A Dump trailer is the ultimate trailer. After owning one you will wonder how you ever got along without it! Mine is made by Great Northern - a local Oregon business. My sister and her husband are part owners in Great Northern Trailers - that being said - I don't think a nicer dump trailer exists anywhere! If you are shopping for a trailer you ought to give them a look. They make trailers of all sorts, and they are top of the line. www.gntrailers.com
Many thanks to all of you - have a great weekend.

THE DIY PREPPER A very useful discussion on quality construction of an important tool. As I am a resident of northern Minnesota where prodigious amounts of salt is used for 5-6 months every year, it is worth considering buying a galvanized trailer. The tiniest nick turns to blister and 5yr’s later the paint is actually just accelerating the corrosion. It will cost about 30% more but typically is only done on higher quality trailers. The only thing that can damage a galvanized trailer is impacts.

Best advice: "always buy the best tool you can afford" ... great video Scott. Thanks!
@martinpoulsen6564

Definitely sound advice. At the very least for your go to tools, that you absolutely need in prime working condition, regardless if it is "just" a must have tool, like for instance a jack, or a daily workhorse like the circular saw to put food on the table. On other "nice to have" tools it is a balance. Also a balance of whether buying, leasing or renting would be the better deal. If you need to do a job you don't expect to be doing a lot of, but requires prime tooling, then that would be an obvious place for a rental in stead of buying.

I like to hear an experienced tool guy brag on his tools (even if it raises a little envy). But when he does it with humility & honesty, it is raised to a whole nother level. And it is rare to hear anyone nowadays state that they have been blessed with what they have. I am sure that you spent a great deal of time and sweat saving for that trailer, yet you still have the humility to praise the Almighty for it. You are an inspiration to us all.

My grandfather used to build trailers. I helped him build a dump trailer in 2001, another 14k GVWR trailer like yours, gooseneck hitch. It blew my 17-year-old mind that we spent $5k in two stops - Lubbock Trailer Supply and Great Plains Steel - and still didn't have everything we needed to build the trailer. It took us about a week to finish. We couldn't get one solid sheet of steel for the bed, but he spent a lot of time welding and grinding on the bed to make sure it was smooth. I can't remember how much the buyer paid for the trailer, but he received a fine piece of machinery and was very happy with it. You would have also enjoyed a look at his service truck. It was a '74 Chevy 1-ton, 454ci under the hood. He built the bed by himself to support his farm welding operation. He did a lot of math to figure the best placement for the gin poles, and the truck was locally acknowledged as having the most lift capacity of any other service truck around, including his cousin's deuce-and-a-half winch truck. Had it's own compartments for his oxyacetylene rig, welder, air compressor, and toolbox, all in one neat package that still left a huge flat bed. Very streamlined and compact for the amount of equipment it carried all day long. It broke my heart when he retired and sold it, but he explained that if he hadn't sold it, his customers wouldn't let him retire and he just wasn't healthy enough to keep working. The buyer put the bed on another truck, but it's still in service to this day. Miss you, Papa.

A gooseneck dump trailer will be my next trailer. People are rather proud of them around here, but then again a quality trailer will never be cheap. Northern looks like a quality manufacture. Enclosed trailers are really handy as well, doubling as a mobile shop and an easy way to secure tools provided the trailer is actually secure, and appropriate locking hardware is used. Don't overlook braking capability of the tow vehicle, and a quality brake controller.

Roll up tarp is an essential addition to a dump trailer. Huge time saver for properly securing your load.
@kevinhornbuckle

It would be interesting to see a demonstration of that. A review of the transportation regulations would be helpful too. The enforcement of covered loads is variable per county.
@janderson8401
@janderson8401 6 лет назад
I could never understand why guys would pull over a block away from the transfer station to tarp the load. If they ever got pulled over by a cop, they'd waste way more time than they saved and get to pay a fine to boot.

That is a great review of the trailer by itself and as a companion to the truck. A very capable rig. I too am blessed by having a great truck and 3 very capable and different trailers that I use in my business. My wonderful wifey bought the truck for me. It is an ultimate truck - the truck every man wants - a Ford F-350 4wd diesel crew cab short bed with options that make it really comfortable for a guy with spine damage. I can hook onto any of the trailers and load tools and equipment. The truck masterfully pulls, controls, and stops the trailer and load. I count my blessings and am thankful for miracles every day.
@michaeldougfir9807
@michaeldougfir9807 6 лет назад
Another fine, informative video. The first thing is appreciation for your credit to God for your blessings. Some folks don't know that you can pray for the truck or other equipment you need. Where I come from it is common to argue about brands of trucks and chainsaws. I quit doing that many years ago. When I dedicated my life to the Lord it eventually sunk in that my work and equipment are also from God. So I waited to see what He would bring me after I committed to Him that I needed a pickup truck, some saws, etc. Now the rest is up to me, to use well what has been given to me, to make my living, and to help others. My late wife said I charged too little and gave away too much. But it blessed others and made some word of mouth business. And I am out very little. And I have peace. So I thank you for this kind of video.

Another great Public Announcement by a great man. I recently sold my (7) year old dump trailer. It was on Craigslist along with (2) of my other trailers, and all (3) sold in the first day. Guys were actually fighting for the dumper. Two guys haggling it out right in my driveway. Man I miss it, but it was fully deprecated out, so it’s time for a new replacement.

Everywhere I look around here there are overloaded pickups. Half-tons scraping the ground with 2,500 lbs of watermelon, 1-tons pulling backhoes, and I once saw somebody pulling out of a Home Depot with a 36' LVL on a 16' flatbed. We have duallies we use for our trailers, one of which is 14,500 lbs, and I often wish I had more truck to pull it with.

I have longer chains on my trailers to accommodate the different vehicles I use to pull them. The trick I use is to take old motorcycle tubes and cut them into wide rubber bands and place one behind the ball and loop the chains through them. I have used this method for years and have never had any problems.

1:48 It's a good idea to store the ramps the opposite as pictured here. In dryer southern climates, it may not be as important; but in my area, with rain and snow and salted roads, the angle steel in the ramps will hold moisture when stored as shown in the video. Stored the other way, the moisture sheds and the finish will last longer.

Used to work at a 4x4 shop & trailer dealer (PJ trailers). I'll definitely second his statement to NEVER buy a cheap trailer, you'll do better renting, in fact I don't think he was emphatic enough. A cheap trailer will cause nothing but grief, especially a dump trailer, there's too much to go wrong. What happens when the cylinder siezes halfway up? Had it happen to a customer when they were dumping at the landfill, they had to shovel the rest out, pull a line, and winch the trailer down. That killed their day, they apparently lost a small job over the delay, and it ended up costing 1300. Any decent dump trailer should hurt a little bit when you buy it.
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 6 лет назад
The way I look at it is, you can spend a few bucks more up front, and get the right tool, or it'll bite you in the ass and cost you more for cheaping out and getting a cheaper tool down the road sometime, may not be soon, but eventually it'll catch up to you.

I have a Cam Superline dump trailer. 14 foot 14,000 lb. three way tail gate, twin cylinder lift. The trailer weighs 3,680 dry. The trailer paid for itself in literally one year. I can't imagine doing my construction work without it. Paid cash up front for it and it took a while to save almost $8,000 but I have absolutely no regrets about doing it. It has opened me up to so much more profit and more jobs. Often, it makes me money on other people's job sites while I sit home.

I need a nice truck first lol maybe after college ill get one of these bad boys, but my friend's with dump trailers all travel to Michigan (I live in Ohio) because they're 3,000$ cheaper than everywhere else but I don't believe they're great northern. And both of them have had issues with the hydraulic system and both of their trailers are no more than 2 years old and they just use them to haul mulch, AND they're manufactured in the USA, I'll recommend this one to them.

Seems to be better build quality than my Load Trail. Something worth mentioning to anyone who is considering buying a dump trailer like this is that in many states a combined GVWR (manufacturer weight rating of the truck and trailer regardless of what they actually weigh)of 18,001 pounds if you are using it commercially will earn you the honor of requiring a dot number, inspections by a DOT licensed mechanic on both vehicles annually and a DOT health card. So if you can get away with a 3/4 ton(under 8k GVWR) truck and a 10k trailer you may be better off. I believe that number drops to combined 10k if used for interstate hauling. Love the channel. P.S. This includes AZ where I live, so be careful rolling that awesome 7.3 in my neighborhood with that trailer.

I have a Midsota flat bed and my buddy owns a Midsota dump trailer. Absolutely bullet proof trailers and worth every penny. The dump trailer is by far well built and like you mentioned, too much for a 3/4ton truck. My flat bed though is also built like a tank and is pulled well by a 3/4ton with ease. I have been looking into "Smaller" dump trailer options and they are out there. Midsota will custom build them, even dump trailers that can be pulled by a 1/2 ton truck. I believe every Man or Woman should rent various trailers before actually purchasing there own, it offers great experience when it comes to ordering your own to fit exactly your needs.

Money is never a concern for a toll that you will use, but as a hobbyist welder I couldn't justify $4K to buy a similar unit and opted instead for a $215 amazon/asian model. I was blown away at how well the new tool worked. It was 15 times cheaper! I think some of our "old world" values may be changing.

What brand of suspenders do you wear? I don't think you've touched on that in your past videos.

This video reminds me of how loose the restrictions are on your standard driver's license in the USA. Take a test in a 3,500 lb car and you'll be fine from a legal standpoint in a 50-foot 22,000 lb rig. Some places on the Eastern side don't even qualify you for handling a standard if you took the test in an automatic.

I have absolutely no need for a trailer, and yet I really want one after seeing this video.

I did a google search for '"adjustable drop hitch" and didn't see one like yours. Did you make that?

Sir, without a doubt some "tv network" should give you a show. You my friend are on the same level as Norm Abram.

0:06 WHOO That made me wince. I'd never do that. I either always make sure I'm already on the driver's side, or at least step over the tongue. One slip of the clutch and adios leg.

Does your vehicle dump trailer combo require you to drive with a CDL?

I don't think I'll really ever get to become a carpenter in the capacity of needing a whole moving workshop (though I DEFINITELY want one) but if I ever do, I know who to ask for advice.

Is that an L series Kubota tractor? Good machine. Very good on fuel economy. I didn't know you could shorten a chain by twisting it thanks
