Gray hair transition: what I'd do differently

In this video, I get into the things I would do differently if I had to start my gray hair journey all over again.
Did you miss the gray hair trend?
Is gray hair out of style?
Maybe now isn't the time to go gray.
✍️ The first thing I'd do is I'd have a more solid idea of WHY I want to go gray. Because this would have been very helpful when things got tough. Knowing WHY you want to do a hard thing just makes it so much easier to stick to your goals. I had an IDEA of why , but not a firm foundation.
💇🏻‍♀️ The second thing I personally would do is I would have had it color blended it sooner
Gray hair color blending is really having its moment, further evidence that gray hair is NOT a trend. The most notable gray blending stylist being Jack Martin, but so many other stylists are developing the skills needed to blend grays and ease the transition from dyed hair to gray hair.
I did not like the two toned look, and I did not like the brassy ends of my hair. So I did have it color blended. And I am glad I did. I just wish I had done it sooner.
📸 I would have taken more pictures In the beginning. I started taking frequent pictures several weeks into my journey and wish i would have taken more. Take pictures in similar lighting and make side by side comparisons. It can help keep you going to see your progress when you feel like it isn't growing.
And set small achievable goals! See them as little milestones. Once you get to the first milestone, you might be surprised at how easy it is to keep going!
If you want to learn more about what to do BEFORE you start your gray hair journey, check out this video next:

I agree with everything you’re saying! I started in July 2022 with a short undercut bob (from slightly longer than shoulder length layers) with a two clipper around the bottom so I could see what color my natural hair might be. My stylist started a blending plan at that time assuring me I would have natural “highlights” in my salt of my salt and pepper. I get pretty crazy and rash in the salon with saying just cut it off! My why was that I was having to get it multi-process colored so frequently and it never stays looking as healthy as when you walk out of the salon. In fact I started looking at a lot of people who frequently color their hair and the condition of their hair seemed to be more aging than gray. This included my own hair. So now I have a jaw length bob that still won’t go into a clip or ponytail and that is driving me crazy after a year and almost a half. So, I think I would go with more color blending and a less dramatic cut. The “ugly” feeling you mentioned is real. Having a new color and foreign cut at the same time is a lot. The other hard thing is when you finally have to say I’m totally done, no more dye period, not even color blending with toner. I did that around last March. Also no more cutting dramatically. I would see those old ends and just say cut all you can, get that out but leave the front below my earlobes. But, now, it’s finally getting below my ears all the way around. The best part is, it’s looking like yours, very healthy! My husband loves it and says it looks thicker than it ever has, he even likes the color! I haven’t had this hair this shiny other than right out of the salon for years! I think shiny, healthy hair is more youthful than dye damaged hair of any color. Plus all of the other intrinsic benefits of doing it for your own reasons and deciding to be happy with being your authentic self. I also feel like I can wear more youthful clothes because I’m obviously not pretending to be 30 when I’m 56 with gray hair. But, it is a very personal journey so good luck and enjoy if you’re contemplating this option. Thank you for your channel, it’s super motivational.

Your hair is beautiful. Thank you for the video. I am in 4 month into growing grey hair. I chopped my hair into a bob, because of the damage from bleach, and hairdye. But on this stage, the grey looks akward to the brassy old color. And i feel old. I have dye my hair 30 years. And have no clue what my original haircolor is. So exited to see the end result. My age is 46, and everyone i know is dying their hair.

I am 46 too! This is the second time I’ve been growing out my gray. The first time I made it two years and cut my hair into a bob. But then I needed to find a new job and was so worried I would be passed over for jobs because I looked old. I made the mistake of dying it. Horrible decision. Now I’m doing it all over again.

Thanks so much! Glad I found you. I have an appointment on Friday for blending. I’m only 4 months in so it’s great to hear you say you wish you had done it sooner.
