I picked this specialized hard rock up for $ 375 including the bars to hopefully replace my stolen ebike with a gravel bike. This is my video of the conversion. All the parts were either spare parts, sourced from Amazon, or bought from a local bike shop.
Crankset: www.amazon.com/CYSKY-Mountain...
34t round chainring: www.amazon.com/JGbike-Chainri...
If you have any questions about the tools or methods used please let me know in the comments.

Pro(ish) tip; on mechanical disc brakes, cut the brake cable with less than an inch of extra length so that it CAN"T bend right and then get caught inside the holes or slots in the rotor. I know because someone at the shop I used to work at left about three inches of extra cable. The kid who bought it apparently went over the bars multiple times in one day of riding. Needless to say we were incredibly relieved he didn't break his nose or worse. If this doesn't make sense imagine you have a brake rotor and stuck a small object into one of the holes in it as you're riding. The rotor will continue to rotate before violently stopping as that object tries to pass through the caliper.
@theorangebaron1595
@theorangebaron1595 3 года назад

I used the same crankset as in the video. I went with microshift advent 9 speed. I try to avoid Amazon, but the local bike shops weren't really any help, and Amazon had everything I needed. I spent about $250 with tools and parts. Definitely worth it.

@peterharrington8709
@peterharrington8709 3 года назад
Assuming you want fast road speed and an easy climbing gear you're going to need either a large, wide range cassette at the back (and derailleur / shifter combo that can cope with that), OR a 2x setup.... 46/30 or a little smaller would be ideal.

@theorangebaron1595

I am not sure of the bars. Flared one would be ideal but they can be pricey. Hydraulic brakes are too expensive to get in a drop bar format. At this era of bikes, is most economic to use mechanical discs brakes for the drop bar levers.

I’m currently planning to convert my mtb to a gravel bike so this was nice and very helpful. Btw when you replaced your cranks did you replace your chain as well? And do you need a rigid fork for a gravel bike or is it alright if i just leave my suspension forks on the bike?
@theorangebaron1595
@theorangebaron1595 3 года назад
Thanks for asking! The original chain should work but a new one is only like 10 dollars and it can be optimized for a 1x drivetrain. I would recommend a rigid suspension fork upgrade but they can be expensive. They do save lots of weights and increase efficiency though. The choice is up to you, I would recommend an aluminum one over a carbon one for durability and reliability. There are some ones on AliExpress for less than 100 dollars.

this build is great! when watching the build i noticed you put two spacers on the drive side, is the chainline good doing that? hope its bringing you joy and keep at it this is really awesome.
@theorangebaron1595

Yes, you have to measure the bottom bracket shell width to determine the spacer placement to get an optimal chain line. Thanks for watching!

No I don’t but I think they were off of a giant gravel bike. I would recommend getting wider bars as these were a tad narrower than I wanted

I struggle to understand how the new version is brtter compared to the previous 3x system which gave you way more gear range and was marginaly heavier.
@theorangebaron1595
@theorangebaron1595 3 года назад
I don’t need the resolution of gears that a 3x offers and the bottom bracket needed to be replaced and this was a great opportunity to make it 1x. The best part is that you can do what you want with your bike!

I'm surprised the microshift shifter works with an mtb derailleur. I just bought an 8 speed road style microshift shifter that is claimed to work with Claris which supposedly has a different cable pull. Interesting.
