Although named “Tramway” this is actually a 3foot 6 inch gauge Funicular in 2 sections. As the lower section runs mainly on public roads, its cables run in conduits below the surface.
On both sections the cars are permanently attached to the cables, so the attendants on them are not drivers, but are able to communicate with the winchman who has control of the electric motor that provides the power. The motors and winchmen are located in a building between upper and lower sections, at what is known as the Halfway Station. This building has been enlarged since this film was made.
When the line is not running the cars are effectively ‘garaged’ in the stations at each end of each section.
In an emergency the attendants on the cars are able to apply powerful brakes using the prominent wheels visible at each end of them.

The steep road up to the summit of the Great Orme was used as a stage finish in the 1965 "Milk Race" Tour of Britain. When I visited the Hotel on the summit, I learnt of it's connection with the boxer Randolph Turpin, who owned it during his years of fame, but tragically ended his life in suicide after he went bankrupt.
