I recorded Vinnie on a project I was engineer/co-producing. He’s a good guy and explained some odd timing thing he did in a certain section of the song... Cool guy. 👍🏼💥
There is genius in all of these masters. Having played over 45 years my observation is that past a level of mastery you play it the way you feel it. All these guys are having a different conversation. For me I can't ID the greatest drummer in the world, they all have something to say and I'm going to borrow anything that perks my ear. Great vocabulary with eloquence, add a cool song, great players and stir.
danny garrett Well said. I’d like to point out that Vinnies performance is the only one that is truly conversational as his solo is live and onstage, All three of these cats are top shelf and I’ve seen all live. I am very fortunate.
Without a doubt all 3 are superb solos but Coleman stands out to me. His power burst and presicion is unrivaled. Super creative too, every lick is a new corner turned in his groove.
Three of the very best players around. Chris absolutely blew my mind. Good lord, he’s explosive and flies around from a whisper to a roar. Unbelievable.
I like the fact that the cymbal brands vary in Chris's kit at this time. I play a mix of Zildjian, Sabian and Ufip. Each company shines in different timbres.
All of them are Awesome in their own Right. Each have their own style and that’s what makes them so unique! I wish I could play half as good as anyone of them!😁😁. They’ve worked hard and studied for years and put many, many hour behind the kit. It’s defiantly takes a Love and desire to do that. If your in it just for $$ I don’t think you’d last long. You’d have to really live it, Love it, breath it, eat it every day like they do!! Not to mention their Blessed with just RAW TALENT as well!! I’m just Thankful I get to hear and watch them in my life time like many used to watch some of the greats before I came along. Totally a Gift. Thanks!👍👍😁😁
When you consider their entire body of work & overall genius, Vinnie is LORD!! No question... Gotta say, though Coleman is a phenomenal beast, total terrifying.
Smith back in 81' w Journey was MAGIC! Smooth as glass, relaxed, power & energy, rock w/jazz sensitivities, knew what a large audience wanted to hear...27 years old and already killed it...was a cut above from the others
If these guys were cars - Steve is the aesthetic. You buy because it's too beautiful to pass up. Vinnie is the precision and how well the car handles all the hard to maneuver corners. Chris is the power and thrust that gets you from A to B safely and quickly. Talk about three of the greatest to ever live. Unbelievable how good these men are in their own respective styles. WoW!!!
Good Job, Vinnie....You Have Excellent Stick Control, along with a heaping's of soul.....you and Jeff Beck is like a Root Beer Float....no root beer, no ice cream, no float.....Bring back some Jeff some awesome 'Wired Tunes and Blow by Blow...I know, but, they are true Classic Music....
I knew he was awesome when I saw Journey for my first concert. I was 14. I think in 85 they came to Philly, JFK stadium with the tubes, Bryan Adams, Sammy Hagar, John cougar. I just remember the smell of pot and the drumming of Steve Smith!!! Loved it
you prolly dont care at all but does anyone know a method to get back into an Instagram account? I was dumb forgot my login password. I love any help you can offer me.
All 3 are excellent musicians with an unmistakable drum technique. However, Coleman has something of the incomparable brilliance of Lionel Messi in world soccer. Filigree technician who just knocks you off your feet. Un saludo desde España.
It’s his technique. I took his cymbal set home from Zildjian Day in New York 1984. All the cymbals used at that show (unless they were the artists personal instruments) went to the shop I was working at afterward. I played every single one at home before bringing them into work on Monday, and although all were good, only one was “wow” enough for me to buy, which was a 22” K ride, which I still own. It was nice to be able to play and compare instruments that were hand selected by Zildjian for the show.
Well its 2018 and I can tell you without a doubt its Chris Coleman all the way💪😎!!! That man has progressed so much over the last 18 yrs, it's been an incredible thing too watch! Current day that mans the total package! Who wouldn't want to have the skill of Chris Coleman in present time!?! Such an awesome and nice guy as well!
...it's the tones of the drums that are amazing to me. Vinnie's kit sounds absolutely spectacular....with Coleman's right behind it. Back when Yamaha drums were made in Japan at the Osaka factory. I will forever scratch my head as to why Yamaha thought it's customer base would spend the kind of money they're asking for a Chinese made set up drums. I don't care HOW good they may sound.....
I don’t wanna say “this guy had the best solo,” or “that guy beat the other two.” But I will say this. I let out several more “What the?”, and “Ooof,” and “No way,” during Coleman’s solo. Haha! I will say that.
Koi Noval Oh whatever. That's his STYLE. Chops don't mean shit, nor do they define who is the better drummer. Steve Smith is really the most well studied out of these three.
Great Stuff! Must give praise to Vinnie's Guitarist! Michael Landau, Socal Mid 70's He was a crosstown Child Prodigy same time as Steve Lukather, He & Vinnie formed a Band 40 yrs ago called Dog Cheese, They made some really incredible stuff back then, Great seeing them together again!
@@catalystAl Had the distinct pleasure '76 seeing George Duke Billy Cobham Band w/ John Scofield & Alfonso Johnson not for casual ears! Checkout live in Europe cover of Hipockets Billy was the guy back then,
I’ve never even heard of Chris Coleman...until now!!! Holy shit!! His chops are off the scale!! Steve Smith is a talented drummer as well but Vinnie and Chris are just in a different league.
apiece ofdirt You obviously don't know..... Steve has better technique than Vinnie and Chris. It's really true. Just because he doesn't play unnecessarily difficult chops doesn't mean he can't. He chooses musicality over technique, simplicity and space over filling every damn space with 32nd notes.
Barren Savant I totally agree. Some of those guys can place those chops in certain areas of the music and make it sound like butter. But some of Vinnie’s parts are hard to listen to because he plays so technical that it sounds overplayed with no sense of musicality but that’s just how I hear some of his music. IMO so many qualities make up a good drummer and not just the ability to play technical fills all of the time. All of those drummers mentioned are amazing in their own way and their touch on the drums and ability to know the perfect way to play for a given piece makes them in a league of their own.
All three drummers are proven super professionals. Personally, I like Steve Smith the most, he has incredible rudimentary articulation and extremely elegant movements around the set. There is a lot of Bernard Rich.
