Andy tackles his local river Dove hoping to catch grayling on the fly, but his session is just after a flood and there's coloured river water coming through the system. Using euro nymphing techniques and indicator fishing styles Andy is hoping to showcase fly fishing for grayling, these modern methods a step above the fly fishing basics.
In muddy water though things are always more tough, and when the conditions make thing difficult with the euro nymphing setup, indicator nymphing can be one of the best ways of winter fly fishing - but it doesn't always go to plan!

Great to see u back fella! Know how u felt this summer. I live in mid Wales and water levels have been incredibly low for a long long. Even the reservoirs here abouts have had very little water in them. I was hoping the lower levels would concentrate the fish more and finding the pods of wild brownies would be easier... Oh how wrong I was!!! Been the hardest fishing I've had for a long time. Even paid for some rainbow stocky bashing days to get some fish on the bank but I really don't enjoy it as much. Keep up the good work guys! Thanks for your time and efforts!

Good video, but the river is low even though it's coloured (you can see by the amount of bank still showing). One of the problems with the Dove in winter is that it speeds up rapidly as all the weeds die back and nothing stems the flow anymore. This means even a slight lift becomes a torrent. Then the trick is to find some easy flow and especially eddy slacks close in. But find the fish and you often find a lot together.

HI Andy. A great video as usual. I don't think you should beat yourself up because you didn't find as many grayling as you hoped. (a) the conditions weren't great - strong wind, lots of leaves on the surface making it hard to see takes. (b) water temperatures have been very high for a long time and this was the first time there has been a flush through the system for weeks if not months. The fish would probably have been uncomfortable to say the least and most unlikely to have been shoaling. On my "home" water (the Itchen) the fish have been picky and well spread out all over the river; I have been able to catch individuals, but with no consistency as to tactics or fly choice. I have had to work really hard for my fish. I reckon you did a good job!

Hi Andy, good to see you back. At 8 mins in with the indicator are you fishing with the fly line on the water or keeping it off so in contact with the nymphs…or a bit of both? Cheers john

So much to take from this, amazing stuff! Question: Do you think a 10ft 4wt is better for indicator than a 3wt? I currently use a 10ft 3wt for both indicator and euro but want another rod so can switch quickly (currently use same rod for both).

Good insight into fishing when you may have thought that the river was too coloured to catch fish. I have to question your sanity though over taking the phone out - why when you have IB filing and the chest mount Go Pro? My phone goes into a waterproof cover and does not come out until I'm on the bank.
@IBandAndyFishing
@IBandAndyFishing Год назад
Hi John, there's no IB here, I'm on my own! The second camera is on a bankstick. The footage of a fish from a mobile is so much nicer than from the gopro, pretty much every fish you've seen in a net onthe channel has been filmed with my mobile. It caught up with me eventually but it took four years!

In Scotland we had drought all summer like England.But it's never stopped raining for the last few months.When euronymphing in wind.I often add a say a no4 split shot just below my sighter.It adds a certain amount of stability for take detection in poor conditions..I watched a video a few years back where the younger Jardine adds a heavy nymph to the top dropper for the same effect.Sometimes i add a heavy nymph but often a split shot instead. Nice to see the videos back.

Hi Andy, love the videos. I'm a river angler that spends a lot of time trotting. I know very little about fly fishing but it's something I'm looking to getting into. I notice in the first part of this video you have decided to fish the inside line with the flow coming towards you. Why did you do this instead of fishing above the swim and letting the bait trot away from you down stream? By the way love the IB vrs Andy challenges! 👍
@simongumn3154
@simongumn3154 Год назад
Hey Paris. I maybe jumping in here but in my experience there are a couple of reasons. 1stly it's tradition. On some rivers it is considered bad practice and unsporting. Also when trotting u have split shot and floats to aid the "trot" in the flow also helping to cover much longer distances which u don't get with flyfishing as the weight used to help cast is the main line itself and not really on the terminal tackle. That's also why a fly cast is multiple action to get load on the rod rather than using one twang of a weight loaded course rod. Hope that helps. There maybe other reasons that I haven't mentioned. Be interested to hear IB and Andy's thoughts tho
@saturn16
@saturn16 Год назад
@@simongumn3154 Cheers for that mate. I guess you have to keep pulling your line in so there's no slack when you get a bite and need to strike
@simongumn3154
@simongumn3154 Год назад
Yeah you do need too keep "in touch" with your fly tho a little slack is ok. Some people use strike indicators on their tippets (colored foam balls which act like a float) to help with this, tho I have never used them, I understand why a lot of people do!
@IBandAndyFishing
@IBandAndyFishing Год назад
Great question Paris, thanks for asking! It's very hard with fly kit to trot something downstream any distance and make it look natural, so in most situations a fly angler would be aiming upstream or across the river, getting a quality drag free drift as the rig comes back towards them
