RADesigns AW4 Shifter demo

Quick drive around the block to demonstrate shifting my AW4 manually using the RADesigns Winters shifter kit. I swapped the AW4 into my Jeep YJ based buggy behind a 4.2. The only wiring used was the 2 solenoid wires and a power wire into the shifter. The trans will not shift automatically. I may wire the converter lockup in the future, but have not yet. The shifter is mounted to a Goatbuilt Winters shifter mount, which is a great piece.
I used this setup offroad for the first time at Dixie Run 2017 and it worked great. I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to swap an AW4 that doesn't want to deal with splicing into the motor harness or, if you are like me and your motor does not have most of the sensors needed to wire the transmission computer.
This is not a street driven rig, though it is still tagged and insured.

How does this shifter work? Does it turn your transmission into a manual almost? Also, does it still have a Drive option.

It can be set up either way. For auto operation you have to retain the factory tcu. I believe they have you wire up a switch to select between manual and automatic shifting. In my case, I don't have a tcu at all so my trans is only set up for manual shifting.

bgredjeep oh ok cool so basically it’s a manual without a clutch? Also does it mess up the transmission at all in manual shifting?

@@moriofficial1660 it's doing the same thing the original shifter and computer would be doing (switching solenoids and moving the shift lever). Shouldn't cause any issue.

i have an 87 yj i daily with a 4.2 and ba10/5. My main concern for the aw4 swap is what is involved. i know it basically bolts up to the engine and transfercase, but how hard was it to hook up the shift kit? does the aw4 have a kickdown id have to rig into the throttle linkage?

I connected 2 wires on the trans. Nothing else was used for my install. It does have an electronic torque converter lockup that I didn't use but you might want to figure out a way to work that in if you are daily driving, or for the highway. There is a tv cable for line pressure that needs to connect to the throttle linkage.

How would you slow down without messing up the transmission if its in 2nd or 3rd?

Hey Cam, I don't really understand your question. It's still an automatic transmission with a torque converter. I can start or stop in any gear. Offroad in low range I often start in 2nd or even 3rd gear when just cruising between obstacles. Lmk if that doesn't cover what you are asking.

Is that a 3 gear shifter? Isnt the aw4 a 4 gear transmission? Im trying to do this swamp soon to my yj ,trying to get all the info

Yes. The 3-4 shift is done side to side. The 3 position on the left is 3rd, then push the stick to the right side in that same gate to get 4th. It uses switches in the shifter to trigger the change.

No. I wasn't going fast enough that you could tell, but shifting between 3rd and 4th is done by pushing the shifter to the right when it's in the 3 position (seen at 1:32 in the video). It's electronic so the switches in the shifter make that change.

It's a video from several years ago when he sold kits to install switches into the winters shifter. He no longer offers that option. Having put my hands on both I feel this version is a superior product. Much more robust and solid feeling than the current shifter he makes. I'm still using it, and it's still excellent.

Are you using a winters shifter from wod and the control kit from radesign?

I bought the shifter and control kit all from radesign, but I don't think he sells the Winters shifter any more. The shifter is the same as you would get from any other vendor until you install the radesign into it.

@@bgredjeep it’s getting clearer now. What does the control kit do? Can i just buy it from Radesign and buy the shifter from WOD since I don’t like how the vx shifter from Radesign looks like?

@@HAYTHEM543 the control kit uses micro switches to trigger the shift solenoids in the trans.

@@HAYTHEM543 I'm pretty sure if you don't have the tcu to control the trans, you will not get all 4 gears using the winters shifter and no additional controls for the trans electronics. If you have the tcu still wired in, I believe it would act the same as the standard shifter without the control kit.

Does the rad design shifter allow torque converter to lock up? I just put aw4 in my 95 YJ not knowing I would need tcm so I’ll be running rad design set up also how do you start off in drive gear or 1st? Thanks!

The shifter does not do anything related to the converter lockup. I have added a dual throw (momentary-off-on) switch to my shifter mount so I can manually lockup the converter for cruising. Like the shifter it's all manual so I have to switch it on and off as needed. For starting, if you don't have a tcu wired in for both manual and auto control, it goes into whatever gear you select. If you put it in 3rd at a stop it'll try to run in 3rd. Think like you are driving a manual trans, just no clutch.
