I’ve always been fascinated by space since I was a kid. I saw this in 3D in the theater. First time I realized how terrifying space can be.

So the Kessler Syndrome is a real issue. There’s been at least three missile strikes by various militaries on defunct satellites that have made debris clouds. The US test was done on a satellite in very low orbit so it’s debris fell to Earth in weeks/ months. The Russian and Chinese tests were at much higher orbits so the debris from this tests will linger for years or decades causing a hazard to other satellites and manned spaceflight. That being said the real Kessler syndrome is something that takes years and decades not 90 minutes as depicted in the movie. To keep the ISS safe from debris larger pieces are monitored by ground based radar and the ISS is maneuvered away from potential collisions. For smaller debris that can’t be tracked the modules of the ISS have what’s called Whipple Shielding. The debris impacts the outer shell which then spreads the impact over the inner hull hopefully attenuating the impact so it doesn’t penetrate the inner hull. The main issue is there is potential debris that is to small to see but big enough or fast enough to penetrate the inner and outer hulls. If that happens they crew can come home in one of the attached capsules. Gravity was a beautiful movie and they got the look of being in 0G right. The shuttle, ISS, Hubble and Soyuz all look exactly right. What isn’t right is the speed at which the Kessler syndrome happens, the fact she could never have made it from Hubble to, the ISS, to the Chinese station since they are all in different orbital planes and how cavalier they were during their EVA at Hubble.

I honestly think this is one of the best movies ever made. It's kind of underrated in the sense that not a lot of people talk about it. But its such a good movie with a good message and even more amazing visuals. Top notch

This was my favorite movie of 2013. I read somewhere that Buzz Aldrin said this was the most realistic depiction of movement in zero gravity he had seen in a movie. If you ever get the chance, watch it in 3D. I have the 3D Bluray and it's one of my reference discs for that format.

Yes, a brilliant film I saw it a few times on a massive IMAX screen in 3D, which added so much to the experience. The disaster played out in the film is a real possibility if we don't take very serious steps to reduce the amount of uncontrolled "space junk" currently in orbit.

it is important to know that in all of our space experimentation and exploration, all of our deadly accidents have happened within our atmosphere. Americans have NEVER lost an astronaut in outer space. we have lost the crew of two shuttles - one during take off and one during reentry - and we lost a three man crew in the Apollo program on the pad. but we have NEVER left a man or woman drifting out there somewhere.

I enjoyed your reaction to Gravity. Also, I do have a request that's hopefully taken as constructive criticism. Is there any way to adjust your camera settings so the image isn't quite so soft? Part of the enjoyment of reactions is seeing the reactor's emotional response to movies, but as it is, things are so smooth-looking that it sort of interferes with that.

@@ScenecrlyK.S.O. - Thanks for the response. It might not be necessary to buy a whole separate camera. If your phone has built-in filters set to on, maybe it would help to fiddle with those a little. Maybe turn off some settings.

Water makes her buoyant/weightless as if she was in space. Astronauts train under water to simulate microgravity. Had she landed on land and the craft caught fire; she'd be too weak. Landing in the water saved her life. She literally had to unburden herself from the suit that was dragging her down(gravity). A metaphor for her life. Her past was dragging her down. Her future is unknown; she had to fight in the present to find out what the future holds for her.

I'm one of the few people who disliked this movie. Its depiction of Bullock's character as flailing, panicky, and incompetent set female astronauts back a generation. And it isn't as "realistic" as people think. That debris would have been travelling too fast to see. You'd just suddenly get sliced to chunks by something going 5 miles per second. The visuals were impressive, but too many liberties were taken to make a more "engaging" story.
@phaedrus1267
@phaedrus1267 2 года назад
It is going around 5 miles a second relative to the surface but you are not stationary. You are also going around 5 miles a second. The debris is probably not in exactly the same orbit so is going a different speed than you at the point where it's orbit intersects yours.
@roddo1955
@roddo1955 2 года назад
Failing and panicky? She is the only one who survived Did something no astronaut has ever done before or trained for. She left earth on a space shuttle. An accident forced her to travel to the ISS. Then the ISS was destroyed and she had to evacuate and pilot the Soyuz, using a trainingmanual. Incapable? If this was a true story; it would only prove that women can do EVERYTHING. I normally don't fly in the face of someone's perspective but in this case; I have to stick up for the fictional Ryan😄 if I were in her position, I would've given up right after the debris hit the shuttle. I would cut off the tether and tell George Clooney to safe his fine looking self and go on without me🤣
@roddo1955
@roddo1955 2 года назад
@Lion Hunter I don't think that's the case here. The OP pointed out what they thought were scientific inaccuracies and they also gave their opinion on Sandra's performance and the writing and is therefore aware that it is a movie. I prefer not to pigeonhole someone for seeing things differently; it kills the exchange and can come across as dismissive. I just disagree and give my reasons why. The OP might be a film maker for all I know😃
