Academy Award® winners Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side) and George Clooney (Up in the Air, Syriana) star in this heart-pounding thriller written, directed and produced by Oscar® nominee Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men) and set in the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space. Bullock plays a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with Clooney as a veteran astronaut in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving the two completely alone -- tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth...and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

For anyone who thinks that she's "moving too slowly" like her life depends on it, you gotta keep in mind her emotional state of being. This movie is a metaphor for grief and moving on. Except that for much of the movie, space (and all of its dangers in the plot) reflects how she feels. I think in some moments she rather wishes she were dead, hence her sometimes slow movements; I think she's literally fighting with herself trying to decide if she actually wants to live or die.

Stone is a mission specialist not a "real" astronaut. She was never military or combat pressure trained. She is an intellectual with a specific purpose and discipline. Unlike other astronauts who were test pilots or military and/or specifically trained to operate a spacecraft. She simply needed to be trained to endure the mission itself. I'd be just as discombobulated as well!
@The_Catnip
@The_Catnip Год назад
This makes her even more annoying at the scene when she didn't listen to mission control... to the very people who know more about space missions than her. But she was lucky so whatever. This movie is such a bummer for me, sorry about the rambling.

@@The_Catnip she apologized for that, and Kowalski acknowledged that they were going to get hit no matter what. For all we know, they would've gotten inside and died. I think her "mistake" ultimately saved her life.

This movie constantly has you in panic mode and on the edge of your seat. Saw this when it opened on IMAX 3D and the whole theatre was constantly gasping for air and yelling instructions to Sandra and Clooney as if they actually hear you. At times we felt like we were lost in space because of the massive screen and head jarring sound and sound effects. I have never experienced watching a movie like this because it’s as if the director wanted you to feel like your in space with them

I see many RU-vidrs share one pair of headphones. It's always struck me as odd because you could even just buy some cheap headphones for and just do the splitter so you both could hear the movie equally. Though to be fair they may purposely leave one of your open because they have children so they need to hear what's going on out of the other ear.

@parkergast8563
@parkergast8563 Год назад
So the part where Matt was dragging her away from the space station; the reason she couldn't pull him was because of his inertia. Like when you slam on your brakes while driving and your seatbelt is the only thing keeping you in place. Matt was hurtling off into space with quite a bit of speed, and in space, he had nothing to counteract that inertia. Once Ryan caught him, she as a human is physically unable to produce enough force to stop him. Imagine you were pushing a very heavy shopping cart in front of you on a downwards slope. If the cart is too heavy for you, it will drag you down that hill no matter how hard you try and pull back. That's what happened in that scene. Matt had too much speed/inerta for Ryan to be able to pull him back, especially with nothing to ground herself on and get a good footing.
@lance7135
@lance7135 14 дней назад
In addition, he had the added mass of the EVA pack. They are weightless, but the mass is still a factor. He would have quite a bit more than she does, so overcoming that inertia without losing the lines was pretty much impossible.

Hubble is still operational as far as I know, just repurposed. The EVA with the jetpack is simultaneously for testiing as well as giving him an opportunity to break the record and see how well it functions over time.

That George Clooney scene still bugs me. He should never had continued his momentum. I wish they would have just had her miss her catch. It would have been more realistic and the following moments would have still worked out the same.
@Ur_Quan
@Ur_Quan Год назад
> He should never had continued his momentum They were not static (in which case you were right), they were spinning around the ISS, the centrifugal force is what was pulling him away. The thing about the space which is against our experiences is that even the smallest force in weightlessness is still significant. On Earth we can ignore small forces because the friction, the air resistance, etc slow everything down, but not so in space. And yet another thing, even though they are weightless, they still have mass - and the regular spacesuite used for spacewalks weighs about 140 kg on its own, without the austronaut. Meaning Kowalski didn't weigh like 90 kg, but rather 230 kg plus the unknown additional mass of his jetpack. So his inertia was *much* higher than it might appear.

19:51 The reason she couldn't pull him in was because the ropes were REALLY loose. Given ol' newton's third law of motion, if she pulled him *in* she would be pulled *out* which was something the ropes can't handle. Also, he was constantly being pulled away because they were being swung around the station by the parachute ropes, which created a bit of centrifugal "force" (which, in effect, is the same as the "force" of gravity since you accelerate onto a surface, or away from what's above you) and chewed away at the grip of the ropes. You can see that they're spinning around the station at 19:15, as they're drifting upwards. So, your comment about them moving fast around (the station) was correct!

@49:09 "Leave the helmet on!" She can't :) the reason is that this beige spacesuit lacks the autonomous life-supporting equipment - that's why it's much less bulky compared to the white spacesuit she wore in the first half of the movie. This beige suit is instead attached to the external source of the breathable air etc. Because of that, she only has as much breathing air as fits inside it, and also the carbon dyoxide she breathes out is not getting removed. So she only has a very limited time to wear the suit and then she *has* to remove the helmet no matter what or otherwise she would suffocate.

During my own frustrated moments while watching this movie, something else I reminded myself about was that aside from "Ryan" not being an astronaut, she was alone. The systems and tasks on these shuttles are not all built to be handled and completed by one person with no control contact or assistance so with so many emergencies happening at once, of course she struggled. When she gets connected with the person who can't understand her must be how a baby feels inside the womb and then him singing a lullaby. Even when she enters earth and lands in the water and pulls herself out is child birth. I haven't seen this in awhile, and I feel like there's more. At the altitude the Shuttle generally operated there is still a very tenuous whisp of atmosphere. The satellite debris (and the remains of her shuttle and crew including George Clooney) would eventually slow down enough to reenter. It might take a few years. Some of the movies that show people freeze instantly from exposure to space is inaccurate. There’s two forms of heat transfer, convection and radiation. Surrounded by air, or any gas of sufficient pressure, convection is how we transfer body heat to surrounding air. It’s more efficient than the other, radiation. Without air, heat radiates from a source as infrared radiation. When a human is exposed to space, skin on the extremities suffers frost bite, but the body retains heat for some time as it takes a while to radiate away, and until death, the body’s metabolism continues to produce heat. The problem is decompression causing the lungs to burst if the victim doesn’t exhale all the air out of their lungs. They would also suffer air bubbles in the blood, similar to a diver with decompression sickness, but suffocation and decompression injuries are what kills. Also, the Soyuz doesn’t land in water, though it could. They land near the Russian space launch facility Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The soft landing rockets, that she used for propulsion, fire at 3 meters above ground to soften the touchdown, and the seats collapse downwards to absorb impact as well. Yea, this is a good thriller/adventure movie if you just overlook science for the fun of watching it. Truth is, Hubble ST is on an equatorial orbit at an altitude of 326 miles, the ISS is on a 51.6 degree east to west orbit at an altitude of 269 miles, and when the Chinese had Tiangong 1 it had a 42.8 degree inclination, at around 250 miles, so the idea of simply going from one orbit to a completely different one, like this, is impossible. Also, spy, communication, and GPS satellites are at way higher altitudes than Hubble, ISS, or Tiangong. Space stations are in low Earth orbit, and spy and communication sats are usually in high geostationary orbits. And astronauts are constantly at risk of being hit with any of the millions of pieces of space debris that’s up there circling the Earth waiting for gravity to eventually pull them down. Anything from chips of paint to whole rocket stages. That’s why they try to track as much of the junk as they can.

Not all thrillers are like this. Just as not all horror films are the same level of scary. And *Arrival* certainly isn't like *Gravity.* That show *Jane* reacted to for her B-Day, was it an obscure show? The decision to watch a reaction has _A LOT_ to do whether or not we've seen the film or show. _"Love is Blind"_ is one that I had to look up. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Just came from your *Interstellar* reaction, it was one of the only movies that’s brought me close to tears. 😂 And yes, I’m newly Subscribed ! Let’s GO ! 🔥

Ad astra 2019 with brad Pitt is the most similar movie to interstellar besides Gravity. It’s really cool and the science is more accurate than most space movies. Its a hidden gem. I felt like I was the only one who heard about it cause when I went to theaters to watch it opening night there were like 5 people 😂

Since Jane has issues with underwater stuff, I guess I won't recommend that you react to The Abyss, even though it's probably my favorite James Cameron movie.

According to NASA personnel everything was pretty much feasible. Now the issue would be if astronauts could keep their cool and pull these things off. But the debris speed and everything associated with that were all possible. I thing in the movie was something that under perfect execution by an astronaut could be done

Awhile back the US actually did shoot down one of our own decommissioned satellites using a specially designed missile fired from an F-15 Eagle.

Fun reaction, great movie, however, physics fails in multiple spots, also about "how fast could spaceX launch a rescue?" it would take a significant amount of time.

This one was wild 3D on the big screen. I know there are lots of incorrect scientific info in this, but it is still a lot of fun.
