We are fortunate that the Bell Foundry allowed a film crew into their workshop to record their work process for our education and enjoyment. The processes that they use today are a combination of old and modern practices and in years to come people will watch this video to find out how we made some things in the early 21st Century and consider all of these processes to be old school! The "full service foundry". They make everything, transport everything, install everything, and get the final "monk approval certification". And there didn't seem to be one step that was easy. WOW! I wonder how long all that took. These workers show dedication far beyond anything we see anymore. WELL DONE... and incredibly beautiful.
What I love even more, is the fact that I see Youngblood in this video working with the Uncles. That means these traditions are going to be passed down, and not lost. This, put a smile on my face throughout the whole video…
I worked as a Patternmaker for 10 years in the 70s and early 80s. It was the most satisfying work I have done in my lifetime. I sure enjoyed watching this video and the Craftsman involved. CNC machines replaced us in our country but it sure is nice to see the trade still in progress in other places and countries.
Can you imagine all of the lost skills we'd have to rediscover if the world went to hell? This is fascinating! My grandfather (b. 1898) was a pattern maker for Dunlop tire and where in this video the detail was put on sheets of plastic, he'd have to make tire moulds out of wood. Yet another (almost) lost skill.
Yes. I can imagine. I finally got my BSME very late in life, just for the knowledge. I love Engineering. AlI kinds. I've done mechanical and electrical work aIl my life.
To all the Korean gentlemen who worked on this amazing bell project ,,,, This old senior Canadian is impressed with your work and talent ,,,, Thank You for all you do for others ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Old Canadian Man ,,,, Vancouver
I used to design steel gates for a state railways enterprise on industrial attachment. It was fun seeing my drawings being fabricated in the workshop. Fabricators are the hardest working and humble beings I have ever met.
The first time this bell is like a newborn baby's first cry can not be less than the workman's attention to detail exemplifies to create a thing of beauty that will last for many lifetimes totally in awe of the workmen !!!!!!
In a world of wanting everything instantly done, it's nice to see that some things still take time and effort to craft. Bell making is a fascinating thing to watch.
Even with modern technology the work is very hard. I couldn't have imagined the hardship the ancient craftman must undergone to make this piece of art. It's just mind bogling.
Lol what modern equipment and technology do you mean 🤔 even throughout the video I didn't find any modern tools that were significantly helpful and everything as usual just used human hands power, everything is done traditionally like in ancient traditional times. The difference today is that it is only done by a few people so the process takes a very long time, unlike in the past which used hundreds of human workers so the process was faster.
Well welders for just a start. Gas fired forge and other things that I would have to rewatch to make the list , but things are still a bit easier now than then. Naturally
That was truly amazing. It's been a while since I've been absolutely captivated by a video on RU-vid like I have been here. Great craftsmanship and expertise on show. Excellence.
I spent 1 1/2 years in this beautiful country while serving in the Army 1966. This video is profoundly moving and in this day and age of 24 hours of electronics and instant gratification this is really special. Great video. Thank you.
One feature of exceptional craftsmen I have observed is that, they are never in a hurry, they maintain a steady and relaxed pace which makes it a pleasure to watch.
Despite the Piano music in this track, it seems that these gentlemen work in relative silence throughout the entire process, which is pretty incredible
Many of these temple bells and cathedral bells were made 300 or more years ago. Imagine, if you will, the extraordinary work that went into making them in the old days, without the modern tools, the bronze had to be made from its components, brought to the foundry in carts, etc.
During my apprenticeship on a shipyard I had the opportunity to also learn in the foundry, but on much more profane things. These men do a fantastic job, I remenber how difficult it was. And the video does by far not show all problems of the job .
Easy to underestimate the knowledge and craftsmanship of these workers! My hat off to all of them for such a wonderful process and product. Thank goodness somebody is still doing things the old fashioned way so that the rest of us can appreciate something like this going forward. Cheers.
I like that it send like they're just everyday guys working in some old school factory. No master craftsman or artists or anything, just random guys setting up molds and pouring stuff, and then you knock off all the dirt and it looks like some incredible hand made thing
An absolutely fascinating video, a wonderful demonstration of the incredible skills to make this wonderful bell. Also the fabulous structure that it was hung in! AMAZING!!
Wow, that was absolutely amazing! Not being knowledgeable about what was happening, I was somewhat mystified about it, until suddenly it became clear. I am blown away at the masterful work these men have done!
These are craftsmen who have mastered a process that has taken decades if not centuries to develop and master. A careless or accidental move at any stage could be disastrous and force a re-initiation of the process. Every step taken is mindful. I watched slack-jawed through the entire process. Yet it appears to the casual observer. To be so easy; that is an example of great mastery.
From Mallorca-Spain, I am really impressed by your very skilled and nice work. It is just perfect, and we love that you shared your knowledge with all of us. Very sincere congratulations to all the team.
The hardest part is taking into account that as the bronze cools, it contracts. To avoid the bell cracking as it cools, the casting sand has to move with it, while retaining enough support for the bronze not to slump. The thickness of the sand has to allow this to happen proportionately to the varying diameter. The interior support is the most critical. Originally, the bonding agent for the sand was was made by boiling fish bones for hours to form a glue, then diluting the residue correctly for the sand to move without cracking. You can see this briefly, starting at 12:30 I was wondering whether the original bonding agent is still used today, or whether modern resins are now used. The colour of the liquid looked like the old school solution to me. It has taken a full paragraph to explain one small point. A full narration would have more than doubled the length of the video and probably completely baffled most viewers.
Very nice! I noticed one gentleman who was present at every phase of this project from start to finish, including installation! He must be the owner! ☮️🖖🏽
I never tire of watching these magnificent bells made. I would love to be involved in the making of one just to have added my hands to the production of something so beautiful!
The low frequencies these giant brass bells creat sound waves that if in close proximity of the bell, giggles every wet cell in the body. It's the low frequencies, sub harmonics that is the real spice that tickles the brain.
OMG! This video is fantastic. I worked at a bronze art foundry. This process is different than where I worked, but I could understand each step and what they were doing and why. They have it down. And those guys earn their beer, that is for sure.
That moment when they first hit the bell to dislodge the inner core was like the moment that bell was born and came to life. That bell contains the spirit and endeavour of all those who worked on it. I was transfixed.
wow! magnificent indeed! I loved seeing the process...the camaraderie, the intricate yet massive construction methods, the final ringing of the finished bell...
I would say stunning craftsmanship! That was the most interesting way to see this process done. I thank the Producers & film directions on this project.
Magnificent work of the artisans. I remember that in the small town of Castilla, there are foundries. They make bells for Christian temples. But the technique is the same as for Buddhist temple bells.
So many questions! This was an amazing process. Bordering on crude but time tested. And it works! I wonder if the white sand being used and mixed up in a muller was sodium silicate (co2 cured casting). I sure seemed to hold it's shape with minimal ramming. How long did this take start to finish? What is the cost of a work of art like this? How many bells do these craftsman make a year? So many different techniques used here. Fantastic..
Surely this must have been a couple months at least start to finish, with all the polishing and clean-up detail work after casting. Without modern power tools it would have taken way longer of course (and needed more people undoubtedly.) Brilliant handcraft work to create such beautiful, massive objects. :) Lovely sound of the bell, too... Wow.
The fiberglass mold used to shape the exterior of the bell I would imagine has an interesting story on how it was made. Probably from an ancient bell, I would think.
Amazing, I've always wondered how these were made, answered many of my questions. Now I'm wondering how these were made a thousand years ago, great video!
it would be the same technique, but using wooden molds instead of steel. Lots of wood carving for little letters, etc. it probably took them an entire year to craft one of these massive bells a thousand years ago, and now it looks like a couple of weeks to do the same job. Metal casting really hasn't changed since the Roman era, and probably goes back even earlier.
A truly magnificent Bell, a work of devine Art. I'm glad that I watched the making of this masterpiece. I truly enjoyed the video and the wonderful artistry that went into its manufacture. Any Temple would be proud of such a work of such splendid complexity and beauty.😊
Really cool. Awesome actually. Would love to see how these were made 1000 years ago, before angle grinders and Dremel tools were around for the cleaning/finishing process. Can't even imagine Thanks for sharing.
