Short film explores the history - and some oddities - of the Great North Road. Carlton Reid travels from London to Newcastle in a Morgan sports car with a Brompton folding bike in the passenger seat, and along the way stays in three wonderful coaching inns.
All filming - including panning shots of the car and walk-around pieces-to-camera - shot by Carlton on an iPhone 11 Pro Max, GoPro Hero 9, Dji Mavic Mini drone, and Insta360 One X2.

Excellent video with wonderful photography! I have held an interest in the Great North Road/A1 for many years, have many books on the subject and have researched the old routes in detail. Perhaps we should compare notes!

@@cyclingnews Thanks for your reply - sorry I'm not on Twitter on any social media. Not sure whether there is another way of getting in contact? Someone should start a GNR fan club or society!

Fantastic video . I have travelled the A1 for 50 years and love to divert to old road when time allows . Would love to do a trip with someone knowledgable . I have read so many books but nothing beats tracing the road yourself . Have you any more videos in the pipeline ? I currently work in Barnet and am fascinated to follow the old road when ever possible

No more Great North Road videos in the pipeline, but that could change.

The great north road goes near me in biggleswade. Used to go across common but fen reeves would not allow a metalled road so a detour to sandy with 2 bridges. The toll house is still there just before common

Very interesing and nicely made content.. I became interested in the GNR a few, many, years ago, can't remeber exatly how. Anyway, I had a copy of "The Great North Road then and now" by Chirs "Wolfie" Cooper. While on a European tour I mentioned this to a great friend in Oostend, Belgium. Carl was very interested .. So we rode the full 400 (odd) mile old route over three days in August 2017.. A memorable event.. We stayed in the "Ye Olde Bell" as a treat...

I'm thinking about doing more roads. Dunno about the Morgan, though!

Brilliant! The anecdotes remind me of the John Timpson's excellent companion books of English curiosities. 12 mph is the best speed to extort money from people - who knew, right?

what a lovely film you are a great historian thanks for posting. I would love to research the A6 right up to Scotland and would love how to do it as I share your passion

This looks wonderful! I've been toying with the idea of giving one a try. Which size did you ride? I'm 5'4 but quite long in the leg!

Brompton's are one-size-fits-all. I'm 5ft7.
