A new series focused on model railroad operations, while highlighting different layouts across America along the way. We will be following a Utah Belt Export Loaded Coal Train across america. In part 1, we look at John Parker's BNSF Fall River Division and many of it's unique operations.
A big thank you to Matt Gidley and Bradley Meers for contributing photos and videos of the Utah Belt!
Merry Christmas!
Josh

The UB has been an inspiration since I was a kid reading about it in model railroader. I've always loved how the railroad is "current day" and has a story. Fantastic!

Same, I still have an issue of Mr from October of 2000 or so I think? (I wasn't alive when it came out, but I picked it up for free at a train show) but it actually includes a layout that is in conjunction with brooman's ub

I read about it in Railroad Model Craftsman, back in the 80s, when I was a boy, and the UB was running SD40-2s with F7 helpers. What a remarkable legacy this model railroad has become!

This is a fascinating video series! I have always been impressed by the Utah Belt and continue to be inspired by the Fall River Sub. Looking forward to Per Larsen's layout. Your camera work is good and your sound dubbing/mixing is very effective. I live near a BNSF mainline in Nebraska, so I know what the coal trains sound like.

That layout is a work of art! The attention to detail from the flashing light on the road warning sign to the cracks and tar on the roadway. Just an exquisite piece of model railroad architecture. I hope to one day to have a layout that emulates that level of detail.

What a beautiful and highly detailed layout. Josh you did a great job with the Utah Belt power. The chipping of the lettering was a very cool detail that I had not seen on a Utah unit before. I am assuming at some point you will be in St Louis at Eric's home? I look forward to his comments. It would be cool if you could include something in this series for Allen McClelland of V&O fame, as he just passed away a few weeks ago.

I’m probably the only person who wishes these videos didn’t have sound overlays. The editing is great, but the sound of the models would be much more satisfying for me. And then you have the wonderful sounds these nice models can generate from their speakers… I understand why you do this but it breaks my “immersion” into the layout and if I wanted to hear real trains I would just go watch real trains. Had to say it

Layouts of this high standard and magnitude go far beyond being about trains and scenery..........this my fellow railroaders is pure art in every aspect. There are but a few modelers blessed with the talent and patience to be able to present to us mere mortals a miniature world in which to escape the toil we face every day. Many thanks and kind regards. tones1957 (New Zealand)

Young fella, ( by that I mean no disrespect - I have underware older than you ), you and your Dad are predicious team of modellers. If you tell me that such and such railroad is the best or most desirable, most watched or requested then I follow on because of your recommendation. Merry Christmas to you and your family andd loved ones, I pray for their safety and good health. Whatever you have been told, don't stop the content, sparing as it is, (we know you have work commitments), it inspires those of us who dream. Best wishes for the future, Paul.

The Utah Belt has been one of my Favorite Layouts to see in MRR. Now seeing this Fantastic Video is the Icing on the Cake. Thanks for capturing the almost Realistic Action. The Scene with Smokey Bear, or is it Smokey The Bear? That looked particularly interesting that I told the wife to keep her eye on the Picnic Basket. Yogi and Boo Boo will try to steal it. Funny anecdote, my wife’s nickname was Boo Bear when she was young.

What an incredible video! I had to keep reminding myself that this was a MODEL and not actual live prototype action. The attention to detail was fantastic. I fully expected the crew trucks to drive off after the crossing signals stopped flashing. And even the telephone poles looked so real that the wiring they held was busy transmitting phone messages. And the flashing red light atop the switcher waiting in the service yard was genius. Great job all the way around! Pentrex couldn't have done it better!

Howzit : This is a GREAT presentation of JP's large; highly-detailed and overwhelmingly impressive Layout ! Thanks to longtime Canadian mate Keith Stamper's ( On3 ) altruistic selection during the course of two NARROW GAUGE Conventions [ Denver + St. Louis ]; as an HO Standard-Gauge modeller; I was privileged to have been able to view both the BNSF Fall River Division and the unreal Utah Belt ( Eric Brooman ); both headlining in this Part 1 video .... These Layouts will forever be remembered ! Needless to say; with appreciation; we look forward to the continuation of your New Series ! Much Thanks + Cheers For Now / Johnny Everitt [ Cape St. Francis : South Africa ] PS : I have to admit that as a first-time; I literally got LOST whilst viewing the * Mushroom-Designed * BNSF FR-Div given the distraction of being drawn into the absolute attention to detail of the Layout !

Young man, you have done a very fine job, not only honoring those who came before you, but your own layout is quite the fine achievement. Two things: first, as a real railroad engineer, I don't understand why some people cut off the simulated air hoses on their Kadee couplers? If they are not going to add those little rubber hoses with the magnetic gladhands, it would make more sense to simply leave the originals as they are because it looks more realistic than having nothing but knuckles between the cars. Secondly, this hobby - sadly - has turned into the polo of hobbies (rich mans game). Most parents, and young people, simply cannot afford to purchase all the materials needed to have even a small switching layout, unless they surf the pages of eBay and start off as I did in the analog world. Manufactures could change this, by simply offering kits where the consumer must install everything but the running gear. Again, you've reached another level, and we look forward to your next presentation...
