 for me.
omfg this is SO BEAUTIFUL.......I am just turning 60 this August.....didn't think I'd make it this far either , but here I am....I am just so grateful that I had the chance to see this band play 3 times in my life, and all 3 times, it was with Brent at the keys......
I am so happy to be alive and able to watch this again. It takes me to the moon and back! I am sure that Jerry would want us to carry on in his style and love every minute of it! I can't believe that it is so long ago already.
I was 17 at this show, my first. The Who was in town that weekend too, across the parking lot at the Vet. Both venues are now gone, replaced by soulless corporate branded boxes. It is truly sad how far the quality of life has fallen since then.
Just got married today and the entire day I could not get this BEAUTIFUL song out of my head, "Standing on the moon where talk is cheap and vision true, standing on the moon but I would rather be with you...." Thank you Jerry and Phil on this one (and of course the rest of the Dead) made my day even more special. Thank you, Thank you and Thank you again!
This comment isn't meant to take anything away from This song/performance, quite the opposite.. Please have a listen to Molly Tuttle's cover. Nobody has done this tune Justice otherwise. imho.
The first song I heard after the news of the twin towers cry of victory another of defeat and realizing that its not what you see but who you see it with
One of the greatest grateful Dead concerts of all time and the last show at my beloved JFK Stadium. I moved to Santa Cruz 3 weeks later. I've seen thousands of shows since then but 7-7-89 can only be described as EPIC.
" I hear the cries of children and the other songs of war" are some very powerful lyrics and hearing Jerry sing them is a total fucking tear jerker. It makes us (by us I mean Americans, westernized, the fortunate) realize how well off we have it and how most of the problems we face pale in comparison to what others face on a daily basis. I realize I'm pointing out the obvious just wish I (we) could get this message through to the rest of the assholes that inhabit this place.
it takes real musical prowess to play this slow and do it well. when done right it cant be denied. I know I'll get hate for this but I actually noticed Kacey Musgraves band is capable of doing this too.
never dreamed that one day Millennial Democrats would call Captains words as racist. Crimson White and Indigo~~~Grateful Dead America"s most American Band!!!!!
God I would love for just one time to be able to hear Jerry sing one of his songs like this, and not have a tear travel down my face. I just cant help it...he gets me every time.
WHAT A SWEET, SWEET LEAD!!! AND SOME SWEET, SWEET BASS PLAYING! That nice FAT low, umm, “ low rounded growl” sound!! Sorry! Don’t know how to put what I’m hearing and thinking into something that makes sense!! As a bass player, I STRIVE for that “ growl” WITHOUT too much top end!! But again, THAT SWEET LEAD!! I was there and it sounds just as good as when I was 4th row sweating my ass off!!
You know that movie cliché that says any time a mafioso attends an opera he must get sentimental and tear up when the performer hits the high note. That's what this music does to real people.
too easy to get caught up in Jerry’s warmth and treatment of the song , easy to not see what a gorgeous song it is . - that’s the problem with the Dead - not sure which level of greatness to focus on
Do you ever go to a first concert of a band you had not yet listened to and one song is a stand out. This was that song for me at the Omni in Atlanta in 1994. The lyrics are pretty much unbeatable.
SUCH A BEAUTIFUL SITE HERE UP HERE IN HEAVEN, BUT I WOULD RATHER BE WITH YOU,... NOT FADE AWAY!!! Long strange trip it's been, hello to all and to a greater tomorrow and 2019...
There aren't any "bad" versions of this song. The awful thing is the sadder Jerry is the better it sounds, this is a good closer like Broke Down Palace.
