This video is of my self-supported first bikepacking trip along the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route starting in Jasper, Canada 4th July 2018 and finishing in Antelope Wells, NM.
Total distance is around 5000km with over 55,000m to climb.
I have met so many great people and like to thank each and everyone for sharing this adventure with me.
Part 4 is from Radium CO to Antelope Wells NM
Special thanks to jeffery Sharp for the pick-up service and culinary feast at the end of the tour.
Link to ACA Website for more information on the route:

We must have been on the trail just days apart! I caught up with Ed (the one with the deer in your earlier video) and Bo just outside of Pie Town and raced with Ed for a while. We all stayed in the Toaster House and I pushed on a bit further the next day. Great videos! It was bloody hot wasn't it! We don't get weather like that in Wales too often....

ben williams thanks Ben, you must have seen my tracks😀 I left the gang and Ed in Ovando as I wanted to push on. Great guy and I really enjoyed cycling with him. It was hot alright but I really enjoyed it, I hardly had any rain the whole route, so unlike what we get on these islands 🌧🌧🌧

Great videos Paddy! I just watched them a 2nd time. I plan on doing the route this July. A few gear questions What camera did you use to film it? What gps unit did you use? How did you like the Acepac bottle bags? What tent, sleeping bag and pad did you use? I’m looking for lighter than what I already have.
@paddyrast8741
@paddyrast8741 5 лет назад
Thanks for watching Jeremy and you will have a blast this July 😃. I’m working on a gear video but in short here are some answers to your questions; Camera is a GoPro 5 and Panasonic TZ90; GPS Garmin Edge 1030; Acepac was great...its jut a bottle bag so no issues there. Sleeping Bag; Mammut 3-Seasons, Tent Big Agnes Fly Creek and the mat was a Thermarest Neo-Air. One can spend a fortune on lightweight stuff and depending on your budget you may have to make compromises.

Do you like the Ortlieb saddle bag? Does it sway?
@paddyrast8741
@paddyrast8741 4 года назад
Yes I did like it a lot but I have nothing else to compare it with as it is the one and only I ever used. It does sway a bit but not to a level that would have annoyed me. I think all these Bags sway to a certain extend unless they’re fixed to some sort of a frame.

Paddy, You shot a wonderful video for you epic trip. As a watch I was thankful you didn't have endless talking and just let the landscape speak for itself. The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route is on my list of epic rides but first have to across the country west to east. On the technology side of things, what Garmin bike computer did you use? What are you likes and dislikes about this computer? Did you have paper maps or only the GPS? Thanks again for sharing your adventure and remember to keep the rubber on the road and the other way around. Take care, Scott
@paddyrast8741
@paddyrast8741 5 лет назад
Thanks a lot Scott and yeah go and do it, its an incredible experience and by the sounds of it you’re already planning west-east something which is on my hit list too😀. I’ve used the Garmin 1030 because of its battery life which was great. It’s the first bike computer I owned so in don’t have great experience and any negative elements are on my own doing i.e. not spending enough time learning about all the possible settings. That in itself though is a positive meaning its dead easy to use and set-up! I also had paper maps which are great but you don’t really need both. During cycling I always relied on the Garmin and never got lost or had to stop to take maps out etc.. and in the camp I loved looking at the Maps planning my next day, its also easier to plan with Map than looking at a small screen.

Great vids Paddy. I'd love to try it, watched so many vids on the great divide, you seemed to get the best weather. How did you get from the Mexican border,and what's the average price for rooms. NO punctures what tyre's did you have on.

Martin Arundel hi Martin, thanks for watching and your comment😀 I was lucky indeed with the weather, 1st day was wet after that just a few afternoon showers in NM. There are people offering transport service from the border to the Airports and in regards to room prices I camped most of the time but the 4 nights I stayed in a hotel the average was 60USD. The tires I used where WTB Bridger 3.0

Hi Paddy, Thanks for posting these videos. I'm planning on riding this trail next year. When you slept out what precautions did you take to avoid a bear encounter? Cheers.
@paddyrast8741
@paddyrast8741 5 лет назад
Chris York hi Chris thanks for your comment. The only precautions I took is following the general guidelines as in always have the Bear Spray with you, hang the food and toiletries up away from the Tent and don’t eat/cook in or near the tent. Other than that...the luck of showers may have helped to deter any bear from coming near me😀🙄

@paddyrast8741 3 года назад
@Angus Cuming I can’t recall it being a problem and I remember staying at a camp site around Lake Robert’s which would have had a shop. I didn’t need it though. At the time I reached that part of the route I got used to carry sufficient food and water. I had problems at the very start in the Canada section where I just didn’t realize how many calories one burns and needs, so that was a lesson learned and from there on I made sure I had sufficient portions on me😋...wish I could do it again this year!
