Great family EV, one small problem: Volvo XC40 Recharge twin-motor P8 review

For £55,000 you'd hope that the Volvo XC40 can be an excellent electric family SUV. After all, it's a lot of money for a car that isn't huge - in terms of outright space or electric range. But it does have a lot going for it, not least 400hp, crazy acceleration, lots of tech and a feel-good interior. Join me for a drive and a full walkaround after living with the electric XC40 for a week.

I love this guy. Like going to a Michael McIntyre concert produced by Top Gear. I know it’s Brit humour but surely the world needs more of this. 😂

I was lucky and got one of the first to come to australia, agree with your range estimates, the issues with the climate controls, just tell google to increase the temperature etc. The voice recondition on this is excellent. Like the review :)

I own that exact car. You have to drive like miss daisy to get over 200 miles. 170 is more accurate.

Excellent review. I ordered the single engine version 6 weeks ago, its a 9 month wait!!! We weren't able to test the single engine so took the family and our dog out in the exact same dual engine as this. It was properly fast but made everyone feel sick when I floored it. Your review of the single engine polestar helped massively in the purchase decision too. So thanks

Watching this a few years later after having my 2023 xc40 for a few months. 260 is overstating it....yes, you will see that number when charged 100% but then it will adjust almost immediately based on your driving style and speed. Mine went from 260 to 240 the second I reversed out to the street, and 220 a few minutes after that. So the range isn't great. Even so the operating costs are cheaper than an ICE CUV or even the ICE variant of this same car. I also have to remind myself the XC40 recharge is a little squarish tank at 4700 lbs, and every thing from the paint to the heft of the door and panels projects weight and quality. But almost everything else about this car is great. My ICE car is a Mazda CX5, a great car by all accounts, but every time I get back into that car after driving the Volvo, it gets more and more dated and feels more unbalanced.

I've had mine for a year now- great car- fast. nice handling for a SUV. Short legs though. I've only taken it on one long trip and at 75 mph it is limited. Finding level 3 chargers can be a challenge. Awaiting Tesla allowing us to use their Superchargers.... and Apple CarPlay!! Great video!

A polite request... Im asking All car reviewers and Auto Journalists to do the same. Please show and let us know detailed information about the tyre that comes with the new vehicle (Brand, type, summer/winter/all-season, speed, size and general auto industry tyre reviews grading of the tyre - meaning, good, average, bad)) Why? 2 Reasons... 1. The tyre is the most important safety feature of any car, as it is the ONLY thing that connects the vehicle with the road, regardless of how good or poor the car is itself. 2. By Auto Journalists and car RU-vidrs doing this, it will hopefully start vehicles manufacturers taking note. It may even hopefully push them towards going with best ranked tyre manufacturer, or at least offering different tyres for a customer to have a choice that will be put on the vehicle, with the best available tyre, as well as a tyre that is suitable for the time of year that it is sold. For example, living in Northern Scotland, UK, every time i pick-up a new car, often in December, regardless of European car manufacturer, they 'only' put summer tyres on it for the UK market. Yet the safe and sensible customer focused safety thing to do, would be putting on All Season tyres as a minimum. So for last 10 years, every new car i have had (5), from picking the car up at a dealership, within 30 minutes I've had to drive straight to a tyre specialists (If road conditions allow and no snow or ice) and put on Winter Tyres and in recent years with tyre technology, All Season tyres. This is often an extra £1000+ cost on top of what I've just paid for the vehicle. It is crazy and frustrating car manufactures will not listen or change and car nothing to the safety of their customers, certainly in the UK market. Thank-you..

Problem with that is that not all manufacturers constantly ship the same tyre on their cars. For example you can order a BMW 3 series and it may come with Michelin, or Pirelli. There's no way to specify which. It just depends on what happens at the factory. You won't know until your car arrives. A test car may have Michelin, which is what you want, but then your car when it arrives, will have Pirelli.

We've had our XC40 for about a year now (albeit not electric) and we have found the boot space to be a bit of a struggle. Once you've put a pram in there, you can't fit much else. You also showed in this video that it will only fit 2 regular sized suit cases. We've also found that it isn't really wide enough for two swivelling rear facing car seats (they collide when turned towards the doors). Apart from that, it is a lovely vehicle. Great road presence, really like how tall it is, and agree the design is quite timeless. I just wish Volvo would give their SUVs larger boots!

Would Sir or Madam like to spend an extra £lots on an XC60? :D Thanks for watching!
@theta2170
@theta2170 2 года назад
@@TimRodieDrivesStuff That's just it...the XC60 boot is tiny too. You have to go all the way up to the XC90 to get a boot over 500L. Volvo prioritise cabin space it seems. They're soon to be bringing out their bespoke EV platform so that might change things.

I don't like the design. Volvos usually are slick but this one looks too much like a Suzuki Vitara.

when you lowered the auto boot, it didn't stop for the luggage strap. would it stop for, say, a 3yr old's hand?

Thanks, Tim. I switched from Polestar 2 to XC40 Recharge as the wait time for the Polestar was 6 months. The XC40 looks a bit more roomy than Polestar. It’s crucial feature for me. I am 6’2”. Will get it in 2 weeks. Can’t wait. 🫰

Why do so many EVs have such bland unimaginative grills?
@rymdhundar
@rymdhundar 2 года назад
I'd say it's because companies wants to push out EVs quickly and reuse their old cars with just a small design change. Next generations will probably look different!
@DontPanicDear
@DontPanicDear 2 года назад
@@rymdhundar I was thinking the same. The BMW EVs have even bigger grills. Also that clean sheet Mustang EV was designed with a grill, which they then just filled in and painted over 🙄 I think it’ll take some designers quite a while. Kia/Hyundia not so bad.
