With an extra-large body and a personality to match, Great Danes attract attention wherever they go. Though they’ve historically been hunters and protectors, these days you’re most likely to find these friendly giants as beloved family companions. Taking care of one can be rewarding, but also a handful. They require tons of training, attention… and, yes, food. We’ve put together some tips that can help you decide whether to bring one of these Brobdingnagian buddies into your abode-or, if you already have one, make sure you’re doing all you can to be the great human your Great Dane deserves.

I reckon one thing that could help the breed is getting more of them involved in working and selecting the best functioning ones for their stock. It seems to me that the majority of great danes these days are not really involved in any kind of job and are more likely to be selected for show conformation rather than work. Now, to be fair to great danes, many breeds are not really involved in any sort of work and are more likely to be seen in show rings rather than working, but it appears that folks would be hard pressed to find great danes consistently working. Show conformation to make sure dogs check certain boxes for their standards is still better than folks carelessly producing dogs for people that just want a dog of a certain breed, but nothing really beats actual work for a dog that is supposed to be of a working breed. As they say, form follows function. I heard great danes were designed to be hunting dogs. Maybe more folks could use them for hog hunting similar to how folks are still using pit bulldogs to hunt hogs.

Actual working line danes would not be ideal for anyone but the most eager enthusiast. They are far too big and require too much feed to be useful for hunting vs pit breeds and dogos/hounds/etc. Now this isn't in itself a problem except it makes it difficult to encourage further working line breeding when they aren't good with and even may present a danger to kids in families, strangers, and others with new higher levels of agresssion. There's a balance to be had - I'm glad they are around today but the breed did have to change to remain relevant sadly.

@@errhka A hunting dog don't have to be dangerous. In fact most folks that use a dog for hunting don't want it to attack people. People do need to find some kind of use/function to help with the breeding of healthy dogs.

I had my Great Dane run up steep hills as a puppy and even now that he’s a bit older he has a very athletic body and is very healthy at the joints and muscle! He became really strong consistently running up those steep hills

We need more working and sport Danes, imo. I see many that do hog hunting in the South and some do dog sports, but majority are just lazy asses and it saddens me. I’d love a Dane with the temperament from before. 😅

Great episode. This breed is in peril. Too many are breeding for crazy colors and the "euro" body type. The hyper-type or "euro" as it is called here is the most alarming trend. They are tuning these dogs into something else.

This lady is nuts. You can have a dog retrained. If it has bit some one, you don't have to automatically decide. Oh, it bit, somebody put it to sleep.

Yeah I also disagree with her. I can understand that not every animal will have a easy time being rescued but for dogs with more behavioral difficulties I would rather they be put with someone who can handle them and be able to give them the training and stability they need

If you could interview anyone breeding back towards 1800-early 1900s style Great Danes, that would've amazing. The function and look of those dogs is superior to what I see now. I've seen hunting crosses that look like the old style Danes, but that's only been in pictures without much information.

Too much food at once. Eating/drinking to fast. Eating and drinking right before or after exercise. Use slow feeder bowls to help minimise chances and also seperate 1 meal into 2 smaller meals/portions.

@@sultanmahmood7485yes, and they are also a guardian breed. So which of those three dogs did you see enough of (while they were standing in a field) to determine they would be unable to hunt or guard? The 4 month old puppy perhaps in maturity?
@sultanmahmood7485
@sultanmahmood7485 10 месяцев назад
@@bettyrocks1 Lets use your "logic". Which one of those dogs did you see enough of that would be a capable guardian or a catch dog? Great danes in modern breeding programmes can't hunt or catch wild animals. They've been heavily watered down, great danes were never known for durability and the ones that are capable are exceptions. I don't need to see dogs in action to say what everyone knows. There's a reason why they are not used for hunting or guarding. Most great danes are just pets.

It'd be incredibly difficult to maintain a actual working line Great Dane for anyone but the most eager breed enthusiast. A working line GD would be very unsafe around other dogs and strangers which combined with their large size eliminates them for most dog owners, placing an already rare breed in further danger. Sometimes for future preservation it's better that they are bred this way (with health always as the first factor).
@clearlyjenn
@clearlyjenn 10 месяцев назад
Absolutely false. You are confusing the terminology of working. Great Danes were bred to hunt and guard estates. Working doesn't mean protection dog - Great Danes do not typically do bite work or Schutzen Training. There is an entire group of 31 working dogs all bred to do different jobs. You just need to familiarize yourself with the job each breed was bred to do. working group, cane corso, rottweiler, greater swiss mountain dog, newfoundland, komondor, great dane, kuvasz, tibetan mastiff, leonberger, mastiff, bullmastiff, bernese mountain dog, standard schnauzer, black russian terrier, alaskan malamute, saint bernard, dogue de bordeaux, doberman pinscher, neapolitan mastiff, siberian husky, chinook, samoyed, german pinscher, working dogs, dogo argentino, anatolian shepherd dog, great pyrenees, giant schnauzer, akita, portuguese water dog, boxer, boerboel

The only Dun Roman Danes in that video are the three fawns - and their names are on the screen. The two adult fawn bitches (both are AKC champions) and the 4 month old puppy. Not sure which Danes you think are mine. The rest of the Danes shown in the video do not belong to me nor are they out of our line. Just to clarify. 😉
