It's fun figuring out these tunes. Jerry was playing through the changes and made great use of triads with all sorts of extra coloring for this tune. A true master. I love what Miles said about the Dead, they were jazz musicians playing rock music. Thanks Tomo!!!!!!!

Amazing player! It's really difficult explain clearly what Jerry Garcia's playing so like this.... listen music together and learn what Jerry's playing? Bob's rhythm guitar is awesome too! It's simple yet not easy!
When are you and I going to meet on some sun swept beach in FL, CA or HI and have a serious guitar DUEL ? Hahaha. The only 'secret' is sunshine. Let it shine shine shine.
I love how you addressed when people are improving, they aren’t necessarily thinking about a particular mode. Rather they are feeling the music which may have certain modal characteristics. Not to say people aren’t thinking about a mode or certain scale when exercising however I feel not many people point out just playing what you hear/ feel. Thank you for the video tomo!!

That middle pickup really gets that jerry tone in the strat. I never would have thought till I seen a video that said he use it a lot. Great lesson by the way. Love your videos.

I can't tell you how much I enjoy watching your videos. Your unique talents for teaching/instruction combined with your humility, and humour make for very captivating understanding and learning. A perfect example of all of this in one is toward the end of the video where you are explaining Jerry's style and influences and then vamp off into country and then say distraction at the end, LMAOF. I love the human and personal interaction with your audience trying to bring the teaching experience like one in which a student is with you in your studio, like when you describe your gear. I am definitely going to join guitar wisdom. You said any more requests. Was wondering if you could do Duane Allman. I know he does slide but his melodies are so amazing and they do alot of the major scale.
Really amazing! So great to hear that! You're welcome! Thanks so much! Guitar is so deep! If you do it too seriously... not good! You need to borrow a spirit from Mr. Bean! (another hero!) I make this as if I am teaching my student! We're beautifully not perfect! By the way, I transcribed Duane's solo (long time ago!) Thank you for this excellent video! This is now my favorite video about teaching a "Jerry-style" solo. You teach the first lesson I have seen that emphasizes the importance of sharing the feeling and being in the spirit of live music. Others have been able to show what to do, but you have amazingly been able to convey to me HOW to do it! Lots of information here, and lots to practice. I had to pause and replay the video several times from around 6:05 - 8:00 so I could write down everything you said. Some incredible insight and wisdom into what live music is all about!

Tomo! I did not know you teach Dead tunes! Killer lesson. Do you have any more like this? PS I'll be joining guitar Wisdom after I complete a course I'm currently taking. Can't wait.
This an excellent Dead tune to use as a learning tool to play major pentatonic major scales etc! I use a lot of major triad phrases and of coarse using the CAGED System for blending different B AND E AND a Chords... Excellent Job!

Fantastic lesson Tomo thank you kindly for sharing! I wanted to take a quick moment to mention that I recently discovered Gabriel Bergman’s channel on RU-vid. Lots of great lessons on Grateful Dead tunes and style. I’m more of a beginner on guitar but can easily tell that he was a student of yours at Berklee :) I highly recommend Gabriel’s channel on RU-vid to any other learners who want to take some deeper dives into Jerry’s style of playing. I typed this comment before getting to the end of the video, so my apologies if Gabriel’s name happened to have been mentioned. Take care everyone and have a great new year ahead !

Tomo! When you skip the major 7th its referred to as the "gospel" scale. Some construe it as major pentatonic plus the 4th. Both are right! You are the man!

Tomo. Man you're loving the new camera. I was able to inspect the magnets with that thing, great shot. Yeah, i concur, all I see is B's and E's arpeggios everywhere all day long while playing 'my darlin sugaree.

Fascinating lesson. Thank you. I’ll be watching more. I’m amazed at how many RU-vid teachers seem to use PRS guitars as their primary guitar. I can think of 4-5 right off the top of my head. Did a tour of PRS factory years ago. One of the highlights of my guitar life...
For many years, I don't have any guitar tech for my guitars except when I see my friend Kanji Kawabata, he fixed a lot of my guitars. So mostly I do my own set up.
I'm simply amazed by the way you traverse across the frets in your improvisation. As an amateur in the path of self- discovering how to develop fret knowledge I'm doing a brute force methodology of using movable-do notation background to figure out which box I'm in by mapping the current note to get the scale. Like if on B string I hit 'la' with forefinger then I realise I'm in D box or instead of forefinger I hit 'la' using ring finger I assign 'la' as C# and assign E box. Do people use this methodology at all or do you really learn the frets absolutely by heart? The thing is I'll have to hit a note to know the box. I'll never be able to know absolute notes before knowing the box.
Thanks so much! It's all about simple melody & rhythm! and space! I have more detail video lessons at my Guitar Wisdom site. Simple triad idea is good for learning the fretboard. No need to memorize and shapes! Learn the sounds with theory behind.
Hey Tomo! I’m a 14 year old guitarist and I’ve been playing since I was ten and a I’m really big fan of yours. I practice 2, 3, or 4hours a day depending on the day. My inspirations include but are not limited too John Mayer, SRV, and Hendrix. I was wondering if you had any advice for young guitar players like me. Thank you! And have a nice day! 😃
Thanks so much! Good job! That's a lot of hours you can practice so you need to look for more quality, how to do things more proper ways. If I were you, I would work hard as I can and never ask any important issues as free advices in internet! Hendrix, SRV, Mayer, Gibs... Okay one thing. Think before Hendrix? That's your homework to find out!! Take your time!! Don't expect too fast!!
So nice to hear that! You're welcome! Thanks so much! Which version do you like? Just added "pitch-recognition ability" and the new "Harmonic Minor video” tomojustfunky.com/tomo-fujita-guitar-practice-advice/
@@TomoFujitaMusic It is really hard to pick one version all of them are awesome but i think the original SRV and Double Trouble studio version is my favorite. Btw i have already checked your Pitch recognition abillity article and harmonic minor video, can not thank you enough for what you do, i am sure soon your website will be the best cheap effective guitar lesson website on the internet. Cheers
1. Understand the 1-4 quick progression to added color. The song is B to E. But you add the 4th on each. B to a quick E and E to a quick A. 2. Learn 3 Jerry phrases 3. ? I didn't hear a level 3 Other tips: Only listen to small bits at a time. Pick a few minutes of Jerry's solo and listen to it on repeat a ton. Jerry isn't limited to one scale. It's more chord times/triads/arpeggios. It's not locked into one scale such as mixolydian. It's "around" a major scale. That gives him the ability to feel and improvise with the other notes (2, b3, 6, b7, 7, etc.). Jerry goes between playing a melody lead and playing "rhythm" lead. Tomo's examples of how changing rhythm over the same notes completely changes everything. Learning more than 3 things at a time is not practical and people will have difficulty applying it.
Love your lessons. Very valuable practical stuff. It might help the viewers to clearly state the 3 things in the beginning, then show them with the lesson, then review them at the end. Also, it's helpful when you explain what you are playing. I'm working on my ear and know I should be able to hear it. But I'm an amateur any explanation helps. Like how you described that mixolydian dyadic walk down. Very helpful. Hope those comment help. Thanks again for your teaching. I appreciate it!
My fault! Sorry! I taught too many things! You're correct! Supposed to only 3 levels! That's why I really enjoy making my Guitar Wisdom course where each video only contain ONE topic at times.
yeah, but you can hardly expect the average person to get there without knowing a mixolydian scale so it's really unfair as to what you're saying and I think you need to start considering mortal human beings
