ABOUT JORDAN REEVE
A full-time planner, Jordan Reeve specialises in creating videos about the built environment to tell its stories. The topics cover the historical development of cities alongside psychogeography-style walks, which aims to uncover the urban environment as well as pose questions about the space and place in which we live, work, and play. He lives in Newcastle Upon Tyne and attempts to showcase the modern face of a former industrial city, which is still finding its way in regeneration.

Wow! Cheers mate. I grew up in Gosforth and me dad worked at Regent Centre. The changes at Regent Centre are remarkable. I'll have to have a look back there. Our street was behind Lansdowne Terrace. The Blue House was owned by the Freemen of Newcastle, who are also entitled to graze animals on the Town Moor. A caretaker employed by them lived there til about 2018, when it was converted into a business premises. A company which renovates historic buildings now lives there, which seems quite apt. ❤

Good old Gossy will always be God's country for me but it has to be said the area's not quite how it was when I grew up there. A certain rot's set in now.😞

I'm from this area originally, and what struck me from the very beginning of the video is how incredibly clean the streets are. I've been living in a city in the German Black Forest for the last 30 years, which I've seen go from immaculate over that time, to generally having a lot of rubbish now blowing around the streets here. So it was very noticeable to me how utterly spotless the roads are in this video. Wonderful to see.

What a wonderful channel this is, I found it purely by accident and so glad I did. Well done Jordan.

Always interesting to see old facias uncovered when buildings are sold for renovation. Martins Bank at 2:37 used to be a feature of British high streets until 1969, when they became branches of Barclays Bank. There's an article online about the Gosforth branch in Martins' when it received a visit from Martins Bank Magazine in 1951.

Good work! A few words from a native of Low Fell. We don't call it the "High Street", we just call it Durham Road, or The Fell. Actually running along through Low Fell there it's a route with a lot of history - you'll have passed Carters Well about which Thomas Wilson (a resident of Low Fell) wrote a poem (and indeed Tomas Wilsons reading room), and pubs and churches there that have been there since the road was laid down (before that Old Durham Road was the main North-South route). What's hard to see, but what still defines much of the settlement there, is the impact of coal mining (you passed several pit sites just off Durham Road).

2:04 The Gosforth Hotel! I used to do gigs in there with Sting on bass- or plain old Gordon Sumner, as he was known in those days.

Thanks, that was really enjoyable. I used to live on the Great North Road just north of Doncaster in Adwick. The name resonates strongly with my childhood (the nearest shops were all "on the Great North Road"). To me, the three words belong together.

Brandling Park is where we used to go as kids when we lived in Jesmond in the 60s. My mother used to do all her weekly shopping on foot in Clayton road.

Really enjoyable video. The only part I'd disagree with is the Gateshead section. From my understanding, the Great North Road ran through Wrekenton and Sheriff Hill (aka Old Durham Road) rather than the much more recent Durham Road - via Low Fell - which only dates from the mid-19th century. Cheers.

Great video! I was born and raised in Newcastle but left when I was 24. Now living in Sydney, Australia, I watch your videos to relive the nostalgia and discover aspects of the city I once knew and could sense but never articulate. Thank you!

Just returned from a week in Newcastle. Walked a lot of miles and climbed endless stairs but lived every moment. Your video is the cream on the cake.

Ive been a regular visitor (and resident for a 10 year period) to Newcastle for 51 years. Its changed so much, but enough remains to keep memories alive. Driving in on the old great north road in the 70's i can recall seeing into the windows of the flats on the Gateshead side from the elevated section of road, and it looked so modern compared to the village i lived in. But Gateshead always got the rougher deal - most people were simply carried quickly over it by flyovers, leaving the area below somewhat neglected. I still use that route when i visit as there's nothing quite like arriving over the tyne bridge to say 'im home' (even though i no longer live there!)

I grew up in the English Midlands and the memory of the Victorian red brick buildings for what I presume were the merchant class stand out as characteristic. I live in Yorkshire now and sandstone or sandstone cladding are common here.

The Ouseburn is a burn, not a river, hence the name. Also, it's not Grange town at all, the name "Grainger town" is a moldern inception referring to Grainger himself. The monument is fo course Earl Grey, not Grainger.

It's the Pandon that flows under Barras Bridge near the Hancock Museum. The Lort Burn flows through Leazes Park, down St Thomas St then across Percy St. Great video though, keep them coming!

The gap in the street used to be the Golden Tiger (or Lion) pub owned by a Deuchars brewery, it was (possibly mistakenly) demolished in the late 60s in preparation for the planned Swan house development... My parents remember the landlord, a camp but rather large gentleman who would take to literally throwing patrons out when they caused trouble!!
