In Episode #114, we travel most of the Champlain Canal amongst beautiful scenery, ending in Whitehall, NY. We stayed 2 nights while waiting out a thunderstorm, but were able to explore Whitehall and even enjoy a delicious breakfast at local eatery, Historic Grounds.
(Recorded May/2023)
Thank you for watching!😎

This is probably the most beautiful video you have produced yet. Not a lot of traffic or waves fromother boats creating a traffic jam. would you rather have confronted a couple of commercial barges along the way. Enjoy

Hi Buck, thanks so much for your lovely comment! We certainly did enjoy this trip back in May. It was just starting to warm up then, so not everyone had their boats out. And being a less travelled route along the loop, we loved the tranquility and beautiful scenery. (I'm OK to not see any barges!) We can't wait to share with you the next few episodes in Lake Champlain! Thanks so much for following along😎

What a great video. The canal reminds me of the river portions of the Trent-Severn and Rideau Canal. The scenery is amazing and the cruising is relaxing and enjoyable, with the low bridges adding some drama. Your choice of music was perfect. Can't wait for the next one. Thanks for sharing your trip.

Hey Gary, glad you enjoyed this segment. We agree, the canal is similar to the Rideau and Trent-Severn. We enjoyed seeing the hills and can’t wait to share the next episode with you! Thanks for watching!😎

Great scenery! I love New York - as they say. Pretty amazing how early this canal was built. When presumably all they had was horse power.

We agree, the Champlain Canal does have some great scenery. And can you imagine back in the day building this by hand and horse power?!? Quite a feat! Thanks for watching!😎

The spillway you passed is the feeder canal from the Hudson River in Glens Falls, N.Y.

We really enjoyed your trip up the Champlain Canal. We plan to do the loop in a few years, and this may have swayed us to go this route vs. the Erie Canal. 😊

Hi Mary Beth, glad you enjoyed this episode along the Champlain Canal! It’s very picturesque and I think less busy than the Erie route. As long as your boat fits under the fixed bridges with the lowest at 17 feet at normal pool, we recommend this route! In the next few episodes you’ll see Lake Champlain, the Chambly Canal and up to the St. Lawrence River. Thanks for watching!😎

It takes time to produce the videos, so in real-time we have already completed our loop! I’m working hard to release two episodes each week. There is still a lot more to share with you.😎 And I hope you’re having a great day too!😉

I know that area well. Whitehall is very poor these days, but was a boom town for 100 years because of the canal. And the reason that Whitehall is The Birthplace of the American Navy, despite being landlocked in Upstate New York, is that the colonists built the first ship at Whitehall to confront the British on Lake Champlain.

Thanks for sharing this information. We did notice Whitehall is suffering these days but can imagine how busy it would have been back in the day. We do remember reading about the first ship being built… so interesting! Thanks for watching @tigerphid9677 😎

You mention that you transited early....what date did you transit the Champlain canal? We will likely be coming through in mid-late June.
@staycool123
@staycool123 11 месяцев назад
Hi Al, we travelled this area in May, shortly after the Troy Federal Lock and the NY locks opened for the season. I believe the locks opened May 19 and we waited a few days starting May 22. You should be fine in mid June and it will have warmed up a bit too! Thanks for watching and safe travels!😎

You probably mentioned it, but were these locks built before or after the Panama Canal.

Hi Irvin, interesting question! The Champlain locks opened in 1823 and the Panama Canal opened in 1914. Thanks for watching!😎
