Great Central Railway 'Autumn Diesel Gala', 05/09/21

A superb day spent at what is becoming one of my favourite heritage railways in the UK. The Great Central Railway which runs a total of 8.25 miles from Leicester North to Loughborough. They currently have plans put in place to connect the Great Central Railway to the Nottingham Heritage Railway. There is already a bridge built over the Midland Mainline that will carry the line.
They were running an extensive timetable over the course of the gala weekend and had several amazing locos on offer including: 55019 'Royal Highland Fusilier', Class 45 'D123 Leicestershire and Derbyshire Yeomanry, 50017 Royal Oak, 37714 Cardfiff Canton, Class 20 D8098, Class 25 D5185, Metro Cammell Diesel Railcar and as a special for their Elizabethan dining train they had their resident 9F Leicester City running around.
This is a great line to go and I can highly recommend it.

Good video. It's good that we can still enjoy the heritage diesels and there are few finer sounds than a 37 opening up.

As far as I'm aware the "hoover" sound of the Class 50 was said to have been largely lost after the renovation of the fleet that happened many years back when they were still in service, but those locos still have a very distinctive sound to me - rather like a diesel version of a Class 90 in that regard.

Glad to finally see your footage. I went on the Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed seeing their variety, especially 55019. First time I’d seen a deltic and thought they were incredible!

This a great heritage line to come to, it's right on my door step in the grand scheme of things and I can't work out why I haven't been down here before, the Deltic and the 50 were my favourites

Another excellent video again sir! I have to admit that I was expecting the Carlisle video to be released but I'll take a diesel gala video just for something different! The 20, 37, 45 and 50 I'll never say no to but the star of the show has to be the 55 Deltic! Also who says you can't have a steam train in a diesel gala? It turns out you can and you can also have a diesel train in a steam gala as well! I'd say that one steam train and everything else diesel is probably not enough to count as a mixed gala, so you are correct with the video title! Rushcliffe Halt, which was seen on the destination board of the diesel railcar, is on the Great Central Railway Nottingham (GCRN). It could have gone there if it wanted to I suppose and it would have been funny if it did! 😆

spoke to the guys at the Deltic Preservation society 2 weeks before this gala took place and their intention was to send two deltics but the second one was not ready in time so that could have been why the 9F did the steam bit on the gridle car. I think one of the Deltics should be at Ecclesbourne Valley Railway near to Matlock Bath after Christmas for 3 months.

Thanks very much, this was a superb gala to come to, plenty of great traction to be seen throughout the day. Will be coming back here for future events that's for sure. Their Elizabethan Dining train is always steam hauled to add to the atmosphere of the journey. I a few years from now you would be able to do a full journey from Leicester North to the GCRN once they complete the link

Jerred mate I recommend that you check my local heritage railway out I love to here your opinion on it it's the Wensleydale railway leeming bar station there is a pacer service that operates from bedale to scruton and leeming bar there are loco hauled and dmu services to redmire or check availability to do the polar express

Why is the City of Leicester steam train running backwards? As it came through the station.

The loco would have been facing forward from Loughborough to Leicester North then the loco un couples from the coaches reverses to the other end of the train the re couples and then goes backwards to Loughborough. there are no facilities like a turn table to turn the loco around at Leicester North
