For the ipod, you hold in the middle button to turn it on. It takes the old ipod/iphone chargers, the long rectangle like chargers.

The iPod is not the first one but it is still a older model compared to the new ones. The charging cables are cheap from eBay or you will probably see one when doing another dumpster diving. The cable you will need is called 30 Pin. To power it on, slide the hold switch to where the orange isn’t visible, plug it in, and it should hopefully work.

If the hardware on the iPod doesn't work, you can purchase replacement logic boards and SSD conversion kits, in addition to the charger cable, online. The Power switch is at the top. When you slide it over to Hold, it locks the keypad so that when it's in your pocket, you don't kill the battery by the buttons being pushed. Switch it the opposite direction to unlock the Hold and get access to the keys (when you get it powered up, I mean).
