Great Paul is Britain's heaviest swinging Bell, It is located in the South West Tower of St Pauls Cathedral in London. It was cast by Taylors bell foundry and wieghs 16 ton 14 Cwt.
The bell rings at 1pm every day. It is now Electically rung but can remember it being rung manually. I believe the largest manaully rung bell is Great Peter of York Minister.
Now of course ths biggest bell in he UK is the Olympic bell, however itwill apparently never ring which is a shame.Also since taking this video in 2000 Great Paul doesn't ring either as the electric mechanism is broken.

Yes that was indeed fantastic & thank you for uploading this video footage of Great Paul ringing in St Paul's Cathedral at 1pm. That looks an impressive bell indeed at 16 3/4 tons & an interesting view of the swinging mechanism in action too. What a pity it isn't ringing now due to a defect in the mechanism when 1pm strikes every day! I do hope the mechanism is soon repaired at a cost effective price & restore dignity to St Paul's Cathedral & to the public too! We in Britain love our bells & I hope soon Great Paul will be ringing out again over the capital at 1pm each day.

Terry Robinson today sadly churches are in decline and with it goes English change ringing to some degree, although change ringing goes back to the early 1600s It is indeed English culture and I feel today the British government wants to destroy that culture to appease and please everyone else. Iwould love to see the Olympic vell hung as a swinging bourdan bell.
@ANDREWLEONARDSMITH

What caused Great paul to cease ringing was the failure of the wheel motor which simply moved the wheel in both directions & due to the weight of the bell was under great strain & over the years countless motors have burnt out & been replaced then only a year or so later they fail again simply because they are not up to the job as the whole notion of using a motor driven wheel is now outdated.Now there is a solution in sight that could see Great Paul ringing again as BellTron in the USA have invented a new revolutionary chiming motor based on magnetic levitation in the form of an arc shaped linear motor that sits adjacent to the wheel which actuates a sensor on the wheel making it move. This uses only a fraction of the power of conventional motors & should be installed to get Great Paul Ringing again.

@Steven_Rowe
@Steven_Rowe 3 года назад
It all depends on how counterbalanced the bell is. If the headstock is highly arched then some of the bells weight is on the otherwise of the bearing Centreline. You can do this with any bell. Also the clapper is counterbalanced . The clapper should not the leading edge of the bell, in other words the clapper hits the bell. With a lazy clapper the bell hits the clapper. Check out this video it shows the counterbalanced bell and clapper very well ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o8v5yYEy0UU.html

@captaincook71 That is a good question to which I do not know the answer. I can only think it is rung out of tradition more than anything else. One of the comments states that it hasn't been rung for years due to an electro mechanical problem but this I cant confirm as I live in Sydney.
@Steven_Rowe
@Steven_Rowe 14 лет назад
According to the St Pauls website the strike note is e flat. I saw it rung manully in 1963. In those dayst the bell was rung almost up to frame height. You cant ring it higher for two very good reasons. 1) It has outrigger attachements ot the headstock and also the lip of hte bell would hit the roof. It is not very loud out side and for sheer sound and tone Great Peter of York is a finer sounding and louder bell
@Steven_Rowe
@Steven_Rowe 12 лет назад
The ringing of the bell would have nil effect on the birds the bell is is not loud from street level, The bell is located in the South West Tower and is above the clock face. More significant is the North West tower with the gaping aperture, There is a peal of 12 bells with the heaviest over 3 tons, they are loud from street level Re smog, London hasn't had a smog since the early 60s, I remember them well, you could put you hand out and loose it in the smog, NO JOKE

@Steven_Rowe
@Steven_Rowe 14 лет назад
@TheAngelofNight The head stock is nothing to do with tower strength but everything to do with making the bell ring slower. also also if a bell of that mass were rung on a straight headstock it would be virtually unringable. Tha counter balanced clapper is requried otherwise the bell would hit the clapper on the low side of the bell,, the clapper should always stiike the bell on the high side of the bell. The technical name for this type of bell is a bourdon bell. Regards Steve

Great Paul´s klocka och de tre slagklockorna hänger i södra tornet, medan de övriga (klockspelet) hänger i norra tornet. Det är visst alla, eller det kanske finns fler?

The North West tower is not a Carillon as the bells are hung for change ringing and they are 12 bells

Really hope the bell can ring again

So do I , apparently it has been rung manually like it used to be rung. It does require two people to ring it and I have seen it rung manually in 1963.

How tall is the bell?
@Steven_Rowe
@Steven_Rowe 3 года назад
@@sebastiangrunewald9094 I guestimate around 2.4 metres perhaps more. On the video I did say it was roughly that. If you type in Great Paul bell on Google and go to images you will see early photos of it taken before it was installed and men are standing next to it. That will give you a good idea of its size. What I do know is the diameter of the bell at the bottom is 2.91 metres

How do you get into the tower from the entrance of the cathedral
@Steven_Rowe
@Steven_Rowe 2 месяца назад
He used to get in from the tower where the 12 are and walk over to the other tower but now you get in via a security entrance and walk along high above the nave of the Cathedral.

Yes, its called Dicke Pitter and weights 24 tons. Its the heaviest (free swinging) bell in the world. There is also Pummerin in Austria which weights 21 tons, Maria Dolens in Italy that weights 22 tons and La Savoyarde in France which weights 18 tons. In comparison to where I live, thats a HUGE difference as our heaviest bell is "only" 4300 kg.

This I think sounds very similar to Great peter of York minster, York and I believe the other similar sounding bell was mount tabor glock.
