I'm thinking about this shifter to put on my custom console. But what I don't like is the long bracket underneath it.

Other option is hurst dual gate aftermarket 70s and 80s. Like a 70s Cutlass. Take a look at my dual gate videos.

What was the shifter you mentioned about having to go to P before being able to downshift? Was it a B&M?

Sounds right. Also from reviews I read, BM shifters are poor quality now.

This shifter is similar to my 1964 hurst dual gate and its built tough. I figured for the price of used older shifters, I would just buy this instead and have something new.
