Thanks, for doing this honoring Matthew. It is so heart wrenching and sad what happened to him. No one should suffer as he did because, of his sexuality. Before this tragic situation happened what I've heard he went through another abusive situation in the area where he was originally from.

R.I.P. Matthew. He definitely did not deserve to die such a horrific, horrible death! At least he is in the Lord,s care now. Thanks again Steve for taking us on this trip with you. Thanks for the video of this beautiful cathedral!❤

Most straight men could care less if a man wants sex with another man. Those who do care I always believe feel threatened by gay men because they have gay feelings themselves.

I remember when the 2 suspects got handed their sentence in court and I was appalled by their disgusting girlfriends breaking down in tears in court. How could anyone still be supportive over a couple soulless monsters who beat an innocent kid to death because of his sexual orientation?!! Such a tragedy

Heartbreaking. I hope the beauty and peacefulness of his final resting place gives his family and friends a little comfort, at least. Nobody deserves what he went through. I know how hearing it made me feel, I can’t imagine how devastating it would have been for those who knew and loved him. Amazing that Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan Macy are also interred there. I've been to the National Cathedral and it's a beautiful place I think they have tours that include going up to the top of the central tower. I didn't know the ashes of Mathew Shepard were laid to rest there. That is very appropriate. I went to a memorial service for him where I lived. Leonard Matlovich, who challenged the prohibition of gays in the military, was laid to rest in the Congressional Cemetery near the Capitol. His gravestone has a pink trangle on it and is near where J.Edgar Hoover was buried. I thought you'd like to know.

Just a suggestion Steve, if you haven't already done it, would love to see a little something on Harvey Milk. I know he doesn't have a traditional resting place but I believe some of his ashes are buried under the sidewalk in front of his old camera store on Castro Street, where he also lived upstairs, and which I visited 3 years ago. The rest of his ashes were buried off in the waters near the Golden Gate bridge in the adopted city he loved so much. I also did the tour of City Hall where his and Mayor Moscone's offices were and where the tragedies happened and it was very moving to me. Also Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio and Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera were married there. So lots of history. Being inside the mayor's office was rather eerie and sad.

I remember the Matthew Shepard case very well. From where I live in Colorado, Laramie, WY, is about an hour’s drive away. The bar that Matthew went to that night was the Fireside Lounge, I lived in Laramie in the 1970’s and back then it was a nice establishment. When the original owners sold it and it changed hands it attracted a little rougher crowd, but you could still have a quiet drink there. Unfortunately, Matthew met up with Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson. This young man was beaten so severely that he was airlifted from the hospital in Laramie to Poudre Valley Hospital in my hometown of Fort Collins, Colorado. The outcry was such, that there were banners that read “Justice for Matthew” on Hwy 287 from Laramie to Fort Collins. Candlelight Vigils were held by PVH (hospital) and in most of the churches in the area until the night after He died. Neither State had ever had this kind of crime with such brutality. Both men were found guilty and were sent to Wyoming State Penitentiary, but were later transferred to other facilities. It broke my heart to think that such horrible brutality and disregard for life could have happened. I was in our church choir at the time and we sang hymns during our Mass for his healing on the night before Matthew passed. There was sadness for a long time in our town. Matthew Shepard is not forgotten in our town. I’m sorry that this post is so long. Thank You Steve for sharing this video. Blessings to You and Jim.

Many of the funerals for former Presidents have been held at the National Cathedral In the basement gift shop you can see a tribute plaque to a military aide and advisor to Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Howard Taft: Major Archibald (“Archie”) Butt. Major Butt was loyal to both Presidents and took a vacation in Europe in order to deal with anxiety and depression because of the feud between Roosevelt and Taft. He traveled to Europe and died in the sinking of the RMS Titanic

The police's handling of this case was itself, homophobic and botched. Many facts remained undiscovered or undisclosed, because they just wanted to put the case to bed and be done with it. The hate crime angle worked... ta-da! case solved! The authorities wanted to be done with it to quiet the public outcry as well, so accepted what they thought they saw, "a hate crime," as the truth and their investigation stopped there. However certain truths, as truth is wont to do, have come to light over the years and decades since this horrific event occurred. They were not strangers. Aaron McKinney, one of the killers, and Matthew Shepard had had multiple sexual encounters over their acquaintance, and both were known meth dealers and users. Several witnesses came forward who had seen them together "being friendly," on multiple occasions. At the time of the murder however, word on the street had been, Matthew was holding and moving around $10,000 in Meth, and McKinney, and Russell Henderson, the other killer, wanted and conspired to steal it from him. And so, they went looking for Matthew. Sadly, they found him at a bar. A short truck ride at gunpoint later, they were on a remote stretch of country road. Matthew's death was as heartless as it was brutal and motivated exclusively by greed. He was restrained and extensively pistol whipped about the head. Then tied to a fence and lit on fire. Left for dead, he suffered for 15 hours, in the freezing cold, until he was found the next day barely clinging to life. All this said, and even more so now that I know the truth, I am all for Matthew's continuing martyr status in the LGBT community, because this is still a hate crime, in that it is a crime against all humanity. It keeps Matthew alive... a young man who died far too soon. It never ceases to amaze me how disgusting we can be!

The word you're looking for to describe the killers is Anthropoid, which means normal on the outside, empty on the inside, without soul. Beautiful cathedral much in the style of cathedrals in Europe, first built by the Normans in and around the 11 th century. Beautiful young fellow, may he know all the beauty and wonders of Heaven throughout eternity, thanks my friend!

I had my own suspicion about this crime. It wasn't directly motivated by hatred, but was more like fear. Matthew likely knew these guys experimented sexually. We'll never know the whole truth, other than murdered motivated by hate. His assailants are in prison, where, you know what happens to some. I have no issues with others' choices, concerning such privacies. It's another bullying label but we should be respectful & kind to others! I dont choose my friends based on personal preferences.

Humans are capable of so much good and creating such beauty, as the planning and building of this gorgeous cathedral, but can also be horribly brutal, ignorant and cruel. I choose to believe though, that there are still far more of the former than the latter but these sub-humans have to be removed from civilized society (and am glad they were). RIP, Matthew.
