How laterally (and vertically) stiff is Litespeed's new titanium gravel race bike? After riding the Ultimate G2 around Boulder, I headed to Pueblo for the first edition of Gravel Locos in Colorado to test it out.
¿Que es Gravel Locos? It's a good time for charity, is what: www.gravellocos.bike/

Ben, excellent point about the rear triangle flex and how it impacts acceleration. The bigger the rider, the more pronounced the flex becomes under power and for smaller riders it is less noticeable. That's been one of the complaints I've heard even from riders back when 26er Ti hardtails were all the rage in the '90s. Great review and overall ride impressions as always.

I can only tell from 30 years experience with my 93 Litespeed Ocoee ht that it accelerates 97% as fast as my former KLEIN Attitude BUT the KLEIN was harsh as hell even with suspension fork …and as I love to ride off-road…my Litespeed is still as GREAT as it ever was. Plus our bodies doesn’t get younger, do they?! 😉💪🏼

I think it is worth mentioning Spinergy wheels reached their global zenith by being featured on the TV show Pacific Blue.

i dont really think GX is a race wheel (and i ride the). but what they ARE is bombproof. ive got about 4000 miles of trashing and underbiking and they are are true as the day i got them and have had 0 issues.

So Ti is for adventure gravels. Not for racing due to soft bottom bracket and lack of acceleration. Nice to know it. Thanks for very informative review 👍

Hi Ben, the bottle cage can be extended by attaching an extender. I had to use one because I had the same issue except I didn’t have a framebag installed! 😂 small frames 😅

Want to point out that a set up with Spinergy wheels and anything Di2 appears to be in the upper $6k range, even though the overall starting point is under $5k. I have a Watia with the same Ultegra/GRX drivetrain set up you showed, it's an incredible all--road bike for the CO Front Range. Titanium is a supremely enjoyable ride!

A B-rad base from Wolf Tooth would give additional flexibility for the bottle mount locations as well.

Nice coverage Ben, thanks to have you there to taste a slice of an original gravel race. Ti was always on my list for a new bike. But what a disappointed when I bought a (Dutch) Van Nicholas road frame! OK, the spring-like compliance is at the rendez-vous but sluggish acceleration too... To my eyes you need much more power to move fast. Today's carbon bikes have tremendous comfort WITH stiffness. So you don't have to choose. So -as you noted- Ti is better choice for long/careless(reg. the rocks!) gravel rides/races. Something I dislike in this bike is the "comfort' triangle there, in the seat post/seatstays joint, something that hit me upside the head on GT & Lapierre bikes. Probably it helps somewhere but it's definitely ugly. So, disappointed to see Litespeed to follow this way. Hope in the future they will correct it.... P.S.1: I was shocked to see evidence 1 (13:23) & 2(13:29) reg. rear triangle stiffness. WOW, I mean WOW! Thank you. P.S.2: I warn you, I'm a SRAM-head, but separate/interchangable batteries and lack of these small cables around front & rear derailleurs -like those I saw in this bike- make SRAM groupsets a must for gravel.
@TheRidewithBenDelaney
@TheRidewithBenDelaney Год назад
Cheers, Lazaros. Re P.S.2: I've currently got a SRAM battery rubber-banded to a derailleur because the tab broke off, and the one on the BMC stopped working then started working again mid-race at BWR. It's always something! 😄

Nice video, what frame size was this bike? thanks
@davekashuba4730
@davekashuba4730 Год назад
I wonder how much additional vertical compliance you would have gotten with a carbon seatpost, or even the ti one they offer with the 20mm offset. It also seems like you could have gone down a size, which would probably give you a stiffer frame laterally but with more compliance in the seatpost.
@TheRidewithBenDelaney
@TheRidewithBenDelaney Год назад
Yeah, that's a good shout. I usually do a 56 and longer stem vs a 58 with stock stem, mostly because I've got Fred Flintstone legs and a longer torso. This 58 fit pretty well, tough.

If the seat tube is not shimmed to accept a 27.2 post as many good titanium bikes normally are, and is left at 31.6, the ride will most certainly be harsh at the saddle.

Hi Ben, great channel, love the honesty and humbleness of your videos! Had a couple of questions after catching up on a few of your videos.. for someone that isn't racing (and will never race competitively), a roadie that likes his bars almost saddle level (probably because I'm not in the best shape), and not looking to spend much over $5k, what bikes would you suggest? You seem to (at least in this video) like the Giant Revolt, any feedback on the open-mold Obed Boundary? Others? Guess I'm stuck between do I need/want a gravel race bike or just a gravel bike? Would love to hear your thoughts, maybe a future video? Thanks and I look forward to your videos, they are a refreshing change from most of the other stuff on YT.. :)
@TheRidewithBenDelaney
@TheRidewithBenDelaney Год назад
Thanks, Chris. I love the Revolt and Canyon also has great bikes for the money. I have not yet tried the Obed. As for what type of bike you want, it comes down to your preference on handling. Good idea for a future video!
@glassacre
@glassacre Год назад
Hey, it's been a few months since you asked this but I'd take a look at the Obed GVR. I'm in the same space as you - loving racing, but only against myself (& never competitively). I'm in semi-decent shape but also middle aged. The GVR has done me well, in the ~year of ownership. I got it with 2x GRX Di2. I think it fits really nicely into the "just a gravel bike" and a "gravel race bike" category. It's also more aero than the Boundary is.
@TheRidewithBenDelaney
@TheRidewithBenDelaney Год назад
Cool, thanks. Still need to check one out.
@Chris_Rides_Bikes
@Chris_Rides_Bikes Год назад
@@glassacre you don't feel the GVR is too aggressive? I GVR has tad higher stack, but a tad longer reach.. maybe the higher stack cancels our the longer reach when all is said and done? And thanks for your insight, really appreciate it! BTW Ben- did get to ride a Canyon Grizl and it was pretty good
@glassacre
@glassacre Год назад
@@Chris_Rides_Bikes I may not be the best person to ask that, as the GVR is actually my first gravel bike. What I can say is the folks at Obed really dialed it in for me, and nailed the sizing. All I needed to do was move the saddle a bit forward. Is it too aggressive for me? No, but I also ride mostly in race positions too. I'm constantly trying to better my times (but again, only against myself). I've done a few Century rides on it and it's been great. On my road wheels, it rides like an antelope, super responsive. It's a bit more laid back on my gravel wheels. I got a size S with a 90mm stem but if you want to be a bit more upright, go with 80mm. They will totally work with you to get your style of riding down. For me, position-wise, I have zero complaints.

So I'm not the only one severing Di2 wires, I did mine in when I first got my Giant Revolt while trying to insert the seat post, which is a bit of a fiddly nightmare with that shim. $1200 upcharge for custom geo sounds a bit pricey, aren't they just cutting some of the tubes to a different length?
@TheRidewithBenDelaney
@TheRidewithBenDelaney Год назад
If I had a dollar for every time I accidentally knocked that shim or the compression bolt down into the seat tube on the Revolt… I’d have six or seven dollars. On the custom geo, I would guess that some if not most of the charge is the interaction with the customer and getting them dialed in, as well as configuring their jigs for welding the tubes together. I am going to do a video inside Mosaic soon showing the process.
