@@Sweetdification she's not telling the truth the middle east plundered the Indian subcontinent because that's what it was before the British turned India was a nation for 800 years. Why don't they ask Afghanistan, Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, North Africa etc to return artifacts. The Mughal empire which ruled most of India before the British declared independence from the rest of the Muslim world so they could keep what they were taking from the Hindus instead of paying tribute with it to the Muslim world. An example is the two diamonds held by the Iran central bank which were taken in an invasion of northern India in 1739 by an Iranian ruler. By the way the British were in India at the same time. These two diamonds form part of the Iranian crown jewels and are among the largest in the world. I would like to know why Indians don't demand these jewels to be returned but demand the jewel in the British crown which was ceded to queen Victoria after the Anglo/Sikh war in 1849 after which the Sikhs became allies of the British.

@Yogi It's not as simple as that. Some artifacts have been claimed by multiple countries, such as the Koh-i-Noor stone, which is claimed by India, Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan. And why the fines and who is going to enforce them? And why would you pay a fine determined by the amount of seconds or something? You have some weird ideas...

Yes they should return the artifacts but most people in Europe and North America probably doesn't even know about these artifacts and would support the return. It can also mean that is difficult to decide which country an artifact belongs to. For example, the Koh-i-Noor stone is claimed by four different nations. These nation-states weren't around 200-300 years ago... makes it a lot harder!

@@vigfhfc This is a point often raised with some artifacts. However, in the Koohinoors case, the diamond's origin is indisputably traced to the Kollur mines which belong in India (now and then). Its original owners were the Kakatiya kings, the last owner prior to its removal from the subcontinent was Ranjit Singh who willed it to the Jagannath temple, in present day Orissa. Ultimately it is a shiny rock so I don't really care for it that much and I think the Koohinoor is overrated and given outsized attention. Jobs, Shelter, food and friendship are more important to me as a human being as human life and dignity are worth far more than a shiny rock. The question continues to arise however for Hindu and Buddhist sculptures as these were objects of veneration that belong to a still continuing and thriving culture/civilization. Home affordability is an issue in modern times and doing away with museums and unused commercial properties (affected by lockdown measures) to make space for residential spaces would be a good thing.

It destroyed the Muslim rulers & was later acquired by maharaja Ranjit Singh who wished to donate it to the Jagganath temple in puri on his death bead but British took it away. Most European empires left on good terms and are still allies with their former colonies. The British people voted not to have an empire. Oh Stop this nonsense, then return Capitalism and English also back to Britain. Andhra's riches are looted by Tamil Nadu and Telangana because Andhra never had its own modern capital. But some of Andhras Amaravati relics are better maintained in British Museum than they are in Madras and Hyd which claim them as theirs or concoct the history. At least British has a sense to not to claim them as theirs. Stop stop stop. Even Kohinoor belongs to Andhra, first in the hands of Eastern Chalukyas, then came under Kakateeyas and then the Moghuls. My country The Philippines also has a lot of important pre colonial cultural loot in those museums. Items that not everyone in the country was aware of even exists. The worst part is that its mostly pre colonial, an important time mostly forgotten and not taught in schools. How can they say that people will learn from there when not even half of the population of my country can afford to go to Europe. You hear about the Potato Famine in Ireland and there was Bengal Famine due to PM Churchill in 1940 onwards. Ireland got divided into Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in 1922 and India was divided in 1947 into India and Pakistan. We use the excuse that we are merely preserving them too often while the countries they come from are now stable and posses the facility’s to properly preserve these artworks them self. I dont know if anyone else can remember when the british gave back the nigerian war monuments a few years ago, literally 1 month later the museum it was located in was robbed and the artifact magically sold for 30 million dollars. Africa lost one of its most pristine pieces of history to some thief who probably sold it to a european millionaire.This is probably why the brits are nervous about giving any loot back, it is also politically incorrect to say : "well we dont trust that you wont just end up selling it for profit".

"The British warehouse of loot". Ouch! Although I do believe it is beneficial for some pieces to circulate, full ownership needs to be returned to the country where they originated. It does not matter how badly the UK, or the US for that matter, desires the items or if they believe they would be better at keeping them "safe", taking them out of their country of origin is just plain theft.

British museum. Should I say British warehouse of loot. 😅 Imagine giving back buddha statues to taliban or Pakistan. They will destroy it. Last year itself Pakistanis destroyed 2000 year old buddha statue as its mandate of their religion. Let the west crumble in next 50 years, and then we can shift them.
