Great George is housed in the tower of the University of Bristol’s Wills Memorial Building. It’s an impressive bell with a rich history. Here are some fascinating details:
Royal Charter: The University of Bristol received its Royal Charter from King Edward VII on May 24, 1909. This charter allowed the university to confer degrees and formally established it as the University of Bristol1.
Great George:
Weight: Weighing in at a whopping 9.5 tonnes, Great George is England’s seventh largest bell.
Tone: When it was cast in 1924, it was regarded as the finest E-flat bell in all of Europe. Even today, it remains one of the finest and deepest-toned bells in the world.
Ringing Tradition: Great George is rung by a team of bell ringers who swing the bell using its rope and mounted wheel. It produces a louder and richer sound than the clock hammer usually chimes. The bell is rung for significant national and local events, both sad and joyful.
Special Occasions: Great George was last rung to mark Prince Philip’s funeral in April 2021. This year, it rang out for Charter Day on May 25, 2022, celebrating the university’s anniversary1.
Legacy and Donors: The ringing of Great George coincided with a special Charter Day event in the Wills Memorial Building. This event acknowledged and thanked donors who have pledged to leave a legacy to the University of Bristol.
