One of the greatest short track drivers ever. Its believed he had over 1200 short track victories. He was billed as the winningest short track driver in history. After his death the family said he was in so much pain he would go to the Dr twice a day but the cause of his pain was never determine. Unfortunately the pain was to much causing him to commit suicide.

@@BackRoads1 Winning the rookie of the year at almost 50 I can only imagine what he could have accomplished in todays NASCAR era where 16 year old are signing developmental driver contracts with big teams. Sad he made it to CUP at a later age and never in what you would call "winning" equipment when he got there.

Of course NASCAR is more or less a footnote in his career. To those 1200 wins, I believe the standing is that he "only" started 2200. So 50% win rate if that is true

I was at the COPPER CLASSIC in PHOENIX ARIZONA in 1990 i believe.. A friend of mine Toby Butler dominated that race but a crew member overfilled the rear end and he had to pit dropping him 2-laps down .. He was able to get back to chasing Trickle down but ran out of tires and TRICKLE won the race..! Yeah Dick was smoking in the pits in victory lane..! 😮 Yes he was a AMAZING short track champion but not necessarily a good role model for kids … So sad he could not find a doctor or therapist to help his problem… i had a good friend who lost 4 years of work because he developed migraine headaches and couldn’t function but was able to get help from a real good chiropractor that worked on the Atlas in his neck thus he returned to a high tech job so don’t ever give up … ! 🏁🇺🇸

Before Dick went to the big league, he dominated the tracks here in Wisconsin. My father raced against him often at Rockford and Capital Speedway ( now Madison International). I have some painful health issues and out Health Department here wanted pain meds reduced so I went along with it and got to a certain point where the pain was so bad that I wanted to die. Luckily my GP sent me to a wonderful psychiatrist to threatened to take the Health Department to court if they didn’t reinstate my medication so they did as it was the cause of the severe depression. He has had my back ever since and I will be forever grateful to him. He has just done another letter to the Department and I have another permit for the next two years. I've put this question to some people from time to time. Q. What is someone supposed to do when they absolutely cannot take one more second of the pain, not one more and there's nothing they can do at that very second to stop it? When they reach that point of can't take it another second, what are they supposed to do?

Trickle's biggest accomplishments came from racing late models on the short tracks primarily Wisconsin and surrounding states. He was/is a legend. I have fond memories of all the races I attended where Dick was always the man to beat. At the night races, you could see the glow of a cigarette in his cockpit during cautions. Late in his career he did some Nascar, as you mentioned, but that paled in comparison to his gritty, hard-nosed, rockem-sockem short track days! What a racer!

In the 60's my Dad was a racing fan and we lived in south central Wisconsin. We went to most of the local tracks, Dick was my racing hero...still is...he would come late, at times no qualifying start at or near the back...he would still be a threat and all the drivers knew it. Yes he did win a few of those races it, it was so exciting to have my own superhero to look forward to every weekend. There was a day race at what was then called "Capitol Super Speedway" in Oregon WI. Dick had won the "feature" event and I was excited like crazy...this was in the 70's. I had heard some talk in the pit about Dick sometimes going to a little tavern a couple of miles from the track. It was and is still called "White Rock"...so I wandered over there to see if i could actually see this legend of short track racing. Yuppprs, Dick was there because I can remember seeing his fairly unique car hauler and it had one of those famous 99' Fords on top...I was excited. I got a glimpse of Dick walking across the parking lot towards the hauler...by himself...I felt like I needed to make my move to meet my racing hero...I went for it. Caught up with him at the hauler...I greeted him and he shook my hand and we began to converse...after a short time, he reached in to a cooler on that hauler and bragged 2 ice cold Pabst Blue Ribbon beers and handed me one. Believe it or not, Dick and I stood there alone in the parking lot of White Rock Tavern and drank those PBR's together...we were totally BS'ing...now almost 50 years later it still ranks as one of my greatest experiences, Dick really loved and appreciated his fans.

I had the privilege of meeting Dick Trickle at the fan autograph signing in Downtown Phoenix, AZ, the Thursday night before the 1999 NASCAR Cup Series Fall race at Phoenix. I loved rooting for an underdog driver who had great talent, and was racing far better than he should have in the equipment he had. I was able to get signatures from a variety of Cup Series drivers, including Matt Kenseth, Michael Waltrip, and Dale Jarrett (who went on to win the Winston Cup title that year). All of these guys are great people, and a lot of fun to meet, but Dick Trickle was the warmest of them all, and was very appreciative of fans who wanted his autograph. I walked away in awe of how nice he was and the time he took to talk about racing. He was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. I choose to remember him for his humbleness, his humor, and the passion we shared for racing. Godspeed, Mr. Trickle, your kindness will live on in the hearts of your race fans like me.

He was scheduled to race in the Winston Cup Truck series in 1997. Chris was an up and coming driver out of Vegas, who dominated the Southwest tour and drove for Star Nursery. After the tragic event Kurt Busch took over the ride for Star Nursery and we all know where Kurt ended up. Chris would have been a major player in the Cup Series, if he was given the chance.

My dad used to take my brother and I down to Daytona for Speed Weeks back in the 70s, 80's I remember watching Dick Trickle at New Smyrna Speedway smaking a cig on the back stretch during a red flag. The little orange glow was like a laser. I remember looking in his car and seeing a cigarette lighter. The man was a Great Short Track Driver. Truly one of the very best. Sad when he killed himself, point blank in the chest with a large caliber pistol. The story told at the time was he had incredible pain in his chest that was untreatable and not able to be diagnosed. I used to have a model car based on his 1969 Mustang fastback, purple with a white roof and sponsored by A&W. He most assuredly qualifies as a Legend. I wish him peace and Rest.

"THE WHITE KNIGHT"... Dick was in a TON of pain in his later years and they never could find out what exactly caused it, he even went to DUKE medical center thinking maybe just MAYBE they could come up with a reason for his incredible pain...he lost hope after that and not wanting to go ANOTHER DAY in such mindbending pain, he took his own life to ease it, never got the ride in NASCAR someone of his talent SHOULD have, but made a nice living as a mom and pops racing team and won many high dollar races in his trademark PABST BLUE RIBBON car

For sure a fan Favorite regardless of who you were rooting for, he was always well like by all the fans. Sad that he departed the way he did, but this was his only way of getting pain relief. He will long be remembered for being one of the winningest short track drivers and very similar to Ken Shrader, he raced everything all the time! Great video!

A fellow I worked with about 20 years ago overheard me talking to someone about NASCAR. He asked me if I had heard of a driver named Dick Trickle, I responded that I knew the name and that he'd been driving for years and was one of those drivers that always earned enough points to keep his spot but never managed to get any big wins. He then told me D.T. was his great uncle. When you get older you start losing things that your used to doing for yourself, my oldest brother was suffering degenerative medical problems and finally reached the point he'd had enough. I miss him, but I also believe his judgement was sound and it was his time.

Dick was a sucess in everything he did. He raced ASA, ARTGO, ARCA, All Pro, IMCA, NASCAR, and USAC, winning over 1200 races. He was a friendly guy, even with the pressure of racing, and would take time to talk to fans and joke around. The racer with a funny name, God Bless you Dick!

I'm from Missouri , and I've been a weekly racing series driver for 25 years +. I had to do a tour in the service and a couple of marriages before doing so and it was after that that I had the honor of meeting him. Both he and Larry Phillips were heros of mine that I was very fortunate enough to meet on a personal level . I think that might be what is contributing to the breakdown of America now we don't have gyros in young people's lives anymore .

I met Dick when he drove for Stavola Bros that first year. I remember when they made the decision, heard his name and thought, omg what a name. He was a very likeable guy, and we cheered him on in every race. I also think they changed the car colour to this High Life gold that year, instead of the previous red and white. The gold was a really tough colour to find and see on the track. Unfortunately, I think every race I watched, Dick was at the back of the pack, but he seemed to nearly always finish. My word this was 3 decades ago and I've forgotten nearly all of what happened back then. I do remember Dick was a quiet no nonsense driver, just did his thing without the drama many other drivers seem to need. I fell out of touch with all of NASCAR, got busy in life overseas for more than 2 decades. My life has slowed way down, and just this past week, I started researching some of the drivers I met at that time (late 80s thru early 90s) to see what they are doing these days. I don't know what I expected, but I am saddened by how many have passed, both on and off the track. I was truly shocked to see the title of this video. I knew Dick would no longer be racing, but I didn't expect this. I always wished the best for Dick. Condolences and blessings to those who knew and loved Richard Trickle.

Born and raised in Milton, Wisc when a friend of mine said, "Hey let's go to a race car shop and hang out. I ended up babysitting the owner's kids and just walked into a spot at helping out in the shop during the week doing low level intelligent jobs. That car owner was Elmer Ehrens. We would race Tricky Dick, weekly. We would get to the track, run a few hot laps trying to figure out the best set up, and just a short time before the checkered was scheduled to drop, in rolls Trickle, in what to us, appeared to be a Nascar type hauler compared to what we all had. Dick was always very professional in his approach to racing. The pits were in awe, he was a celebrity of sorts, because none of our cars could compete with him, even on short tracks with low lap counts. None of our toolboxes were like his. None of our trailers were like his. We were weekend warriors, and he was fully committed, and it showed. When he made it to Nascar, I rooted for him, just because he paid his dues the hard way and I saw it first-hand. After getting easily beat by him one night, I Loaded our late model onto the trailer, and I remember thinking, "I could be Tricky Dick". But no, I couldn't, it was like the young kid imagining he struck out the Pete Rose with bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th. I remember hearing of his suicide and thought, why? But I knew of his nonstop efforts to win and saw the cost it took on him, and figured he simply couldn't pay that price anymore.
